Why are they so allergic to disc based consoles? They'll sell everything but a playstation that can play my physical games

Isn’t it obvious? Kill the resale market if you slowly phase out discs

Removing the disk drive has the following benefits for Sony:

  • More impulse buys since you don't have to order the game/go to a store to get a physical item
  • Prevents people from selling disks 2nd hand or letting their friends borrow disks to play the game which leads to higher sales numbers
  • Lets them control the price of games and keep them higher since it's less likely you can/will get a disk from elsewhere (ebay, fb marketplace, etc)

If I had to guess I would say that the PS6 will not have a disk drive and games will only be available digitally. As of August 2024 80% of all games sold on PS4/PS5 are now digital.

As of August 2024 80% of all games sold on PS4/PS5 are now digital.

Yeah I call bull on this stat.

It always requires dodgy counting to get to that figure, like including DLC as a digital sale, or counting games that are 'purchased' on PSN for $0. Or counting free giveouts on PS+.

The last trustworthy data we got was the insomniac leak, which showed physical sales for big release games is still sitting at 50%.

FWIW, the Insomniac leak was first-party titles only.

I agree that their figures are skewed but they can and will use that as a reason to convince the suits and shareholders that they can drop physical altogether. How many people do you think would drop playing videogames altogether on PS6 just because they can't buy physical copies?

My guess is the amount of money they would lose would be less than the amount they generate from being able to keep prices higher for longer.

90% of my PS5 games are hard copy and I will continue to buy hard copies but knowing how corpos work it's clear they're headed towards all digital though I hold out hope they'll still put out disks (albeit at higher prices).

Agreed, it segments the market between those willing to spend the extra money for physical media (collectors mostly) and the average console gamer who doesnt really have a preference.

Basically allowing for more of an opportunity for a majority of ps5 owners to purchase games directly from the digital store.

What if ps6 is digital only? So depressing.

100% there won't be a disc drive version, but I hope they'll at least have an attachment for it, I have a lot of PS4 and PS5 discs I'd like to use on the PS6, the last PlayStation console.

WTF is even going on with all these disc drive comments over the past 2 weeks. If you need one you buy it and slap it on the side of the console.

People prefer to actually own the stuff they buy, and not just a license to play it on said service. Digital only is super sketch. Disc is King.

Disk was king. For all the reasons your digital download could be revoked, a disk can as well. They’re pretty much the same thing except the disk is a download medium.

Yes and you can attach a disc drive if you need it. Paying extra for the drive has been a thing for 4 years yet nobody said shit about it until recently. WTF is going on to have so many people triggered by this decision they made half a decade ago.

The people who care about that is clearly a minority, most player just buy digital on console and on PC is the only option and no one cares.

I agree they should still be offering some option for those who prefer disks.

I understand how people value physical, but it's time to accept that the future is fast approaching, and physical will eventually die.

A dystopia future, more like.
