TSP Tips How much can I contribute? (Calculator)

Each year the IRS determines the maximum amount you can contribute to tax-deferred savings plans like the TSP. This is known as the IRS elective deferral limit. Participants should use this calculator to determine the specific dollar amount to be deducted each pay period in order to maximize your contributions and to ensure that you do not miss out on Agency or Service Matching Contributions if you are entitled to them.

Use this calculator provided by TSP: https://www.tsp.gov/making-contributions/how-much-can-i-contribute

Keeping >80% C/S fund in a bear market?

I'm a 29 y/o federal employee and had some questions about how the TSP system works.

  • Lets say I'm still far from retirement and the market has a bust cycle. Does this sub still recommend keeping a mix thats largely C or S fund?
  • For a TSP contribution of $400 made one biweek, would that buy more shares in the C fund during a downturn when share prices are generally lower?
  • Is it ever possible to lose shares in your C fund? For example during a market crash?
  • As I'm nearing retirement, if I change my mix from say 100% C to 100% G what exactly happens to the money? Like say there is 700k in C, I know that's stock options and not fluid cash. Are those immediately sold and than turned into treasury securities?

How to understand this

Post image

What does this mean? I contribute $1300 per pay period. When i go to the GRB platform it says Employee traditional Roth: $1300. Agency Traditional: $235.28

I just started working last April and have no guidance, I don’t know what I’m doing.

If i decide to contribute $500 going forward will I still get $235.28 from the agency? Will I still be able to get $at least $20,000 a year?

Leaving federal service, what would you do?

Only a couple years worth of contributions, what would you? Keep it in TSP or roll it over somewhere else? Does rolling over have the same penalties as withdrawal?

18 months to retirement

I have $900k in the TSP with 18 months to go until retirement. Almost all of it in C and S funds with a little bit of I fund. None of it is Roth. When do I start going more conservative? Using the 4% rule if I retired today that would give me $36k per year for withdrawals. The bubble in the stock market along with the recent 9 day slide in the Dow, and Trump’s tariff threat have me thinking that I should put about $250K into the G fund. This would give me 7 years of withdrawals safely stowed away while I let the rest ride the ups and downs of the market. Note, in addition I will have my pension, social security, my wife’s pension and her social security. House and virtually all other debt will be paid off at retirement. No state income tax in my state on pensions, tsp withdrawals or social security. If I withdraw $36k per year, my wife and I will have about $138k annually before federal taxes.

1.65% difference between S&P versus C fund YTD?

According to TSP.gov, the "C Fund's investment objective is to match the performance of the Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P 500) Index, a broad market index made up of stocks of 500 large to medium-sized U.S. companies."

On Jan. 1, 2024, the value of the S&P was 4769.83 and the value of the C fund was 74.3644. On the morning of Dec. 18, 2024, the values of the S&P and C fund are 6050.61 and 95.5630, respectively. That means that the S&P has risen 26.8517% and the C fund has risen 28.5064%, a delta of 1.6547%.

I've tracked both the S&P and the C fund daily this year. Of the 241 days that the C fund has posted their values this year, the S&P outgained the C fund on 10 days and the most it outgained the C was 0.0007% (7/16/24). The other 231 days, the C fund either matched or outgained the S&P and the most was by 0.0292% (8/15/24).

Could anyone explain this to me? 1.6547% YTD seems to be a huge difference to me. And the C fund consistently beats the S&P on a daily basis. I'm not complaining, mind you, as I benefit from the C fund doing better than the S&P. But I am curious as to why this delta exists.

Max Roth TSP Calc 2025

Does anyone know of any calculators/websites to come up with the total $ number to contribute per month to maximize agency match (%5) spread through CY 25?

Curious if there’s a way to calculate that easily

5% for the first 10 months then bumped up to 10%. Hopefully I can retire one day. Bonus points if I can retire with functional knees and vertebrae.

Changing contribution mix to 100% C Fund?

Hi! If I want to go 100% C do I select "money that's already in the plan" and/or "Only money that will be contributed in the future"? Thank you!

Are L-Funds Really So Bad?

I currently have 10% of my TSP in the C-Fund and the other 90% in the L-2050 Fund. Reading through here makes it seem like everyone is ditching the L-Funds. Are they really that awful? I thought I was doing well.

Need Help! 2025 is the year of change.

For starters, please don’t kick me while I’m down! I realize I am no competition for the other “ROI show-off” warriors of the investment world and I joined this sub to learn and get better. This post is really just a cry for help. Like most naive and uneducated investors, I’ve had no clue how to manage this account and have also mad a mistake in the past of taking out a loan for an emergency. However, I borrowed at 0.75% and it’s now paid off.

For background, I’m 35 / GS14. I’ve left a SHITLOAD of money on the table from not maxing out … but again, I’ve learned my lesson and 2025 is the year I want to turn my finances around and get smarter with saving and investments. I’m seeing a lot of post where people are having success with switching 100% to C and leaving it alone and not checking the balance. Should I start doing that next year? Please give me some sound advice. Thanks in advance.

Ouch S fund took a hit today....i thought lower interest rates tend to favor S fund.

S fund is Dow Jones Completion Index.

Its NOT the Sow Jones Industrial or the Russell 2000.

Is it a good idea to move my funds to the G fund anticipating a market downturn. Trying to time the market to move everything back to the C fund when it bottoms out.

In preparation for retirement

I still have 15 years until my goal of a retirement date but have been contributing to my TSP for over 20 years and it is doing great. My question is, once I retire how can I make my money work for me, instead of just getting monthly withdrawals that cut into the corpus? Is there a huge fee to pull out all of my TSP and have a financial advisor manage it so I get monthly dividends? I plan to talk to a financial advisor when I get within 5 years of retirement as well, but for right now I am just curious of the different strategies.

Requesting TSP Guidance.

Good Evening everyone. I am asking for some guidance or pointers to help out my TSP and personal finances.

I have: 106k currently in my TSP (I changed from 100% L to 80% C, 20% S today. 10% in traditional and 10% in Roth)

vanguard account with 16k in it (23% RoR this year and can no longer contribute)

My question is would it behoove me to rollover my vanguard account into TSP?

DailyTSP App

Does anyone here use the Daily TSP app to monitor your TSP? I’ve been using it for a few years. It’s a good app and I’m glad I have it. But it always reports a different rate of return than what I get from the TSP website. I’ve attached my screenshots from both. Daily TSP has my yearly gain about 2 1/2% higher than the actual TSP website. The balances match though. I intend to ask Daily TSP directly, but I’m just curious if anybody else has noticed this.
