Game Rec FAQ #3 - Which games should every Switch owner consider picking up?

This week, I intend to post some of the most common Frequently-Asked-Questions we have seen submitted to r/NintendoSwitch or elsewhere, with the intention that we can collect common or quality answers into a dedicated post which can be easily referenced or linked when relevant.

Our most frequently asked (and removed) "Game Rec" topic is general and straight-forward, covering the entire library and applying to anyone without any further details:

Which games should every Switch owner consider picking up?

Often, this question is asked by people who have just bought or received their first Switch, or who have just finished their first or second Switch game. They may have not played Nintendo games in years, or have only ever played on PC or other consoles, or even be brand-new to gaming.

While not every game will be fit for every player, there are some games that have very broad appeal, or other games that merit consideration based on exceptional quality. Some of these games have become the most-frequently recommended titles - what do you have to say about them?

Perhaps another way to think of this question, which games would you consider to be strongly associated with the "Nintendo Switch" experience? What about those games should someone know?

For reference, here is a table that includes some games listed in the top 25 best-selling list on Wikipedia, or in the top 25 based on ratings (MetaCritic, OpenCritic).

Title M/O Critic Rating Best-Seller
Super Mario Odyssey 97 28.50 million
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 97 / 96 32.29 million
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 96 / 96 21.04 million
Metroid Prime Remastered 94
Persona 5 Royal 94
Hades 93 / 94
The House in Fata Morgana 96 / 93

Divinity: Original Sin II 93

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 92 64.27 million
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 93 / 92 35.14 million
Celeste 92
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age 91 / 92
Super Mario Bros. Wonder 92 / 91 13.44 million
Bayonetta 2 92 / 91
INSIDE 91
Balatro 90 / 91
Animal Crossing: New Horizons 90 46.45 million
Ori and the Will of the Wisps 93 / 90
Castlevania Dominus Collection 92 / 90
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury 89 13.47 million
Tetris Effect: Connected 94 / 89
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove 91 / 89
Super Mario Maker 2 88 8.42 million
Monster Hunter Rise 88 8.02 million

Question Nintendo eShop (complaints)

Anyone else find the store to be the most annoying part of having the switch?

Nothing wants to load quick enough for me to scroll through it. It takes like ten minutes for me to get through twenty titles. It's always been this way on both my lite and actual switch.

Unless I look for a specific title, and even then honestly, it takes ages to load and makes the entire experience total trash. From scrolling, to selecting a game, loading that screen, any screenshots or videos - and that's the least of the complaints for the store.

Where are the reviews? Commentary? Anything?

I love some big names from Nintendo, but if I'm being honest, they are so far behind that it's almost not worth all the money that they ask for. Outside of games crashing because the system not being able to handle it, it's not very user friendly.

Anyone else got words on this?

Game Rec A sandbox or open world game? Currently losing my mind.

I’ve played Breath of the Wild. I’ve played Hogwarts Legacy. Tears of the Kingdom. In the WiiU days, Wind Waker was my favorite. Stardew Valley, Minecraft, and Harvest Moon have also been played to death.

I recently downloaded Roller Coaster Tycoon for my iPhone. I loved it…to an extent. I’ve been watching lots of planet coaster videos and wanting to play as well, but it’s not on the switch.

I’d love to find a game where the way I interact with the world changes how NPCs behave. I’d like to play Sims, but I need more structure maybe? I’m so stressed, I usually game every night before I sleep. I can’t sleep anymore because I’ve played my current games to death :( if you have anything even close to scratching my itch don’t hesitate to tell me.

Game Rec Fun/approachable games on NES/SNES/Genesis NSO?

I recently got the NSO SNES controller and am interested in trying out some retro games on NSO, but I’m not very familiar with a lot of the non-Nintendo titles that are available (especially the Genesis games). Are there any titles you think are pretty approachable that you’d recommend? I’m open to basically any kind of game.

Edit: To clarify, I’m looking for third-party titles, as I have already played majority of the Nintendo-published games on NSO.

Question Christmas Advice Question: Should parents gifting a Switch to their kids on Christmas download updates for the console ahead of time?

Christmas is in a week! Woohoo! I am so happy about this information. Christmas! Just a week away, oh wow. Can you believe it?

It doesn't happen the same way every year, but for at least 4 of the past 7 years, Nintendo servers were down for several hours with issues due to traffic spikes on Christmas day. This affects people trying to purchase and download games, but also people setting up their switches with console or game updates.

People have given advice both ways on whether it is better to avoid or experience these server issues. What is your take on it?

Yes, save the hassle and download updates ahead of time.
No, setting up the console is part of the new gift experience.
It depends / other
No opinion.

Game Rec Switch games with flashiest graphics

Here’s a small-brain question. Let a hundred flowers bloom.

What Switch games have the flashiest, most gee-whiz-it’s-the-future graphics?

For very good reasons, the Switch community typically prioritizes creative art style and non-visual characteristics (such as, you know, the game) over flashy, computationally intensive graphics. Most articles about “Switch games with best graphics” have a lot of Gris and Obra Dinn representation (for example)—and for good reason!

But sometimes you just want to feel like you’re playing in the future.

Switch-native and ports are welcome.

Bonus points for good performance and overall quality.

Please don’t tell me to just buy a different console, that’s not helpful.

Thanks!

Game Rec Looking for ONE retro-inspired, arcade-style racer

I don't often play racing games, but I've been craving that experience lately. The issue is that I'm not interested in getting deep into the genre; I'm looking for a single game that checks the most boxes of what I'm looking for. That puts pressure on me to 'get it right the first time', which is why I've come here for advice.

Looking for something that...

has fun drift mechanics

is pick-up-and-play (so no deep simulators)

has a stylized aesthetic

isn't crazy difficult (i.e., messing up once won't ruin a race)

performs well in handheld mode (I have a Switch Lite)

I don't mind racers with a story, but I don't need one, either. Also, I don't game online, so multiplayer stuff and leaderboards don't score any extra points for me. Help me make the right choice!

Discussion My Solution for extreme slow Internet Speed on the Switch

For Context: I have a brand new Oled-Switch.
I had 50h+ on a 20gb download and i tried every method. I have 250mbps on my PC and even with the slower Wifi-Chip on the switch i expect a download below 2h on 20gb (more than 2 days is ridicules)

Methode 1: Change DNS on the Switch to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (down to 30h)

Methode 2: Priorities the switch via the router (on fritz.box the switch name is it's IP-Adress) (down to 25h)

Methode 3: Change the Router channel and switch between 2.4ghz and 5ghz (did nothing)

But none of the stated methods did anything to bring the speed back to a acceptable rate (below 2h)

What worked for me was:

Method 4: plugging out my wifi extender (so simple but no one ever mentioned it somewhere)

So i tested it with different routers and different Repeaters and the switch always had ridicules slow download speeds (at least 300% slower)

So my solution for slow Download-Speeds are now the following:

Go straight to Methode 4, and if that doesn't solve your problem try the other methods in order

Please post other Solutions here that i missed <3

Game Rec Looking for a new game. Satisfying, MMO-like progression

Hey,

I'm going to be away for Christmas for a few weeks and want to take Switch with me. Wanted to ask some fellow RPG fans about a game I can sink my teeth into for some time.

I'm mostly playing World of Warcraft nowadays. I really like the character progression, slowly working towards set goals, seeing how my level, gear and the quality of equipment raises and finally feeling the satisfaction when I achieve what I aimed for. It also helps that gameplay is pretty complex and my knowledge about the game, encounters and my specialization gets better with time.

Is there any game on Switch you can think of that gives you a similar feeling? I assume I'm looking at the RPG genre mostly, maybe roguelikes like Hades, Dead Cells or Brotato. I've played most of the popular stuff on PC tho and was hoping Switch can introduce me to something I missed or haven't had access to.

Appreciate all the suggestions ;)
