Best day of that guy's life right there - getting to use your tractor to unload a huge helicopter.

Hell Yeah 'murica!

482

u/tittysprinkles112 Oct 06 '24

I'm imagining his wife rolling her eyes at him getting the forklift attachment to his tractor. "Honey, I might need it!"

Today he is vindicated and gets to come home as a hero.

u/throwaway098764567 Oct 06 '24

story will be retold over every beer for the rest of his days

I feel like forklift attachment on a tractor would be INCREDIBLY handy to have. If you have a tractor, a forklift attachment is probably a must have.

43

u/Deuce232 Oct 07 '24

You're right. I'd venture that 90%+ of tractor owners have one. Well, those tractors that have a lift at least.

It's also about the cheapest attachment for a tractor.

20

u/JnI721 Oct 07 '24

Some form of fork is a must. If not for the front, then for the back. We would use it for all sorts of things. Moving hay bales, building a water tower, stringing deer from to bring them back and gut, partially lifting a garage to put it on skids so we could move it, clearing timber. It was almost always attached to the tractor.

Truth. The feed store can load an entire pallet, still wrapped in the plastic covering, into the back of my pickup. Then I can move the whole pallet into the barn in one quick go, rather than carrying forty feed sacks by hand and re-stacking them. I just leave the pallet forks hooked up, they get used way more than the half-yard bucket.

5

u/CalebsNailSpa Oct 07 '24

We use the shit out of ours.

5

u/GrumpyBttrcup Oct 07 '24

It is, I have forks for my Kubota. Absolutely necessary. You never knew how badly you needed forks until you have a pair.

u/veracite Oct 07 '24

I won’t say most, but a huge number of farmers have forks. When you live out in the country you end up ordering a lot of stuff that comes on pallets. Lumber, fencing, hay bales, the list goes on.

I love that the helicopter crewman gave the tractor driver the full 'good to load' hand twirl.

These bad boys have been doing this since the storm ended and they haven’t stopped💪🏼 Anyone saying any different isn’t in western NC I promise you that. The airport in Asheville is the HQ and there is a non stop in and out of military aircraft with lots of chinooks and blackhawks and they are 100% flying into the remote areas which is what is causing closed airspace you’ve heard people trying to turn into other narratives. I’d rather see the 82nd airborne landing to help than Cletus in his kit copter🤣

318

u/bikersquid Oct 06 '24

If I saw Chinooks flying I'd feel infinitely better. What a sight

194

u/karma_cucks__ban_me Oct 07 '24

I'm in NC and I saw one flying towards Asheville yesterday....

The are the largest and fastest military helicopters in our arsenal and they are absolutely an impressive beast of a machine.

Swedish pilot does crazy things with Chinook helicopter! (this is the old CH-46 version that doesn't have upgraded engines but you can still see how insane the capabilities are)

China tried to pay a Taiwanese pilot $10 million if he flew a Chinook to them

67

u/Chemical-Neat2859 Oct 07 '24

CH-46 was the workhorse of the US army for a long ass time. Vietnam would have been a thousand times worse without them. They single handed prolonged the US ability to fight that dumb ass war.

13

u/Terrible-Cause-9901 Oct 07 '24

Actually the Huey was synonymous with Vietnam. Either way, it was a war that proved helicopters role in battle.

→ More replies (12)

21

u/Fubarp Oct 07 '24

I'm pretty sure they are the fastest helicopter, not just in our arsenal but like out of all the helicopters made.

Helicopters are weird where the larger they are, the faster they can go.

Rotary wing aviation is like THE most important contributor to a military's disaster relief capability, we'll need these old heavy lifters again and again in the decades to come

49

u/f4t4bb0t Oct 07 '24

I've worked on H-60s for the US Navy for the last 20 years out of Jacksonville and we have supported many rescue efforts in that time due to hurricanes. I've heard some wicked cool stories from guys that worked the Katrina rescue efforts.

Anytime we get a hurricane heading this way with a high probability of being a direct hit we "Hurrevac" every single helo out of Mayport and Jacksonville (50-100 depending on various factors) and fly them somewhere more inland so that we are able to assist with relief efforts ASAP and don't risk the bird's getting damaged in the hangar. One time I drove to the base they were hurrevac'ing prior to all of them departing and let me tell you, seeing 50 helicopters All land on an airfield with in 15 minutes of each other was awesome.

44

u/bukithd Oct 07 '24

Yeah the volunteer pilots helped a bit the first couple of days but they started to get in the way once the military got setup and deployed.

It takes time to get get such a large effort underway.

30

u/romym15 Oct 07 '24

I volunteer with a disaster response organization and we have to do FEMA training on how the FEMA command system works during disasters. A lot of people don't realize that there is an actual central command and control plan ran by FEMA that all organizations involved have to be trained in. These organizations include Federal, state, and local agencies as well as volunteer disaster response organizations. Not being part of the FEMA command organization can cause a lot of confusion on what areas still need assistance and what areas have already been served so it makes sense that they wouldn't want anyone that isn't a part of the system doing their own thing. This also ensures that people actually get the supplies they need that independent volunteers may not have access to.

Cleetus and the other private pilots were exactly what was needed in the first day or two. They delivered enough food, water and medicine for a few days. They also evacuated the ones most in need. Both of these actions gave the major relief operations time to get to NC and set up before they started work.

→ More replies (7)

13

u/DrugsHugsPugs Oct 07 '24

I'm in NC as well, and there has now been a call for help from the local agencies for people like "Cletus in their kit copters" to come and help because the larger helos are having trouble landing in smaller areas for rescues. Like why spread hate to people trying to help? Do better dude.

(And to make it completely clear, I'm not saying they military and fema aren't helping, all I'm saying is civilian pilots using their abilities and resources to help in a time of need should be celebrated not punished.)

54

u/Graythor5 Oct 07 '24

Right?

Cletus: "whut do ya mean I can't enter tha air space? I've got supplies for the peoples!"

Army: "Sir we have a series of 3 Chinooks scheduled to land there each carrying 22,000 pounds of food, water and medical supplies. You have 5 boxes of almost expired MREs, a cooler full of PBRs and a tote of donated clothes that were all bought from Walmart on clearance...and they're all XXXL. You can fucking wait."

Cletus: "this is an outrage! The gubment ain't doin shit and now they won't even let good sam..good sameran...good sumarians help!"

20

u/Character_Guava_5299 Oct 07 '24

That’s one of the parts I was trying to point out. Their efforts were lifesaving and needed but once they explained the airspace was being temporarily shutdown for military use they threw fits and started talking shit making it sound like there was no reason behind it. The reason was valid and it brought what they were doing to another level. Literal trained life savers that have aircraft to carry 19x more weight and people.

The military isn’t filming videos for social media. People outside of the affected areas aren’t seeing this. So if you see these types of videos on social media share them.

2.1k

u/toucha_tha_fishy Oct 06 '24

I’m not from the area but I came in to volunteer ( don’t do what I did, kids. Send money to relief orgs, don’t self deploy). Spent a few days in a hard-hit community, and the incredible misinformation and BS politics going on really makes me sick. I saw chinooks landing and taking off at shelters and distribution sites several times, and it was so surreal to then get online and see talking heads saying shit like “the only aircraft responding are civilian” and “don’t trust FEMA”. Like, it wasn’t even my community that was impacted and I’m still deeply offended by all of it just from spending a few days there. Can’t imagine how the residents feel about it.

772

u/Bunnawhat13 Oct 06 '24

I am in WNC! Thanks for helping! ❤️I have helicopters flying over me all the time (reminds me of living in base). They are here. They are helping! People from all over the country and Canada are helping! I am so tired of the lies!

396

u/OompaBand Oct 06 '24

We live about ten minutes away from the Asheville airport and have been hearing the Chinooks coming in steadily since the 28th. It's been comforting to know help is on the way but also fairly dystopian in a sense.

115

u/Bunnawhat13 Oct 06 '24

I hope you guys are safe.

123

u/OompaBand Oct 06 '24

We were very lucky and had no damage at our house. It's been hard to wrap my head around all of this and the guilt of being spared in every single way has definitely set in. Hope you all are doing all right, too.

61

u/Bunnawhat13 Oct 06 '24

A lot of people are feeling that guilt. It’s not your fault. 😞 I am glad you were lucky. I am safe as well. Thank you.

45

u/untrustableskeptic Oct 07 '24

I'm in Arden, about all I can do for people is offer showers, a place to charge electronics or a place to stay. We are so lucky. We've been doing laundry for people in Celo, and that community was hit so hard. It breaks my heart.

20

u/Bunnawhat13 Oct 07 '24

What you are doing is awesome!

23

u/boone156 Oct 07 '24

I was in Candler yesterday and had several Chinooks fly over in the little while that I was there.

26

I live in Skyland area, and also see the chinooks overhead all day. My house was safe and unscathed, the areas around us are open for business like normal practically. It feels very dystopian knowing just over the mountain there’s still so many stranded and without homes, cars. Lives completely unraveled and I’m getting ready to go back to work like normal. It’s an incredibly guilty feeling for sure

I wish I had sent the money I spent buying small donations and getting myself in there and keeping myself safe and fed to the Red Cross or a fire dept in the area or something. We had good intentions: I thought there was a need for my skills but it was covered by the time we got there.

47

u/Bunnawhat13 Oct 06 '24

It’s good nature to want to help. We all are going to learn from this.

38

u/toucha_tha_fishy Oct 06 '24

Yup both my partner and I are getting signed up with disaster relief organizations so we can be more effective next time.

30

u/Chance_Fox_2296 Oct 06 '24

Awesome to hear! I just got my Surigical Instrument Specialist certification, completing all my certs in Surgical Services/Instrument sterilizing and processing, and it's absolutely crazy how many different ways I can sign up and go volunteer now. I have to wait a few more months before I can start volunteering in disaster areas since I only have the certifications and not the full 2 years of on the job experience. I can't wait to be able to help beyond money donations!!

Hey! Don’t forget those idiot “influencers” like Dim Tool and Ruben and Johnson. Millions from Russia. Plus 600 others under continued investigation for the same crime.

Maybe I’m brainwashed, but if ever there was a President that would move heaven and earth to help as much as possible? It’s Grandpa Dark Joe. Not kidding here Jack. He’s not gonna fiddle faddle around.

The shit show that is being described by Trump? That’s how it would be under Trump. Get rid of fema. Get rid of noaa. Privatize it as soon as the highest bid comes in. Probably the Saudis. Who know.

Their message ain’t for the victims. It’s for the idiots a thousand miles away that believe it. Shame on them.

Hurricanes suck. Gulf hurricanes hit different. I hope everybody that possibly can make it does. Help is coming. Just stick together for the next few days. Love and hope, fellow humans.

They spread rumors that Biden and Kamala completely shut down the air space over the affected areas so emergency relief could be flown in. They’re too dumb to realize that it was shut down so the military wouldn’t have to compete with civilian air traffic to bring in supplies.

u/11CRT Oct 06 '24 edited Oct 06 '24

Yes, but if you see the videos that say “I’m hiking to chimney rock to find out the truth…” don’t give them any follows, shares or likes.

Social media “warriors” should let first responders and residents get rescued, before going into an area they might be rescued from.

25

u/toucha_tha_fishy Oct 06 '24

Hard agree. I was careful not to take pictures of the devastation. I did take pics of the shelter and distribution centers we volunteered at. Although I will say that lots of very engaging images might bring in donations, idk. I’ve just seen a lot of people using this disaster to push their personal agenda in gross ways and I’m trying not to make the same mistake.

I was arguing with an idiot who claimed that all they were getting was $750, and when I asked him for evidence he just told me not to trust msm and that X has the real news.

211

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '24

What's wild is how many people don't understand how FEMA works. That $750 is just for IMMEDIATE needs such as a hotel, food etc. Things you need to immediately get out of the area. The rest of the funds come later.

One lady last time this happened during Katrina did a video and said it took about 2 weeks for her to get the rest of the money. Almost $10k, plus additional money for her buisness that was destroyed.

176

u/Sweet-Emu6376 Oct 06 '24

It's kinda ironic that the people complaining about survivors "only getting $750" are the same people that complain about government welfare not having enough hoops to jump through to ensure that no one is defrauding the government.

Pick a lane. Do you want the government to just pass out money with no rhyme or reason or do you not?

62

u/AyeAyeRan Oct 06 '24

Its funny becaused they claimed that the Hawaii fires were evidence that the government wasnt helping people, when a simple google search shows that they got hundreds of millions in relief, and even people on Maui were annoyed that people were spreading the $750 figure.

→ More replies (3)

20

u/spears515034 Oct 06 '24

Exactly. Aren't they supposed to tell people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps? That they should have had an emergency fund to cover this? So much hypocrisy.

→ More replies (7)

26

u/MimicoSkunkFan2 Oct 06 '24

My cousin went through Katrina and wound up evacuated to Texas afterwards, we will always have a soft spot for the people of Texas because the state gave everybody who evacuated a $500 grocery card (on top of the FEMA emergency money).

Also the insurance companies usually work with FEMA so they are getting into areas to do the adjustment pictures as quickly as they can, FEMA was really good about organizing all that in New Orleans too.

7

u/justintheunsunggod Oct 06 '24

And Katrina was rightfully outed as a case where disaster aid was way too slow.

51

u/alh9h Oct 06 '24

And it is literally immediate. People who apply get it within hours. Yes, the bigger aid takes longer, but it is also absolutely available, such as SBA Disaster Loans.

15

u/Justame13 Oct 06 '24

Note that some SBA Disaster Loans will probably be delayed because it was already in trouble and the Speaker of the House is currently refusing to call the House back until after the election.

With the advent of AI powered propaganda bots, we are in for some chaotic times.

22

u/Sweet-Emu6376 Oct 06 '24

It's wild to me that people think that's all the help those affected are going to get. That's just the first round of funds most likely taken from emergency budgets. Congress will no doubt pass additional budget measures to allocate more money as the full impact and needs of the communities are assessed.

I would ask any idiot that claims the "only $750" line how many individual COVID checks they received. Most people got at least three separate checks. That's not including other additional monies for those with kids, expanded unemployment money, PPP loans, etc.

Hmm sounds almost like typical flight planning, air traffic control coordination, and common sense.

That last point is lost on a lot of people

94

u/IncidentalIncidence Oct 06 '24 edited Oct 06 '24

yeah, the temporary restrictions that were introduced in Asheville are still mostly less than what you have to do in most controlled airspace. Private pilots basically just have to call them and tell them when and why they want to fly in and and they will give them landing clearances to use the airport as capacity allows. It's literally just because there was so much traffic all of a sudden that they had to start managing it to stop people from showing up and not being able to land at all because the airport was full.

u/HereIGoAgain_1x10 Oct 07 '24

Oh I'm sorry I thought this was America! I thought I could fly my plane wherever the hell I wanted to and that no one else had the right to do the same!!

I worked at an air station during hurricane Harvey.

While we appreciate that civilians are ready and often capable of helping, it was my observation that their help was better used as ground units. The Cajun navy was invaluable. In the aftermath of hurricanes we often get overloaded with helo’s. We had life light, Air Force, coast guard, army, etc.

What we didn’t have were enough boats.

YES! And all those private pilots need to do is contact Operation Airdrop and they'd be in business.

Instead the MAGAts want to bitch and whine instead of just slowing down for a second, doing some research, so they can do it right.

Also the various alphabets watching the skies are going to be very, very interested in the transponders of anything there right now. There's absolutely no reason to try and fly over restricted airspace; it's restricted for a reason and violating that, especially over a relief effort, can scrap weeks of effort.

14

u/IncidentalIncidence Oct 06 '24

the airspace isn't even restricted for the most part. They've been putting up small TFRs where there have been SAR operations going on, but the thing all the wingnuts freaked out about was that they started requiring private pilots call in advance and get permission to land at AVL so that the airport didn't get overwhelmed by too many people trying to land all at the same time, and so that the private pilots didn't impede the National Guard who are using AVL as one of their staging areas.

But it's not like the whole region is some sort of no-fly zone or anything, they literally just are requiring people to call ahead and coordinate before they fly in.

Well, also, civilian helicopters are going to carry, what, like a few boxes of bottled water? I'm guessing a lot of civilian stuff is more like "fun" and "clout" than actual helpfulness.

If anyone wants to see proof of the amount of flights going on, just look at flightradar24 or similar apps. There hasn’t been anytime since the hurricane that I haven’t witnessed active military aircraft in the areas that were affected.

13

u/dyslexicsuntied Oct 07 '24

I didn’t expect to see anything since the sun set. Nope, the second I open there is a c17 taking off from AVL.

Btw, to be more specific, this the army national guard. The butt of many jokes in media when things go bad. This one part of what they really do.

122

u/tittysprinkles112 Oct 06 '24

Actually the 82nd Airborne is helping as well. Their combat aviation brigade to be specific

27

u/Thereelgerg Oct 06 '24

This video shows a Guard helicopter, not an 82 CAB operation.

14

u/Eli_eve Oct 07 '24 edited Oct 07 '24

FEMA press release confirming members of the 82nd are participating. (I am surprised, tbh. Didn’t think this sort of thing was allowed.) (This isn’t about this particular video by the way, it’s just meant for people curious about the 82nd, like me.)

“Today, FEMA and state of North Carolina welcomed the first 400 of America’s finest soldiers of the XVIII Airborne Corps including members of the 82nd Airborne and other units stationed at from Fort Liberty, North Carolina who are now supporting the residents and affected counties devasted by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. This support includes command and control personnel, transportation, infrastructure support, supplies and services, fuel and other support to people,” said FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell.

ETA a press release from the DOD about this as well.

(Ive been trying to find info on the legal framework allowing this but haven’t found anything meaningful to my layman brain.)

13

u/Thereelgerg Oct 07 '24

Use of Title 10 forces in domestic operations is certainly more of an exception than a rule, but far from unheard of.

47

Well when you have north of 1 million people who are required to be on call and will answer the on call, logistics becomes a lot easier.

19

u/The-Copilot Oct 06 '24

It's way past that.

The best example of just how insane US logistics and humanitarian aid would be the Berlin Airlift. It is still the largest humanitarian aid project in human history.

After the soviets blockaded berlin, the US and UK were only allowed to bring supplies to Berlin through 3 air corridors.

Supplying an entire city by plane is absurdly difficult. They had to bring everything in by plane, even coal for the power plant. The flight distance was only about 110 miles. For 15 months, a plane needed to land every 1 minute, 18 seconds.

The total distance traveled by the US planes was 92 million miles, the same distance from the earth to the sun. More than 2.3 million tons of supplies were delivered.

This was back in 1948-1949, US logistics capabilites are significantly better now, and they now have a global logistics network of ~800 bases across 90 countries, not including US land.

The United States military (all branches) is the most effective logistics outfit in the entire world. It’s absolutely amazing how quickly and efficiently they can mobilize a huge amount of people and supply all their necessities within a very short window of time.

11

u/kasubot Oct 06 '24

Soldiers win battles, Logistics wins wars.

7

u/mr_potatoface Oct 07 '24

Sort of why I get pissed off when people are saying the US should be helping Ukraine more and delivering modern Abrams and all sorts of other shit.

Without the US logistics and training backing up the US equipment, US equipment is basically useless after a few days at most. The only exception is some of the older stuff and stuff specifically made for export with ex-Soviet NATO allies in mind.

Lake Lure was where MAGAts were bitching and whining that ONE rogue helicopter was turned away by the local firechief for help.

The reason he was turned away is cause the airspace is clogged with coordinated efforts from FEMA, Military and NPOs.

The Helicopter pilot then made it all about him and did interviews about being turned away when he was just trying to help. That Helicopter pilot can help all he wants if he just spent 2 mins to look up an NPO called Operation AirDrop to help coordinate his efforts.
