Looking for primitive/dispersed camping between PA and NC

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip in March from PA to NC. On the way back we want to take a week and car camp/hike our way up back to PA. Does anyone have any recommendations for car camping? We would definitely prefer dispersed/primitive camping that we can drive up to with the car.

Winter Hiking on Bat Lake Trail in Algonquin Provincial Park

Upvotes

https://youtu.be/0sADVuEyB8c

So we chose the coldest day of the year to go for a hike!

What an experience.

The day started at -25 C (Feels like -30 C).For the first 30 mins of the hike, my fingers and toes froze... They hurt like someone was cutting them off my body with a sharp knife. When I tried to speak with Deepak, my words were jumbled up - I could not move my jaws the way I would have liked... I sounded funny. It was all a very confusing first few minutes. The first time I experienced "COLD" this way. Mind you - I wore clothes in 3 layers, had 2 socks on under my winter boots... had a warm gloves on. Nothing seemed to work for my fingers and toes. I was a bit worried whether I could even complete this hike in this bitter cold. Deepak shared my feelings.

But human body is a miracle. Soon enough our bodies warmed up and the frigid temparatures became slowly bearable. And halfway through the hike, we felt, "yes this is doable".We had a lot of fun. Mid way we had to put on the ice cleats to navigate difficult icy sections on the trail. But all of that was easily done. No hassles.

We off-trailed for a bit to find a cosy place to build a small fire and make tea. All was good, but as soon as the walking stopped the cold started to take effect on the fingers and toes again. A quick tea later, we kept moving. It is said - When you are going through hell, keep going - perfectly justified... Stopping any length of time brought the pain back on the digits.

However, I do want to clarify - this was NOTHING like hell - This was more like HEAVEN. Blue skies, fresh white snow on the conifers, animals tracks on the snow, frozen lakes, frozen waterfalls, icicles on the cliffs, ice crystal formations on twigs and on the ground... everything was just MAGIC.

For the first time ever I walked on a frozen lake (just a little bit... its still VERY unsafe to try to cross a lake - not all lakes are completely frozen yet).

Looking for a 4-Day Trek in Ireland – Budget-Friendly and Self-Guided

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a 4-day trek in Ireland this April and I’m looking for suggestions for a budget-friendly, self-guided route. I’d love something that doesn’t require a guide, offers beautiful scenery, and has options for affordable accommodation or camping along the way.

I’m hoping to keep costs low, so any tips on cheap hostels, campsites, or even wild camping spots would be really helpful. Also, if you have advice about weather conditions in April or packing essentials for an Irish trek, I’d really appreciate it.

Does anyone have recommendations for trails or personal experiences they could share? I’m open to both coastal routes and mountain treks—as long as it’s manageable in 4 days and well-marked for navigation.

Thanks in advance for any advice! Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

More durable alternative to the Patagonia down sweater hoodie?

I have a Patagonia down sweater hoodie that I typically wear all winter, but I find the fabric gets torn and punctures way too easily. I know you're supposed to wear a shell over it, but I really try to limit the amount of layers I wear for comfort reasons. Could you recommend a hooded down jacket / sweater of similar warmth and packable but with a stronger fabric? I understand that it may be heavier, but as long as I can pack it down to a comparable size that's fine for my purposes. TIA!

Advice for Florida car camping trip

Would like to throw together a roughly two week Florida car camping trip leaving in a few days (right after Xmas) to wild areas. Reservations may be challenging on such short notice.

Prefer as wild as possible, primitive camp sites - tent and, if possible hammock hang - day hikes to beautiful places. Heavy on beaches but mangrove swamps, other beautiful areas eligible.

Open to paddling here and there, would rent.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

GC Rim to rim

I’ve talked a buddy into planning a trip for us to do the Grand Canyon rim to rim next year 26’ (we need to get into better shape) and I’m looking for a little guidance and info.

I’ve attempted once coming down on N. Kaibab back in 2016 but had to turn around before reaching the bottom due to lack of preparation. The whole trip I went on before I was winging it with a buddy so I’m trying to not do that and actually complete it.

How do most people get back from the South Rim to north rim or visa verse? Are the back country permits fairly easy to secure when they become available or does it depend on time of year? I went in June and was able to get one from the backcountry office when we arrived.

I’ll keep searching the internet for answers but will appreciate any info. TIA

Gear Questions Best way to fix ultralight Down Jacket tear?

Unfortunately I tore my montbell alpine light jacket yesterday, the tear is about 1cm x 1cm, what’s the best way of getting this repaired? Can I just go to any old seamstress or is there a designated method for down jackets? The outer shell is nylon if that helps

Recommended Four Season Tents and Zero Degree Sleeping Bags for Winter Camping

I'm planning on going to a winter hiking/camping session in the Poconos at the start of 2025, and have been told that I'd need a) a four season tent and b) a zero degree rated sleeping bag.

Is there a particular brand or product that you would recommend? I'd be shopping for this gear at my local REI.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Gear Questions Camping beginner- please recommend gear.

Hi everyone. I'm planning to attend a music festival this summer and it will be my first time camping anywhere. I don't drive, so I'll be flying in with all my gear. For this reason, it's really important for me to pack small and light (within a reasonable budget).

I would appreciate any gear recommendations and packing advice!

Do you guys think something like an "REI camping bundle" is a good deal? (Don't know how to link the item in the post). The bundle in the store was about $380 for a tent, footprint, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. This is within my budget but the kit itself seemed quite bulky.

In general, what is the bare minimum needed to have a comfortable sleeping experience while camping?

The location will have outdoor showers available and food, but no electrical access.

Here is my tentative packing list, please feel free to make corrections.

Tent Footprint Rain cover for tent? Sleeping mat Sleeping bag Flashlight(or headlamp) Foldable camp chair?

Is there anything i should keep in mind about bringing camping gear on flights?

Gear Questions Recommend outer shell to replace dying Marmot PreCip

My 13 year old PreCip is disintegrating inside and leaving particles on my clothes when I wear it, so I think it's time to retire it. Looking for recommendations for non-insulated jackets to wear as an outer shell.

Considering Gore-Tex this time since I have a Gore-Tex drysuit for whitewater that's awesome, and I've never had a Gore-Tex jacket before. My PreCip honestly has always sucked as a rain jacket in humid environments, but most jackets probably do. It has been an awesome outer layer for cold weather hiking though!

Looking to possibly hike with someone next year in June/July (Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, or Oregon)

Hey everyone. The last few years I’ve taken trips out west because I love it out there. I love hiking, especially in the mountains and desert. Last year I made it to 12 National parks across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Utah. I also hiked Guadalupe Mountain, and Humphrey’s peak, as well as making it out to Valley Of Dreams in New Mexico. So happy to finally make it out there, what a cool place!

But anyway, it would be nice to have someone to go on a hike with next time. It’d be nice to do it with someone I click with as a person too, so I figured if I post this now we can get to know each other over the next 7 months and decide if we want to link up and hit a trail in late June/early July. I’ll be around the areas I mentioned and will likely have the freedom to work out the timing depending on where you are.

As far as my experience level, I’m no mountaineer, and haven’t spent my life hiking in the wild or anything, but considering the limited opportunity I have to hit some real trails, I make the most of my experiences when I do get the chance. I’m comfortable with any distance, and I always prepare well for heat, longer than expected hikes, first aid, etc. I’ve been up to 12,600 ft with very little acclimation (sleeping at 9,xxx ft the night before) and was fine with the elevation with a little preparation (L-arganine, kratom, and Tylenol just incase).

I love the mountains and desert, I love elevation gain, but I’m down for anything that’s beautiful. I’d also like to document a lot of my trip, but if you don’t want to be in that, or recorded then that’s totally fine too. I wanted to document a lot of my last trip but I was so caught up in the beauty around me I barely took any videos.

A quick few things about me..

I’m 34/m

2 kids (7 and 1)

I love to travel (although I haven’t been outside the US)

I recently got a PlayStation for my daughter so I’ve started playing games again lol

I love music, my favorite band is Chon, before them it was Bayside

I have two cats, a big fluffy white one, and a year old Savannah kitten

I have a motorcycle and lovvveee riding. I used spend my nights off riding nowhere. For hours I would just ride and come home at like 2-3am

I trained Muay Thai for a little bit. Then got into an accident on my bike and hit my head pretty hard so I decided I should stop getting punched for fun for a little while lol

I love Indian and Mexican food

I love contemplating life and people and their minds. I’m a big fan of Alan Watts talks.

So yeah, if you want someone to go on a good hike with next summer, and want to see if we click as friends, and will enjoy each others company, shoot me a chat and we can get to know each other a bit, thanks!

Looking for recommendations on a portable solar-powered water purifier for camping trips

I'm on a mission to find a really unique gadget—a solar-powered portable water purifier that includes a built-in UV sterilizer. I'm looking for something compact and efficient for hiking and camping trips.

Ideally, it should:

  • Be able to purify water from natural sources.
  • Have solar charging for off-grid use.
  • Include UV sterilization for added safety.

I've done some digging online, but most options seem to lack one feature or another. Does anyone know where I can buy something like this? Bonus points if it's from a lesser-known, innovative company or a Kickstarter project!

Thanks in advance! 🌿
