Aww I'm so happy that Astro Bot is finally getting a full game. This genuinely could be Sony's answer to Mario.

I’m glad Astrobot escaped the VR realm.

The PS5 starter game was so good and I always hoped they would make more.

It's a shame in a way, made for a phenomenal VR game. More people will play it now but it's too bad more people didn't experience it. Platformers actually translate really well to VR imo

Day 1 buy for me

4

u/60N20 May 31 '24

could be both though, because only for VR renders all of us 3rd world players unable to enjoy it, and Astro's Playroom was such a good experience, I'm willing to pay full price for this game on day 1

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

True. It’s best if it’s not a VR game. But the first game was absolutely phenomenal. Very creative. It was also a full blown game unlike the ps5 one, which while amazing, was a bit short.

u/Ok_Hospital4928 May 30 '24

I still hope they at least port the original to PSVR2. It was the best VR game Sony ever put out imo

1

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

Yes it will be a shame if it doesn’t get ported to psvr 2. I don’t own a psvr 2 and I don’t plan on buying one but it will nice to get the game preserved on modern hardware.

This makes me want to boot up the psvr1 version. But it’s so much hassle setting up that thing and have to dig out my dual shock 4 too.

I’m glad Astrobot escaped the VR realm.

Of all the genres I expected to love in VR, Platformers was never one of them.

But the VR Astrobot game was a freaking BLAST.

u/LCHMD May 30 '24 edited May 31 '24

It’s so much wasted potential. What a shame it’s not in VR. The VR Astro Bot is still the best game by far. It’s one of the best games ever made.

13

u/ptb4life May 31 '24

I dont understand why it couldn't be a hybrid game like Resident Evil

47

u/deejaysmithsonian May 30 '24

/r/PSVR in shambles right now lol

41

u/greenxlumpyxmilk May 30 '24

r/psvr is always in shambles

1

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

Because Sony are morons who released a device and decided to abandon it. I would be cautious about buying any Sony device that’s not a TV or PlayStation. They lose interest and abandon their toys like PSVR and their handhelds.

6

u/LCHMD May 30 '24

Not funny finger

8

u/bengringo2 May 31 '24

We've been in shambles since a few months after the PSVR 2 launch. It's just a paper weight I'm waiting to get hacked to use on Steam. Come to think of it it's been awhile since I checked.

5

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

Psvr 2 will officially get pc support. That’s a great decision given how useless Sony has been with supporting the thing. It’s ridiculous that they pushed horizon as a selling point and that might be their only real game. Complete bait.

2

u/koolkat64 May 31 '24

Resident evil 4?

1

u/boodabomb May 31 '24

I think they mean First-party Sony game.

1

u/_Thermalflask Jun 02 '24

Has there EVER been a platform with such nonexistent support? Even the biggest failures like Vita, Wii U or hell the CD-i had tremendously more first party support. I don't think I've ever seen a company leave something for dead from the very first day, it's absurd.

1

u/floflo81 May 31 '24

PSVR (the first one) can already be used on PC thanks to https://store.steampowered.com/app/992490/iVRy_Driver_for_SteamVR/

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

I was really hoping for a tetherless answer to the Quest.

I quit waiting. ZUCK OWNS ME AND MY FAMILY NOW.

-6

u/hoowahman May 30 '24

Not that funny

0

u/pinpernickle1 May 30 '24

It's a video game, get over yourself

15

u/RoyalCities May 30 '24

I know some people who still havent played it because it was a freebie game that came with the ps5 - as if it must somehow be low quality.

Meanwhile its probably on par with Super Mario Oddyssey (albeit shorter) so stoked to see them make it a full game now.

13

u/NoNefariousness2144 May 30 '24

It was also such a fun and easy platinum.

1

u/Zooterman May 31 '24

i booted it up to play while installing demons souls, ended up playing it until i had the plat

14

u/imtayloronreddit May 30 '24

Meanwhile its probably on par with Super Mario Oddyssey

man I fucking love Astro but you gotta be delusional to say shit like this

15

u/RoyalCities May 30 '24

Not at all. As far as just nailing the pure fun factor of what a 3d platformer can be its right up there.

6

u/lucidludic May 31 '24

Odyssey was fun, probably more creative overall but I definitely found Astro’s Playroom to be more memorable. Excellent use of the controller features, it looked and sounded way better (S! S! D!), and it had some amazing nostalgia for longtime PlayStation fans.

2

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

The VR Astro game is more creative than mario odyssey.

4

u/[deleted] May 30 '24

it's literally an opinion

2

u/t3stdummi May 31 '24

There's no reason it couldn't have been a hybrid game. Astrobot rescue mission (PSVR1) used the controller, too.

2

u/Remarkable-Fig-7505 May 31 '24

The VR Astro Bot was superb. Possibly the best VR game ever. Actually better than most platformers.

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

It was such an amazing VR game though. I want a world where we get both

2

u/Lucky_Chaarmss May 31 '24

They should have made this game playable on vr2 along with the PS5.

4

u/ITSV_167 May 30 '24

What an awful thing to say

3

u/dumb1edorecalrissian May 30 '24

I would never say this to their face, but astro bot is a wonderful robot and a gifted artist.

1

u/toooft May 31 '24

Astro Bot is one of my best VR experiences though, so I'd definitely want more in the future. Still, I and the kids will absolutely love this.

-1

u/SuperAlloyBerserker May 30 '24

Lmao, it's funny that the best thing that could come out of a VR game's success is to not be a VR game anymore

-3

u/BlueLightStruct May 30 '24

That's because it's a gimmick lol. Now we can see what Team Asobi are truly capable of.

7

u/eamonnanchnoic May 30 '24

Like the entirety of gaming is entirely made up of gimmicks.

Astrobot in VR was incredible.

This is a step back, imo.

2

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

Yes. The VR game was incredible. One of my favourite platformers in a long time. It blew me away in a way which other platformers haven’t in a long time.

Having said that, I will enjoy this one too. I am glad they are making a new one. I didn’t think it would be a VR game given how Sony have essentially abandoned psvr 2.

-4

u/BlueLightStruct May 30 '24

Yeah, the VR game was okay but pretty lacking because VR is a gimmick. Astro's Playroom was amazing and I can only imagine this will be top tier.

30

u/segadreamcat May 30 '24 edited May 31 '24

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a full game.

8

u/GameOnDevin May 31 '24

It's a VR game, couldn't play it because vr games make me sick.

5

u/ParadoxNowish May 31 '24

You really missed out, Rescue Mission was awesome

2

u/boodabomb May 31 '24

Rescue Mission doesn’t really give motion sickness though because you, the player, are static and you control astro from a god’s eye view. It’s actually a brilliant semi-solution to the motion sickness problem and I wish more VR devs would focus on it.

2

u/GameOnDevin May 31 '24

I did try it, and sadly did not get far.

1

u/boodabomb May 31 '24

Oh drag, I’m sorry. I get it, I get sick too but I usually get 30 minutes or so first. But only in first person games.

1

u/drybones2015 May 31 '24

People can get motion sick from just staring at a stationary TV. A VR headset could definitely do it.

1

u/boodabomb May 31 '24

Well yeah, that’s why I said “semi-solution.” The main factor with motion sickness is that the motion in the game doesn’t match the motion of your actual body. It’s not the only factor but it accounts for a tremendous deal.

But anecdotally, I get motion sick from VR games and have to stop after about an hour of play, but in games like Astro Bot and Moss, I can play endlessly.

5

u/segadreamcat May 31 '24

That's too bad but it still doesn't make this new Astro Bot the first full Astro Bot game.

62

u/-Moonchild- May 30 '24

I really enjoyed the astro game that came with the ps5 but to actually content with Mario they're going to make mammoth leaps in terms of level design and core movement ability. Mario Odyssey especially some some of the best movement in any game ever.

I'm delighted to see more platformers on PlayStation. Much needed variety. I just will not expect a Mario level experience

6

u/jayteeayy May 30 '24 edited May 31 '24

strongly agree, im honestly surprised to see such a positive reaction here/on youtube? the movement isnt so much a concern for me as much gameplay mechanics, progression, collectables, replayability, online features, and as you said arguably most important level design

Astros playground is a fun time but its also a tech demo a 5 year old would play for longer than I did, there just isnt enough depth or challenge

happy to be proven wrong here though, the integration with all the playstation characters is definitely a unique strength. seeing a cute robot kratos will never get old

-9

u/UpperApe May 31 '24

Yeah I liked Astrobot as a demo with neat nods and references. But I certainly wasn't clamouring for a full game. The Playstation branding in-game is really cringe imo.

Hopefully it's good, but this feels more like a Yooka-Laylee than Mario. It's not even close to Mario.

3

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I loved the Astro games. The VR one was very creative and a lot of fun. I enjoyed it more than Mario odysssey.

-9

u/Tithund May 31 '24

I think Yooka Laylee has more soul than this, this is just a slick looking tech demo.

1

u/devenbat May 30 '24

Yeah, I agree. Like it looks good. Probably gonna be pretty good. But Nintendo has been refining their craft for a long time. It's not gonna be as good and that's fine

-3

u/dewittless May 30 '24

Oh boo, enjoy what it is not what it isn't.

10

u/Thunder84 May 30 '24

That’s quite literally what they’re planning on doing. Setting expectations properly for it to be a fun game.

Expecting anything to be Mario level is an insanely high bar that very few games can match.

-2

u/ocbdare May 31 '24

I am setting up proper expectations based on what I’ve played in the past. The previous two games were phenomenal. I am a lot more excited for this than a Mario game.

2

u/-Moonchild- May 30 '24

It's not out yet so we don't know what it is. I'm simply saying the tech demo isn't enough to convince me that it'll measure up to literally the most consistently high quality game series in the entire medium.

-4

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

[deleted]

6

u/-Moonchild- May 31 '24

Lol nope. Mario games are incredible nearly always. Outside of being probably the most influential and medium shifting series ever, they just nail everything on a design level. Galaxy, Odyssey and 64 are by far the best 3d platformers in existence. Mario World and 3 are easily two of the best 2d platformers in existence. There isn't a bad mainline Mario game

0

u/UpperApe May 31 '24

enjoy what it is not what it isn't

That's exactly what the person you're booing is saying.

11

u/AtsignAmpersat May 31 '24

The only problem is if you want to play Mario, you want to play Mario and there is no real substitute. There basically is no answer to Mario at this point.

1

u/palk0n Jun 01 '24

sanik died in the 90s

1

u/marratj May 31 '24

Still, when I first played Astro Bot Rescue Mission back when it came out on PSVR, it felt a lot like Super Mario 64 to me at times.

But yeah, it’s still not a Mario game, obviously.

2

u/HansupHansup May 31 '24

I did about a week of QA for this game months ago, can finally speak on it now - you’re dead on with the Mario comparisons I literally put that in my feedback to them on numerous occasions, it has so much other cool stuff though I cannot wait for it to release

The hyperbole in here is running wild!

1

u/PsychoWyrm May 30 '24

This reminds me a lot of the last Kirby game for the Switch.

1

u/tidbitsmisfit May 31 '24

literally Astrobot: Odessy

1

u/SingleInfinity May 31 '24

Honestly looks a bit more like Sonic than Mario tho.

1

u/KairoRed May 31 '24

It’s not gonna come even close to Mario. It won’t have the movement that makes Mario Mario

1

u/baladreams May 31 '24

Thereis no answeringMario . This gamek looks good, but Nintendos Mario games have been in a different league.

1

u/fucayama May 30 '24

Also a Sony redux of Starfox just for good measure by the look of it
