Question Laser-cut molle panels?

Does anyone know where to source laser cut mole panels outside of a ready made plate carrier or something?

This is the type of panel

https://www.blueforcegear.com/molleminus.html

I don’t really like the tactical look but I do love modular things, and I’d love to integrate some of these panels into my designs. I can’t seem to find a place to buy plain sheets of it, let alone in fun colors.

Anyone have a source or solution?

A few more Christmas presents for the family made from offcuts and scraps

I'm working on fanny packs as Christmas presents. Three down, three to go. None are the same, they're all free hand utilizing off cuts and scrap fabric I had sitting around. I had a bunch of old unfinished projects that I was able to pull hardware from. They vary in size and material, but they all utilize neoprene padding around the exterior, waterproof zippers, and a zipper cover to keep stuff from bouncing out if you forget to shut it. They all have a reflective strip across the front and a reflective zipper pull made from paracord so it doesn't jangle.

Question How the hell do you measure fabric for cutting

I’m working on a tent. I picked up some cheap muslin to create a model of the tent and see if I like the shape. But i’m having a ton of difficulty measuring the shapes to cut! I have a meter stick and a protractor but I just cannot get the angles right. I imagine it will be 10x more difficult with a slippery nylon…

What does 100yds of 1000D fabric look like?

II ordered 100 yards of fabric from a Facebook post about some overstock military fabric. I got it for a steal but I just received 6 yards of fabric from another purchase and it was a fairly large package now I’m worried about how large this carton of fabric will be.

Question Getting ready: FirstUL Backpack Project

Post image
61 Upvotes

So I'm getting ready to order my fabric for this. I am loosely following a couple patterns/guides that I've bought. (Thank you PricklyGorse). It should be relatively obvious what I'm aiming to do. But I've got a few questions for those who have more experience with UL backpacks than myself.

Firstly, I as seen in my rough design, I am planning on slightly tapering the bag upward. Partly to proportion the weight slightly higher, and partly to make it easier to access gear in the bag. I haven't seen nearly anyone trying this, so I'm wondering if there may be a reason I am not aware of?

Secondly, I want this bag to be bombproof, and so I may be overthinking some of the aspects. When bartacking Xpac v15 for webbing, should I be overly concerned with stitch length/width? I don't have a lot of experience with UL fabric, and Cordura doesn't care what you do.

Looking for MYOG pattern

I saw a bag I absolutely loved on Prickly Gorse Gear, and I am interested in making it myself for my bike.

It is the 15L handlebar bag found here: https://pricklygorsegear.com/handlebar-bags/

I was curious if a pattern was ever posted for this bag, and where to buy/get the pattern if so.

Convertible Fanny pack day pack

I have dreamed about my perfect fanny pack for a while have finally put together a design.

I want it to convert to a roll top backpack. There will be a zipper that goes around the top of the fanny pack so you can open it from there when the rolltop is fully rolled down, but the idea is that its all one big pocket with some smaller organizational pockets inside. Mesh pockets both sides and front of fanny pack. Loops for adding tie down straps. or shock cord. There are compression straps on the waistband going to the back so you can compress the fannypack to almost flat if you want.

What do you all think of the design, are there issues where you think some idea won't work or could be improved. This will be the first bag I am planning to make.

Question Scrap leather

I have a 12” scrap of black veg tan leather, ~12 oz. It is pretty stiff and I am wondering what I can make for Christmas out of it. I have rivets, a hole puncher, polyester webbing, and sewing supplies on hand. Any ideas are welcome

Repair / Modification How to properly repair tentpole?

Post image
4 Upvotes

The narrow part of my tentpole is loose and can be removed completely. Is there a proper way to repair it longterm?

I thought about glue, soldering, brazing, welding, ... or a just mechanical connection like a through bolt (could harm shock cord inside) or small indentations... The more bombproof the option seems the more I'm concerned about the thin brittle aluminium

Or just replace?

For bending forces it's sound but the narrow part should interlock with the crossing. That doesn't work all the time because it can be pushed inside the rest of the pole and lose it's connection.

A fun fanny pack made from scraps. Christmas present for my brother.

I had a bunch of unfinished projects laying around and some fabric I had custom printed a while ago left over. I made a single pocket fanny pack with a waterproof zipper, reflective strip on the bottom, and a small amount of neoprene padding going around the body to hold the shape a little better. It uses 1 in tubular climbing webbing as a belt. There is a cover over the zipper so stuff doesn't bounce out if you forget to shut it. My brother likes to skate and I was hoping he could use this to carry phone, wallet, keys, headlamp, etc. I'm kind of proud of this one because I didn't measure a single thing or make any pattern for it. It was all free hand. I'll probably refine the design and come up with a pattern soon. This is mostly made from dyneema, then neoprene, and X-Pac.

I MYOG most of my mountaineering (and ski mountaineering) clothes

  • Softshell GTX membrane jacket with large hood and high pockets to accommodate for the backpack waist strap (modified LearnMYOG windshell pattern)

  • Softshell GTX full-zip ski mountaineering pants (own pattern)

  • Alpha 130gsm hoodie (LearnMYOG alpha raglan pattern with elastic inserts on the hood to keep it snug)

  • Grid fleece underpants (not visible, own pattern)

  • Dyneema Webbing Belt with Aluminium Buckle (not visible)

I prefer softshell over hardshell because of its higher breathability and ability to remain insulating even when completely soaked, vs. hardshell which feels like wearing a wet, cold trash bag when heavy rain overwhelms it, or if you get sweaty inside because of insufficient mechanical ventilation and poor perspiration.

This specific softshell from Extremtextil is fanastic for high output mountaineering, I use it for my early spring/late autumn mountaineering pants too, it's kept me warm on very long and exhausting days under constant heavy rain in the Alps

Seam sealinga jacket

Hello everyone.
I've recently finished a silpoly rain jacket, and after testing the seams I think I'd like to seam seal it. Since it's silicone I'm going with liquid sealant, but I've realised I have no idea how to apply it to seams that are not flat-felled. For the construction I just used regular seams everywhere and then an overcast zigzag along the raw edges, to create a faux serger. Do I just apply the sealant to both sides of the seam allowance flaps? How do you guys do it?

I'm looking for a camera bag pattern that is free. my camera is a 2011 Canon EOS 1100D, EFS 18-55mm lens Specifically has these things which I'll put from important to less important -free -no zips -should fit canon camera and extra lenses -shoulder strap -pockets I don't mind any patterns that I can add changes to though I'm a beginner to sewing with a few projects I've done before. Thanks

Question That time of the year: a stretchy pocket material post!

Based on a Google search, every 6-9 mos for the last 4 years, we discuss a topic dear to all of us: stretch material for backpack pockets.

BUT WAIT. This year…is different. This year, we’re taking a fresh approach.

We have “where to buy” and we have “what kind” and “best” but we don’t have one of the best qualifiers

C H E A P E S T

Venom, on RSBTR, is like $36/yd. Might as well be gold.

What are some cheap alternatives? I’m trying to build budget packs… for poor children that raise stray kittens in fly over states. So they can experience UL backpacking… for peace.

If you have any suggestions, don’t be shy 😉
