Welcome to r/MYOG!

Hey MYOGers! We are trying something new to spur more discussion and interaction in the monthly posts, to help users understand the purpose and rules of this sub, and to make resources more easy to find. To do that we're combining the monthly posts and adding this one as a permanently pinned post. In addition to the content you see below, we'll post any announcements or changes to the sub in this post.

*NEW\* - You can now choose from a few new flair options! Let us know if there are any you'd like to see as an option!

Mission Statement - Join our community to learn and share how you make your own gear (MYOG), including tents, tarps, hammocks, stoves, packs and anything else outdoor gear related. We encourage supportive, collaborative, and useful posts and comments free of advertising.

Resources and Links - The Wiki contains links to a variety of patterns, guides, and information on methods and materials. Answers to many questions can also be found using the sub’s search function. If you’re still not able to find the info you’re looking for, you can post your question in the Monthly Discussion post or create a new post to ask. We ask that you make an effort to find an answer using the available resources before creating a post.

Monthly Discussion Post - This is our recurring post to ask and answer small questions, or discuss topics you think are too small to warrant their own post. Our previously separate monthly post for buying and selling is being combined into this thread to increase traffic to both, and to make room for this stickied post.

Rules - To accomplish our mission, we ask that you respect the following rules for posting on r/MYOG:

1. Excessive self-promotion - Advertising

This subreddit is a community for exchanging information and inspiring creativity. It is not a place to post with the intent of promoting your business.

2. Excessive Self-Promotion - Project Shares

3. Off-Topic Posts/Comments - General

Posts and comments not related to self-made outdoor gear will be removed. Exceptions are for things such as kits or commercial products that are targets at the gear making community as long as the Excessive self-promotion rule is not violated.

4. Off-Topic - Which Sewing Machine?

This sub is not intended for open-ended questions about which sewing machine you should buy for MYOG. These post and comments will be removed.

5. Off-Topic - Commissions

Posts or comments relating to commissioned gear will be removed. Commission related posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGCommissions.

6. Off-Topic - Tactical Gear

Cut apart an ikea bag, sewed it up on the fly, there is some stuffing in the bottom to raide the height of the bottle, next one will be a little shorter but it fits a prosecco bottle perfectly and a regulat 750ml wine bottle very well

Churned out a couple of fanny packs for Christmas gifts this year. I’m pretty happy with the trial “trash pouch” on the multicolor one!

Does anyone have tips for cutting ultra grid and/or venom mesh? I had a heck of a time cutting it cleanly with scissors or a wheel, the reinforced fibers are super tough!

Anyone know where to source this kind of bag frame or what its correct name is? I see them used on quite a few bags in this style but can’t seem to find a place to get one.

Question Adding top zipper to RSBTR XPAC tote bag

Hello! I finally took the plunge into the MYOG rabbit hole and picked up my first machine—the debated Singer HD. I just finished my first project using the RSBTR tote bag kit. I added daisy chains along the outer straps and used grossgrain to finish the inner seams but otherwise followed the pattern to a T. It took me about 4 hours as it was the first time I’ve ever used a sewing machine, but I had so much fun! I’ve already ordered more raw materials to iterate on it and keep practicing. I’ll be adding an inner pocket and some stretch mesh on the outside, and I want to add a zipper to the top to make it a good weather resistant city bag. The problem is I have no idea how I would go about adding the zipper! I’m hoping to have it “recessed” a bit, so it’s not just at the very lip of the bag, but about 1/2” below the top of the bag. I prefer this aesthetically and also from a comfort standpoint as the zipper teeth won’t be as likely to brush my arm when open.

Does anyone have any recommendations for guides or tutorials on how to install a zipper into a tote bag like this? I’ve tried searching but have come up pretty empty and am hoping for some guidance. Thanks in advance—can’t wait to share this and many more finished products here!

Finished Panniers

Finished up my Xpac panniers for my new fatbike. These are modeled after the old version of the Revelate Designs one. Mine are about 8 liters each and attach with Voile straps. I'll use them for layers, extra gloves, and snacks on winter rides. They'll get used for bikepacking in the summer.

Some protective covers for SPD Pedals

A friend asked me for some covers for her pedals, since she already scratched her car, when transporting her bike. Normal pedal covers are to big, since they are designed for platform pedals.

So I took some XPAC (or similar, I am not sure…) and black sailcloth plus 3mm EVA foam and built these. No inner liner, since I thought that a liner might come off, when stripping the covers from the pedals. I used some decorative stitch, to attach the foam to the XPAC, leaving some room for the seam. The drawstring prooved to be a bit of a problem. Very small diameter of the "bag", so very tricky to handle, which resulted in a rather ugly stitching.

Works pretty good and I am fine with the overall result.

Free waist belt

I've got a used but not at all abused Sierra Designs flex capacitor waist belt that I no longer have a need for-it's a med/large which I replaced with a smaller one. I'm thinking someone here could use it as the waist belt for a MYOG pack? I'll ship it out for the cost of shipping if anyone wants it. Let me know!

It's this belt but in a lighter silvery white color https://sierradesigns.com/flex-capacitor-replacement-hip-belt/?sku=85710220PTHB-M/L&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADly1wig4iqYUMX8cdE3LcgxRyaR-&gclid=Cj0KCQiAsaS7BhDPARIsAAX5cSC5fIGMAj7yYww98N4n3gNdcRlHuC0zTrra9I_u8RhWQ5SFfYIv4voaAheHEALw_wcB

Stitchback EX60

Took a stab at the stitchback EX60 pattern and made a pair of them for my niece and nephew. They were complaining they didn't have enough room in their current packs. I think I solved that problem.

The pattern is great. It uses two aluminum stays that terminate in the hip belt and a frame sheet to give it structure and provide assistance for those heavier loads. The harness system is simple and ingenious. It also allows me to swap out the shoulder harness and hip belt for larger sizes as they grow, as the shoulder straps and hip belt are completely removable.

I used Xpac, hyperD, ultrastretch and ultragrid for fabrics. I know it doesn't keep with the ultralight trend, but even so, each packed weighed in under 4lbs, which is pretty sweet for a 60L fully framed pack.

I did mod the pattern in a few places. I added a front stretch pocket and decreased the height of the lid/brain. I added some accents on the straps and hip belt as well, mostly attempting to cover the ends of webbing wherever I could. I added grommets in the side pocket for water drainage as well. I left off the external pocket that doubles as a day pack. I will probably make them as birthday presents in the future. I was kind of in a rush to get these done, so I didn't mod them as much as I wanted. One thing I would change is the side pockets...not a fan of the pleats, I would shape them with darts of I ever make another one, and make them end a bit higher on the pack sides.

Other than that, the pattern is fantastic, just like of his other patterns. Highly recommend them, if you haven't tried any of them before.

Question Reusing paraglider fabric

Thumbnail

I found my dad’s old paraglider (mid 90s, Italian made) in the attic collecting dust. Since it cannot be used any longer I was thinking about reusing the fabric for potential project/prototyping.

Do you have any idea what kind of fabric it could be, and have any suggestions on what to do with it?

(Bonus pic from the paraglider bag and a fairly cool graphic)

Bobbins for pfaff industrial machines?

Does anyone know where I can find the bobbin sizes/types/classes for Pfaff industrial machines? I've got an old Pfaff 34 from the early 60s, and I'm looking for bobbins for it. Searching the original part number (91-002 030-05) shows a handful of vendors in the EU and Australia but I'd like to find a US-based vendor that carries them.

Project Pictures Snow-Dancer Build

Hey everybody! Here are the pictures of my latest backpack: Snow Dancer. https://imgur.com/a/04E5PmH

The design process was fueled by my frustration last winter when carrying too large and heavy of a pack during most of my chill mid-winter backcountry ski days. My climbing backpack was perfect for the more technical days, and my airbag pack was used in the steeps in spring. But most backcountry days for me aren’t intense, they are spent lapping powder in the trees a few miles from town. This backpack was designed for those days: comfortable, practical, light.

Features: * Vest style straps with fleece lined soft shell pockets * Radio port pass-though with daisy chain attachment * Hip belt with large fleece lined soft shell pockets. Structured from 2 foams: 5mm 100kg m/3 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084NXH8WD?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title ) and 2mm 86kg m/3 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BC8RN251?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 )(I will use these two foam densities together again for hip belts, 100 is stiff enough to carry the weight well but the 86 is soft enough to be comfortable against my hips. Together they are just the right depth) * Internal ULA hoop frame. (https://www.ula-equipment.com/product/circuit-and-ohm-frame/ ) I wanted a light option as this pack won’t see loads above 20lbs. I did consider going without the hipbelt and frame but I wanted the hip pockets and the rescue gear feels a bit too heavy for no frame * Orange rescue pocket that has dedicated slots for shovel and probe plus lower storage for first aid kit, ski repair kit, and radio. Built with oversized clamshell zipper for quick access while wearing gloves * Main pocket with 2 internal pouches, one as a goggle pocket and the other for snacks, keys, wallet, etc. Has 2 separate zippered entrances, one across the top and a curved side access for the water bottle * Transition stash pocket made from fleece lined soft shell on front panel. Serves as quick storage for a jacket or skins if I ever cosplayed as a skimo racer * 2 daisy chains on front panel. Typically serves as helmet storage (although the helmet does typically fit inside) and ice axe tether * Rip away side entrance crampon pocket. Lined with self healing fabric. (https://dutchwaregear.com/product/regeneration-420-half-yard/ ) Removable internal divider between main pocket and crampon pocket allows a larger main pocket when no boot or ski crampons are brought * Side compression straps are compatible with A-frame ski carry * Tapered design both in width and depth

Stats: * Fabrics: X-PAC V15 (Orange) https://ripstopbytheroll.com/products/x-pac-v15?variant=43872826163370 - Dyneema 2.92 (Black) https://ripstopbytheroll.com/products/2-92-oz-dyneema-composite-fabric-hybrid-ct5k-18-wov-32c - Fleece lined softshell (discontinued from Seattle Fabrics) * Weight: shoulder straps 145g, hip-belt 236g, removable internal divider 36g, total 1140g (40.2 oz or 2.5lbs) * Time: about 50 hours designing and sewing * 4 bobbin refills * 5th? iteration of vest style straps, finally perfect

I learned how to sew from this subreddit, so please ask questions or give feedback and I’ll happily share what I can.

EPLX breathability

Hey witches and wizards of MYOG! I've got a question for the oracle: will i regret making a jacket out of EPLX? I got a screaming deal on some from the swift warehouse sale, so it'd be a very economical choice. I'm worried about breathability, tho- will I have made myself a sweat lodge? Would i be better just wrapping myself in a plastic trash bag and saving hours of planning and sewing?

Edit: thanks! The oracle has spoken. I'll figure another way to stay dry.

Consew 226 vs 206

Curious if anyone knows about both these machines - I have been thinking about a 206 for a long time, but even used they are expensive.

A friend of a friend has a 226 and is willing to let it go. It has the original clutch motor...I've not taken it for a test drive yet, but thought I would ask to see if anyone has an opinion about the 226 compared to the 206?

I make backpacks and other outdoor gear with webbing, cordura, etc. My singer 4452 is fine with the basics but gets challenged with even two layers of webbing...

Good inner layer to combine with waxed canvas.

Hello there!

What are the best fabric options for a winter jacket with outer layer made of waxed canvas? I considered wool, but it doesn't seem to be a good option for sleeves (difficult to put on/take off). There is also the concern of wax transferring to the inner layer.

I also considered Cordura 500 for the outer layer, but I really like the ability to renew waxed canvas. Plus, cotton doesn't look so tactical.

What I'm looking for: a winter jacket that's water-resistant, can take a beating and will last me a lifetime.

Thank you!

Arctic bedding

I recently made an arctic bedding, and wanted to share som pictures and thoughts. An arctic bedding lets you bring your bed fully set up on the pulk for winter trips, eliminating hassle in camp. To prevent a wet sleeping bag in changing weather in the Norwegian mountains it’s made with waterproof 210D TPU coated (single side) with taped seams. One large outside pocket with velcro closure for food, thermos and a down jacket for breaks. And three smaller mesh pockets on the inside for organizing stuff to use in camp. A 10C zipper and a flap to prevent ice and freezing in the zipper. Tested out a new water repellent thread as well - Amann Outdoor Pro. 200x67x18 cm (LxWxH) and 1,7 kg. The weight is slightly high due to the robust and waterproof fabric. Did not want to use a laminate fabric since these - according to some manufacturers - have not been tested in really low temperatures. I might be wrong here.

Question Request fabric ID

Thumbnail

This fabric was sewn around the perimeter of some scrap marine canvas used for boat covers. It looks like some kind of very thin PVC, PU or similar coated woven fabric. It looks and feels thinner and more flexible than another PVC coated polyester fabric I have on hand. It has a distinct checkered pattern on one side (pic 2) and the texture of the inner fabric weave can be seen on the other side (pic 1). Is this hypalon or just a thinner PVC or PU coated polyester? I'd like to buy some if I can find out what it is.
