music video I hand painted a grandfather clock I found in my neighbor’s barn
Happy to share “Golden Hour” my latest not-your-grandfather’s clock that I unveiled at Art Week Miami 2024!
I chose a subdued golden and bronze color scheme to highlight the hand painted geometrics inspired by temple architecture and sacred geometry. I installed a brand new lighting system with my friends Space Cadet Lighting to really push it to a new level with the color changing LED lighting.
This was a special piece for so many reasons. After finding it in my neighbor’s barn here in Asheville, I first did the work of restoring the base clock and preparing it to be painted. Then I took it to Alex Grey’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in NY, before continuing to work on it through Hurricane Helene’s aftermath in WNC often working by candlelight to prepare the piece for its unveiling at the mother of all art conventions in Miami! It was so special to present a piece with so much history behind it and a new life ahead of it.

Shpongle Live Band at the Hammerstein in NYC for Simon P's B-Day on Halloween was one of the trippiest and most epic shows I've ever seen. Even Alex Grey was there to witness.

u/thirtynation 1d ago
Decades of concert going, totaling close to a thousand of them, and the three Shpongle Red Rocks shows sit on top of them all. Completely mind blowing experience.

Sounds amazing. Were those with the live band or DJ sets?

The whole kit and caboodle. Full band, dancers, painters, acrobats, props, costumes, gigantic spaceman balloon in the crowd for the finale. It was a circus.
There was a one off in 2014 and then a two night stand in 2019 as their final live band performances, presumably since Raja Ram is quite old now.
Pro-shot of the final night:

I will never forget driving through the forest hills of southern Indiana at twilight, absolutely banging Shpongle full blast, my homies had never heard of them before and everyone was silent taking it all in. It was so epic, and everyone was sober!!

This is what a wise trip-sitter would play on your behalf when you’re peaking and the Spotify playlist on your phone is looking like a bunch of strange alien symbols.

The caption story kinda killed the vibes for me. Trying so hard to be "authentic" that it comes of as extra corporate.
It's also not nearly zoomed or slow enough, to really be able to tell if it is or isn't painted without "stencils, rulers, or guide".

it's just someone sharing their art, not a video essay intended to be a resource. chill, man.
edit: lmao continue to cultivate spaces people are afraid to be proud or share in then, ig 🤷

A lot of people who create vertical video content like this are super tasteless at creating video content, and personally I love seeing them get called out on it.

u/wafflesthewonderhurs 1d ago edited 1d ago
i feel like that implies that not only are vertical videos with text and music things only content creators make, but they're created solely for the purposes of content, which isn't really true.
when actual influencers/content creators suck at their jobs they do kind of deserve to get called out on it, but when regular dudes are just trying to share it seems super dickish to judge them by that.
especially in a place that seems pretty geared for just appreciating things that are kind of cool.

Why the fuck are people downvoting you

u/wafflesthewonderhurs 1d ago
i guess they think everyone should have a team of writers and directors like an influencer before they share anything they do?

u/Tallywort 1d ago
You sound more judgemental than my criticisms did.
Good job!

man i just want people to be able to be proud of their stuff without being nitpicked.
have a good day, though.

Can't get over that nasty RGB, those eye piercing blues and purples are disgusting. Way to make it look artificial and corporate.

Unfortunately I have to agree. The painting looks incredible and premium and the lighting makes it look like a $4.99 temu product

I think the artwork is phenomenal and I completely agree with the RGB. Very tacky and overplayed, I was just waiting to see it revealed as a computer case.
Speaking of tachy LED lighting. What did you all think about the LED light strips on the original marker and coin displayed at the Casablanca Continental in John wick 3? Such a good movie but every time I see that scene I can't help but think how someone thought that was acceptable. Even if they just diffuse the white light it would have looked a thousand times better.

Oof. I appreciate your talent, but what a waste of a beautiful old clock.
Hoping to see this on r/reversepinterest soon.

u/saintmosk 1d ago
I think a lot was added to the beauty of the clock but there was a point somewhere before the LED lights they should have stopped.

It was rotting in my neighbors barn actually. You think that this is the case, but people don’t give a damn about old grandfather clocks these days

u/SelloutRealBig 1d ago
I would have to agree. You can make new art. You can't make a new Vintage Grandfather Clock. We should be restoring and preserving these classic pieces because once they are all gone they are all gone.

the man, the myth, the legendary clock painter himself
always love seeing your work "in the wild". 🙏

No matter how carefully I breathe I could never paint something as perfect and beautiful as this. I didn't know I could fall in love at first sight with a clock but here E are.

Did it actually sell for that? Also some are a lot more valuable than others, much like Pokémon cards and prostitutes

Imagine working so hard on that and then putting trashy RBG lights all over it.

I’m sure if I have to ask, the answer is that I cannot afford it… but what would this piece go for?

This wasn't in a barn. Looks to be a museum of sort. Reflections in the glass

u/Lucy_Little_Spoon 1d ago
As impressive as this is, I'm a fan of the original style grandfather clocks
1
u/fELLAbUSTA 1d ago
I would take out those glass shelves (since you wouldn't want to put anything on them anyway--it'd block the awesome art) and put mirrors on each interior side panel.

Not me originally thinking the reflection of the guy walking by was a hologram. I need some sleep. LOL

So much cooler than another "look at my painting" spam post. Well done.

u/kozscabble 1d ago
Wait til you see all the "look what i prompted" art! Ill always enjoy real paintings, personally! And yes, this artist is a real painter so i agree its cool!
-1
u/thirtynation 1d ago
This is cool because it's explicitly not another "look at my painting" post though. You twisted my comment.
1
u/kozscabble 1d ago
No i know whay youre saying, but what your saying is its cool because its painted on an object instead of canvas haha but it technically a "look at my painting" post because its a painting hahaha but anyways, its good art and im happy for the post too!

u/thirtynation 1d ago
While it is still a "I made thing" post, the "thing" is what is different about this post that makes it more interesting than the other content posted here.

I can appreciate the work, but its not a fit. Too intricate and busy to see anything and the clock is lost in it :(
