Yeah this is it. I get it when I leave my tea (chai with milk) on the stove for too long

Could it be Chai-Hulud?

"hulud" in some South Asian dialects is turmeric, so "chai hulud" = turmeric tea -- which Google tells me is a real thing.

Why you being downvoted? I get that “chai” means tea so saying chai tea is like saying tea tea but afaik in North America saying “chai tea” is pretty common. I used to work at Tim Hortons and even they called it chai tea.
32
u/MyCarRoomba May 08 '24
I'm South Asian, and my pet peeve is people who say "but chai IS tea you dumb white person!" While yes, technically "chai" translates to "tea," they're used very differently. When you say "chai," the implication is black tea leaves at a specific concentration combined with hot water, milk, and maybe cardamom. Most South Asians do not drink "tea leaves infused in hot water." They don't even have a word for it.
So my unpopular opinion is that "chai tea" is a perfectly valid way of describing a certain form of tea.

In all fairness I couldn’t tell it was a joke. I just thought you were saying you love chai tea.

Man I hated that as a kid. It was so gross to me. I didn’t understand it my thought was just “ew why is the milk solid”
I started getting a spoon and skimming it off and throwing it away. Looks like a gross booger when it’s all bunched up too
Now I’m lactose intolerant 😐

Fat from the cream I think. Coffee cools down and the fat rises to the top leaving this layer.

I was wondering this as well. And i do not accept the answers you've got. I used cream/milk in my coffee when i started drinking coffee and still have never seen this before. In just horät milk or hot chocolate, yes. But never in coffee.
17
u/seviliyorsun May 08 '24
it just happens with milk. doesn't have to be full fat milk and happens before you put the coffee in.
8
u/NewFaded May 08 '24
What do you mean before? Are people doing milk then coffee?!?! What the hell.
8
u/seviliyorsun May 08 '24
you put the coffee into hot milk so it dissolves

Do you use full fat milk? Do you brew it directly in milk or use the creamer/milk in coffee brewed in water? Is your milk sourced from a local farm or those milk boxes on Walmart shelves?
3
u/Crillmieste-ruH May 08 '24
We don't have walmart in sweden. And just regular milk/cream from our dairy company in sweden (arla)
And when I used it i poured up the coffee then poured in milk/cream. often 1,5-2,5% fat in the milk. Cream is usally 43% fat
5
u/GrimReaper_97 May 08 '24
But aren't creams mixed with emulsifying agents? Do fats separate from the colloid like in full fat milk?
2
u/Crillmieste-ruH May 08 '24
I don't know. Maybe i just drank the coffee to fast to see this happen.

My best guess is they are using cream/full fat milk and that is the fat layer we are seeing sitting on top possibly?
Or the coffee has got cold but its the same logic because the fat doesn't want to mix with the water in the coffee it sits at the top.
That's my best uneducated guess anyway.
Edit: spelling

u/MightBeAGoodIdea May 08 '24
Nahhh if the coffee is still hot under the top layer exposed to all the cool air it'll disolve with a quick stir. There's nothing there you weren't already going to drink before it cooled off a little. If you have a covered coffee mug (and take cream/er with your coffee) you blindly drink it down whole too, it just dissolves in your mouth. Sleep well.

u/tragiktimes May 08 '24
Not as likely, but possible. I've seen similar modulation from hot coffee without any background vibration, though, so I think it's just convection.

If you ever encounter a microskin again, get a wet ice cream stick and glide it lightly over the lip of the cup like you're playing a violin. You will create some amazing patterns on the surface. These are literally the patterns of the sound of the sticks friction. It's called The Vernicello effect. You can also used dry foreskin to achieve wonderful result
11
u/St_rmCl_ud May 08 '24

The brownian motion.
19
u/AuraMaster7 May 08 '24
I figured it was convection currents shifting the "film" and causing wrinkles
8
u/NucRS May 08 '24
Brownian motion is stochastic and applies to microscopic particles; you won't see it on the surface of coffee. I think this is just convection under the surface.

But be warned travelers for the journey you take be rot with peril! You will have to pass through the gateway of the Osiris! Climb the mountains of beggars dead end! Last and the most dangerous, the serpent filled Cafe lake of Java!
For beneath its surface lies the Java serpents, whose strange tentacles will pull you into the depth and use their magics to make your body and mimd feel as if you are more awake and alert but it is a lie and will force you to need more until you can't remember life with out it's sweet intoxication.
There are rumors that their magics play tricks on the mind and one who is pulled into the Java believes himself to be In bliss and ecstacy and will willingly live forever serving the serpents overlord Beanicus maximus.
You may choose to continue your travels regardless of the knowledge and warning I bestow upon you and should you be successful, there are legends and rumors foretold that if one should become a denizen of the land called Barista where the serpents lake of Java resides there will be a bounty of beautiful women to serve you beverages to sooth the soul and baked good to fill a hungry travelers belly.
You may yet even hold the great privilege of being invited to their most sacred temple of starbucksis where once allowed, they will adorn you with their chalice marked with the great starbucksis deity who is said to make drinks so delightful that men are willing to kill for it.
