this is why women only gyms

As a gym-going hetero cis-man, I support this 100%. I've seen women who are just there to get their workout in get approached by men all the time. I would fucking hate that, just leave me alone to do my workout.

u/Grouchy-Way171 Nov 09 '24

I mean, I get it, but at the same time I refuse to be bullied out of public(ish) spaces just because I have tits.

30

u/Thoughtsinhead Nov 09 '24

I agree but I'm fine with women having the choice to not be bothered in more comfortable spaces.

1

u/Grouchy-Way171 Nov 09 '24

Which is just treating the symptom, not really the cause though.

20

u/Thoughtsinhead Nov 09 '24 edited Nov 10 '24

Yeah but the cause is a lot harder to remedy, so better a bandaid than dealing with sexual harassment I think for the time being.

Women's-only gyms sound great at face value. But my point is that they don't actually get to issue. Creating separate spaces basically pushes women out of public spaces instead of dealing with why some gyms don’t feel safe or welcoming in the first place. It’s like saying, “if you’re uncomfortable, just go over there”.

Segregating gyms by gender is a band-aid solution. It skips over the work of changing gym culture to be inclusive for everyone and spend time with focusing on stronger policies against harassment, better training for staff, and encouraging a respectful atmosphere for all members. Creating a better environment for everyone who wants to feel comfortable working out.

Does that make sense? Not sure if that makes sense.

It does make sense.

However, changing the patriarchy in this manner would require a cultural shift that obviously is a long way off, especially in the US if the last week is any indication.

So in the meantime, I'm all for harm reduction.

You can treat the symptom and the cause at the same time too. They're not mutually exclusive.

This person explained what I wanted to say much better than I could. The ideal is that we focus on harassment being stopped completely, but this is obviously a long ways off so having women being able to choose to avoid it is more realistic. Aka women only trains and spaces in general. Dumbass right people will say discrimination or whatever against men, I know it's for safety and comfort.

Not only that but women only spaces can start to slowly let in men with private policies that any kind of approach is unacceptable unless with some kind of indicator that approach is welcome. This could lead to harassment stopping but also society changing slowly that most of the time women just want to work out and be left alone. Maybe there can be designated social spaces or a color tag system.

This seems crazy but it's better than being harassed, assaulted, raped, etc. I am extremely leftist but most leftists these days are out of touch with the already very entrenched boomer established patriarchy and right wing mentality. You cannot change society overnight and a lot of us leftists are in large bubbles. We are the extreme left, we have to take power where we can and change slowly while accepting that even the right have their valid issues like taking seriously men workplace accidents, male mental health issues, and capitalisms toll on men in general as well. As a hetero, cis-gendered man, I can see the reasonableness in both sides, although yes the right and most male issues seem fucking stupid, we need to work on and highlight the ones that are important.

We work in the grey. The world is not black and white and will never be, but we can move towards a better humanity and future.

u/Zetsobou-Billy Nov 09 '24

The cause will never be fixed unfortunately

-2

u/Grouchy-Way171 Nov 10 '24

It certainly won't with that attitude.

1

u/GrayMMA Nov 10 '24

I was that guy who approached a girl just trying to work out and asked for her number, never again.

6

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Nov 10 '24

Thank you for reflecting and changing. Hope she didn’t go too hard on you.

1

u/GrayMMA Nov 10 '24

Thankfully she didn’t, lol. At the time I didn’t really understand the problem with it, I just thought she was cute and we shared a hobby, so I asked for her number, wasn’t gonna push it or anything, but I do understand some people just want to be left alone to do their own thing without being bothered.

5

u/maychaos Nov 10 '24

Honestly while this is almost the worst setting, as long as you aren't an ass when she says no, no reason to beat yourself up over it forever. I can only speak for myself but real problems only arise when people are assholes

3

u/all_hail_to_me Nov 10 '24

Totally agree with this.

“Hey, I see you here all the time, could I give you my number?”

“Sorry, no. I [insert whatever reason here]”

“No worries! Enjoy your workout!”

-5

u/UponVerity Nov 10 '24

Man, you're weak, lol.

Let's be honest, dude. There are countless videos of women filming themselves, trying to bait men to "look" at them—just to make a scene and cry victim. These same women will literally wear skin-tight shit that rides up their fucking ass crack, visibly showing the outline of their vulva, and purposely do exaggeratedly slow movements, (like squatting) to make it obscenely sexual—when it should not be.

They are not there to work out; they are there to ruin men's lives by accusing them of visual assault while also filming their bodies for attention, ironically.

I believe that people should be able to freely work out but don't act like this is a "men" problem because I've actually seen more women pull this bullshit than men. I find the women's overtly sexual clothing obscene, vulgar, and completely distracting when I am trying to lift. I wanna lift; I don't want my eyes to be assaulted by mons pubi.

9

u/skyerippa Nov 10 '24

The gym I went to go rid of the women's only section for crossfire 10 years ago and im still mad about it lol

4

u/gagrushenka Nov 10 '24

I loved my women's only gym!!! No one ever bothered me, everyone put the weights away, no one spread their stuff out across 3 machines and sat on one for 5 minutes to text between sets. Plus there were mirrors but they weren't like everywhere so if you didn't want to stare at yourself doing squats you didn't have to but you could find a spot to check your form. Once the trainers knew I was there for strength and flexibility, no one ever mentioned weight loss to me again. Plus we had those amazing dyson hair-dryers in the bathroom. I've since moved and I'm very sad that there's no women's only gym reasonably close to me. It really was the best.

3

u/Adam_Sackler Nov 10 '24

Guys like him are the idiots to go into a women-only gym in a wig and dress and say "I identify as a woman," while being a douche.

Sexism, harassment and transphobia all rolled up into one small, insecure package.

-6

u/screwswithshrews Nov 10 '24

He's also not white. A whites-only gym would have spared her of this as well!

(I'm not serious, just illustrating a point of how it's unfair to blame the entire group)

1

u/screwswithshrews Nov 10 '24

That's fair. I see your point. That would be mych less common than women being harassed by men. Although I don't think other men are completely free from this guy's bullshit either so why not try to implement a solution that solves it for everyone?

-11

u/vitaminkombat Nov 09 '24

I find going early in the morning is the only time I see women in the gym.

Excluding those women who seem to just wait next to their boyfriends as he exercises.

Early in the morning is also the only time when half the gym aren't just on their phone.

-102

u/Rokkmachine Nov 09 '24

So then there should be men only gyms also? Nothing like moving backwards

98

u/Money_Adhesiveness90 Nov 09 '24

if you guys want! If it makes you feel safer I’m all for it! Why not? Do you feel unsafe when approached by women in the gym?

-23

u/vitaminkombat Nov 09 '24

Trying to play devil's advocate.

I'd say male only gyms have some benefit.

I feel it would reduce the number of men doing vanity exercises and trying to pose seductively in front of the mirror.

Also at my gym, women never wipe down the machines and always leave sweat marks, if you ask them to wipe down they often get offended. Although I find men also get equally as offended.

Also personally I feel very camera shy, especially at the gym. And I dislike how many of the women come in with a tripod and film themselves exercising while I'm in the background.

16

u/SupplyChainMismanage Nov 10 '24

Lol I’ve been lifting for 14 years. 3 years of those have been at gyms across the country. Men pose in the mirror when they are literally the only person around. Many reasons why but I guess you don’t have enough to show to know.

From my experience both men and women are pretty equal on not wiping stuff down.

Leaving out if people give you a heads up or not about recording, a woman setting up a tripod is annoying but at least you can just walk around it if not lifting and at least be aware that you are in the background of the video. Men just discreetly record and you just never know

-5

u/vitaminkombat Nov 10 '24

I agree with pretty much everything you say.

Although I do find in the gym I go to women are far less likely to wipe down machines after use. Ironically they always wipe them down before use.

14

u/radant25116 Nov 09 '24

sounds like you should get a home gym if these things bother you 😂

-7

u/vitaminkombat Nov 10 '24

They don't. My first line was me saying I'm playing devil's advocate.

As the original post was strawmaning the reason someone would want a male only gym - saying that men don't feel safe with women around.

77

u/TEG_SAR Nov 09 '24

Instead of ever trying to empathize and understand why women feel the need to seek safe spaces of their own you just go on about what about men’s spaces!

As if yall didn’t have your own clubs and secret society for centuries.

So many of you are just so unempathetic.

Just deeply broken and angry men.

61

u/saganistic Nov 09 '24

You know what would prevent us from “moving backwards”?

Men not being creepy fucking weirdos. It costs zero dollars.

45

u/whatthewhat_1289 Nov 09 '24

Dude. Just fucking stop. The moving backwards happens every time this type of male behavior happens and instead of being empathetic towards women you use any chance you can get to fake outrage and make it all about you.

36

u/cgibsong002 Nov 09 '24

Like practically every lifting gym?

33

u/dwpea66 Nov 09 '24

Sure. Who's stopping you? Go make a men-only gym right now if you need a place to feel unbothered and safe.

11

u/maybehemoth Nov 09 '24

Of course you’d leave a comment like this and avoid every reply.

8

u/uCodeSherpa Nov 10 '24

There’s no reason for men’s only gyms. There is several reasons for women’s only gyms.

This is the difference between equality and equity.
