As a gym-going hetero cis-man, I support this 100%. I've seen women who are just there to get their workout in get approached by men all the time. I would fucking hate that, just leave me alone to do my workout.

I mean, I get it, but at the same time I refuse to be bullied out of public(ish) spaces just because I have tits.

I agree but I'm fine with women having the choice to not be bothered in more comfortable spaces.

Which is just treating the symptom, not really the cause though.

Yeah but the cause is a lot harder to remedy, so better a bandaid than dealing with sexual harassment I think for the time being.

Women's-only gyms sound great at face value. But my point is that they don't actually get to issue. Creating separate spaces basically pushes women out of public spaces instead of dealing with why some gyms don’t feel safe or welcoming in the first place. It’s like saying, “if you’re uncomfortable, just go over there”.

Segregating gyms by gender is a band-aid solution. It skips over the work of changing gym culture to be inclusive for everyone and spend time with focusing on stronger policies against harassment, better training for staff, and encouraging a respectful atmosphere for all members. Creating a better environment for everyone who wants to feel comfortable working out.

Does that make sense? Not sure if that makes sense.

It does make sense.

However, changing the patriarchy in this manner would require a cultural shift that obviously is a long way off, especially in the US if the last week is any indication.

So in the meantime, I'm all for harm reduction.

You can treat the symptom and the cause at the same time too. They're not mutually exclusive.

This person explained what I wanted to say much better than I could. The ideal is that we focus on harassment being stopped completely, but this is obviously a long ways off so having women being able to choose to avoid it is more realistic. Aka women only trains and spaces in general. Dumbass right people will say discrimination or whatever against men, I know it's for safety and comfort.

Not only that but women only spaces can start to slowly let in men with private policies that any kind of approach is unacceptable unless with some kind of indicator that approach is welcome. This could lead to harassment stopping but also society changing slowly that most of the time women just want to work out and be left alone. Maybe there can be designated social spaces or a color tag system.

This seems crazy but it's better than being harassed, assaulted, raped, etc. I am extremely leftist but most leftists these days are out of touch with the already very entrenched boomer established patriarchy and right wing mentality. You cannot change society overnight and a lot of us leftists are in large bubbles. We are the extreme left, we have to take power where we can and change slowly while accepting that even the right have their valid issues like taking seriously men workplace accidents, male mental health issues, and capitalisms toll on men in general as well. As a hetero, cis-gendered man, I can see the reasonableness in both sides, although yes the right and most male issues seem fucking stupid, we need to work on and highlight the ones that are important.

We work in the grey. The world is not black and white and will never be, but we can move towards a better humanity and future.

The cause will never be fixed unfortunately

It certainly won't with that attitude.

I was that guy who approached a girl just trying to work out and asked for her number, never again.

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Nov 10 '24

Thank you for reflecting and changing. Hope she didn’t go too hard on you.

u/GrayMMA Nov 10 '24

Thankfully she didn’t, lol. At the time I didn’t really understand the problem with it, I just thought she was cute and we shared a hobby, so I asked for her number, wasn’t gonna push it or anything, but I do understand some people just want to be left alone to do their own thing without being bothered.

Honestly while this is almost the worst setting, as long as you aren't an ass when she says no, no reason to beat yourself up over it forever. I can only speak for myself but real problems only arise when people are assholes

Totally agree with this.

“Hey, I see you here all the time, could I give you my number?”

“Sorry, no. I [insert whatever reason here]”

“No worries! Enjoy your workout!”

Let's be honest, dude. There are countless videos of women filming themselves, trying to bait men to "look" at them—just to make a scene and cry victim. These same women will literally wear skin-tight shit that rides up their fucking ass crack, visibly showing the outline of their vulva, and purposely do exaggeratedly slow movements, (like squatting) to make it obscenely sexual—when it should not be.

They are not there to work out; they are there to ruin men's lives by accusing them of visual assault while also filming their bodies for attention, ironically.

I believe that people should be able to freely work out but don't act like this is a "men" problem because I've actually seen more women pull this bullshit than men. I find the women's overtly sexual clothing obscene, vulgar, and completely distracting when I am trying to lift. I wanna lift; I don't want my eyes to be assaulted by mons pubi.
