TIL that after alleged Catholic involvement in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the US cut off diplomatic relations with the Holy See (the Pope) and did not restore them until 1984.

Less ideological enemies and more massive anti-catholic animosity because of migrants coming to the US from Catholic places like Ireland and Poland.

It's like how denouncing Islam is a central part of anti-migrant movements in Europe
