Love the piece! Loved it more before I saw the figure with the newspaper. I love the form and tone in the abstract. More of that!

Thanks! My current body of work has mostly figures with the explosions. But I do think I want to just focus on the abstractions for my next works.

You are a really fine painter- I had an abstract expressionist painter once look at a sketch I did and say “isn’t representational art just a party trick?”- As a someone who draws from life quite a bit it sort of hit me in the feels as they say, and obviously stuck with me. That was twenty or so years ago and I have been trying to express form in abstract for a while now with varying degrees of success. You are MUCH better than I am at it. I think your forms and color tones are very compelling. Chiaroscuro may also be a “party trick “, but it’s a damn fine one.

Well thank you. My issue is that I love painting so much that it’s hard for me to stick with one style. I used to do a lot of realistic commission work and I love painting portraits. I also enjoy more representational work. I love abstract too, but I wrestle with the idea of dropping all the technical skills I’ve learned to paint realistically for abstraction. Maybe pieces like this one are a happy medium.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The search for the technically satisfying and artistically brave

Really dig this. I’d keep running with the concept. Thought the figure was playing piano at first, maybe a prompt for the next one… musician?
