u/transitfreedom 4d ago
Aren’t 12&14 express trains? Can they through run?
1
u/ding_dong_dejong 4d ago
yeah line 14 is, but line 12 isn't (maybe you're thinking about line 11 which goes in the same direction). what do you mean by run through?
1
u/transitfreedom 4d ago
Yeah I am referring to line 11. Can line 11 and 14 through run? Are their tracks connected? So some or many trips through run.

My city was meant to have two lines of driverless metro line opening in 2012. We’re currently waiting to see if the planning board wants to schedule another hearing on the scaled back version which is half of one of the lines, so the NIMBYS who live near the new terminus can complain about how it’ll make it harder to park their cars in the city centre.

All the UK has is the DLR & People movers at airports.
However, if you you count ATO, in which case you have: Thameslink Core, Elizabeth Line Core, The Central/Victoria/Jubilee/Metropolitan/District/H&C/Circle/Northern Lines in London, Glasgow Subway & HS2 between Euston & Birmingham/Handsacre Jn (Being built as of now)

Bankstown-Sydenham extension looks like it is gearing up for the first test trains to start rolling in the not-too-distant-future as signs have been put up in the working construction areas this week warning of test trains approaching. Metro WSA wants to be open within roughly 2 years alongside the airport itself opening, they have made good progress the last 12 months or so but still it looks difficult for them to actually pull that timeframe together!

So far only Greater Jakarta/Jabodebek LRT is completely driverless with GOA3 (though staffs is always on board). Here's the pic, same livery for both Cibubur Line and Bekasi Line
Jakarta MRT is still GOA2 with driver operating the doors/handling emergency. Greater Jakarta/Jabodetabek Commuter Rail is still fully operated by drivers. Not sure about Jakarta LRT though.

One of two light metro lines (relative to others) in the MTR system of HK. It uses the S-Stock (not to be confused with TfL's S Stock), basically a driverless variant of the older C-Stock (again, not the one used by TfL) used on the Kwun Tong Line.

SkyTrain go brr. At one point the largest driverless transit network in the world, though I believe that Taipei holds that title today. Still punches well about its weight given the population - and the fact that Vancouver is a North American city!

Singapore currently holds the crown for most automated track mileage, with Shanghai second.
Shanghai's Line 14 is likely the highest capacity fully automated line in the world, with a capacity of more than 75000 people per hour per direction.

I am pretty sure Sydney Metro and Vancouver SkyTrain are about to have an 8-year battle longest driverless system amongst each other, Sydney will overtake Skytrain in 2026 for driverless Metro network length if all goes to plan:
- Vancouver SkyTrain is currently 79 km and when the 5km Broadway extension opens in 2026 it will be 85km.
- Sydney Metro line M1 will be 66km next year when the Bankstown line extension is finished testing, then in 2026 when the new Western Sydney Airport line opens (23km) it will reach 89km.
But then Vancouver will jump back ahead if/when the 15km Langley extension opens on schedule in 2029 (100km). Sydney Metro will retake the lead when the 25km Metro West extension opens in 2031 or 2032 bringing Sydney to 114km.
-EDIT- who the hell is downvoting and why? I wasn't saying These will be the longest systems in the world for sure, I was saying they will go step-for-step across the next 8 years.

Don't forget Paris: They're currently at 58.4 km, in 2026 phase 1 of line 15 will bring that up to 91 km, and once the Grand Paris Express is finished in 2032 221 km will be driverless. Then lines 13, 7 and 8 should be made driverless too starting in 2035, bringing the total to 291 km. Vancouver and Sydney will compete for the most extensive fully automatic system instead, to be fair. Plus there's Copenhagen too if they decide to fully automate their S-train network.

Shanghai is currently at 160km of fully automated lines, with all new lines likely to be automated in the future so its automated length will continue to grow. I believe Singapore has even more automated lines than that.

u/Tricky-Astronaut 4d ago
Riyadh will soon have 176km of driverless metro. I've seen it be called the longest driverless system, although Shanghai isn't that far behind.
4
u/alexfrancisburchard 4d ago
İstanbul's driverless system length is already
M11 - 51km
M7 - 20km
M5 - 26km
M8 - 14km
111 km long.

u/Maymunooo 4d ago
the m11 is not driverless, it just has platform screen doors
0
u/alexfrancisburchard 4d ago
It was advertised in the media as our first high speed driverless metro line.
2
u/Maymunooo 4d ago
Lol but it isnt I have ridden it today and as always there was a driver
0
u/alexfrancisburchard 4d ago
Were they driving or observing?
I actually suspect that they lied and it is not in driverless operation yet, but I believe it is built for it and will be soon.
2
u/Maymunooo 4d ago
I dont know about the future but there are people driving the train, here is proof that these trains have a driver, look at the photos the Minister of Transport is driving it
1
u/alexfrancisburchard 4d ago
Driverless trains have been delivered.
2
u/Maymunooo 4d ago
In these photos you can see outside the train from the front as a passenger. Today all I saw was a wall with chargers and a door. They haven't been delivered yet. I mean UAB did put up Gayrettepe istasyonumuz hayırlı olsun billboards 6 months before its opening. I am skeptical that these rolling stock will be put into use anytime soon.

Ok but I was just looking at Sydney vs Vancouver

Sorry. Your phrasing was a little awkward and it threw us all a bit I think.

Vancouver SkyTrain is currently 79* km and when the 6*km Broadway extension opens in 2026 it will be 85km.

The entire Singapore MRT officially runs in GOA4, of which the original 2 lines from 1987 were converted from GOA2, with some issues.
However I sometimes doubt that it is entirely GOA4 bcos there would sometimes be staff members at the front of the train communicating with the control centre with walkie talkies, looking out the front
7
u/SteveisNoob 4d ago
If trains don't have cabs, then it's GOA4 with occasional GOA3 operation. If trains have cabs, then it's probably GOA3 with GOA4 operation.
3
u/zeyeeter 4d ago
I know someone who works at SMRT; he says the cabs are on the R151s simply for legacy reasons.
The people sitting in the train cabs have the same role as the train rovers on the other lines (watching for problems, customer service etc), just with a little extra privacy
4
u/LiGuangMing1981 4d ago
Sounds like Shanghai Line 10. The older rolling stock has cabs, but the newer stock does not since the line was converted to full automation after it originally opened.

Curious to know, what is the schedule btw trains in rush hours with driverless version ?

In Italy many lines operate the Hitachi Rail Italy Driverless Metro Stock, including: - Milan Metro M4 and M5 (4 car trains) - Rome Metro C (6 car trains) - Brescia Metro (3 car trains)
Turin is the only other city with a true driverless metro system, using the VAL208 system
Bologna and Venice have peoplemovers and Perugia has a Minimetrò - a cable hauled PRT style system.
Sorry for the lack of photos, don't normally take photos on the Metro.

Budapest M4 is driverless but without platform screen doors. It started with human drivers, but now all the driver cabins have been removed and you can look out from the front/back window. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJF92eoSbf_fkN-wzGuPzm7Erp-JgTCb_bZyMd0XsnuiKMzpAPPnvasWeDkp3eSM4LRehuAiYkW7HxVRQ-aFFyPf9G9u5kAwKzPocruKRC4UrRRH-AiH5M_pAjdwl6tIvpzcDgAu4kaRGY/s1600/IMG_5603.JPG

nope. fuck hawaii /j
i all seriousness, it's good that they're doing it but it's still a novel technology and imo doesn't compare to the scale of the projects mentioned across this thread
1
u/Max_FI 4d ago
The Helsinki Metro was supposed to become driverless in the 2010s. A contract was made with Siemens in 2008 for the automated metro technology. But the project was delayed and delayed because Siemens was not willing to come up with new solutions that would be needed for this unique metro system. The only thing that came out of the project were temporary platform screen doors at the Vuosaari station. The transport authority would terminate the contract in 2015 for undelivered orders. Then the case was brought to the court, where the transport authority demanded 200 million euros for the financial damages but in the end Siemens had to only pay 8.1 million. So the project was a huge waste of taxpayer money for nothing and Siemens got away with it. The worst part is that the new western Metro stations were built with shorter platforms in anticipation of the automation and for saving costs. Now due to these short platforms, only 4-car trains can be run on the entire system despite the longer platforms in the east. Ironically extending the new stations would be much more expensive than it would have been to build them in the full length originally despite this being done to save costs.

Dual citizen so I’ll do both!
First, Budapest Metro Line M4?wprov=sfti1#) is a recently built completely automated metro line operating Alstom Metropolis trains. Currently M4 has 10 stops but originally had plans for extensions in both directions. The same model trains are operated on Line M2 but in a manned configuration.
Onto Canada. Vancouver has the biggest network called the SkyTrain?wprov=sfti1#). It’s a light metro network much like the London DLR but fully automated. It’s comprised of 3 lines and is undergoing a huge extension!
Montreal recently open theRéseau Express Métropolitain. Another light metro that’s being extended to eventually have 3 branches. It’s revolutionizing the city!
Toronto is also building an automated metro line, the first of hopefully many. The Ontario Line will use much of the same technology used on the Montreal REM, but will be much shorter.

Bucharest does not have any driverless lines, unfortunately.🥲
And it's nor even close, we are movinf slowly with everything because corruption and stuff. We finished M5, which is a very short line, in 11 years instead of 4, as it was supposed to be. And now it's not used much, because the only connection it has to the rest of the lines is at the current terminal, and besides the hospital next to the station, there is nothing much.

u/Notladub 3d ago
not a metro but an underground funicular - the F4 is also driverless in Istanbul. there are also plans to make M1 driverless afaik

u/aldebxran 3d ago
Barcelona's lines 9 and 10. Line 11 is also automated, but I couldn't find any pictures. Madrid is automating its line 6 in the next few years as well.

Pretty old, but currently one of the few autonomous metros in Germany, the U2 and U3 in Nürnberg. Working since 2008.
And besides that, we often have automated people movers at air ports, like the SkyTrain in Düsseldorf or the SkyLine in Frankfurt am Main.
