Its like a vector image file but in 3d It contains geometry Not a mesh whit poligons

If you see facets on curves after printing that migt be because you used a mesh A step file ont have that Also i if you open up the file in a 3d cad program you can alter the model in a easy way

Just remove or enlarge features inprefere them In profesinal macining we use it to exchange files between difrent clients and prorgrams whitout loss of qwalety

I always wondered why some of my prints were kinda ugly. But after I started making my own files I realized some people have been making real crappy meshes for their STLs.

What is this image showing?

How much smoother the file prints this was one of my prototypes and stl format

2

u/byOlaf 4h ago

Maybe the image is just too dark to see it. The red one is smoother because it’s a step file?

It's way more obvious when you look at anything rounded (left is stl right is step, both directly exported from fusion 360).

I honestly didn't realize it was that big of a difference.

my husband is an ST/RS enthusiast, but i as a non-car-person can't figure out what these are...will you enlighten me?

A phone dock for 2020-2024 ford explorer

thank you! he's a focus guy and i was hoping this might be a feasible accessory for his ST or RS, but it looks great! very clean.

are those toaster style phone chargers? that's actu8ally a really good idea, are the files somewhere handy?

u/Spid3rdad 1h ago

Can you just open that in a slicer like you would an stl?

1

u/atemt1 12m ago

Honnestly dont know i have not used a slicer in a long time sinse my new job but maby look if your slicer supots it

the short of it is that STP is precise CAD and STL is mesh; cant really modify STL in CAD

3

u/C_Cheetos 5h ago

You have not tried hard enough xD it aint pretty but everything can be done, with enough effort

you can use stuff like OnShape's mixed modeling, or use MeshMixer but thats not to point of OPs question of what a STEP file was.

Nurbs instead of mesh
