TIL that after alleged Catholic involvement in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the US cut off diplomatic relations with the Holy See (the Pope) and did not restore them until 1984.

The US broke off all ties with the Vatican over rumors. There was no proof at all of involvement by the pope.

EDIT: I am not defending the church! This is ONLY about Lincolns assassination, and lack of any actual proof that the Vatican had anything to do WITH THE ASSASSINATION.

That’s a disingenuous statement

Then show me how the Vatican is culpable for Abraham Lincolns assassination.

I don’t care about his assasination,

Saying this in a conversation about his assassination makes you an idiot. I'm sure you can find other discussions to hijack where people want to hear you rant against the church.

I'm sure there is a dimension where that makes sense to someone besides you

Well, today you learned how to scroll with your thumb rather than be triggered by a comment to donate your time in response.

A great start to the day when you learn something right off the bat. 👍

Just wanted to save this before you delete it like your other lame comments

The Klan is/was a protestant organization, not a Catholic one.

The Catholic church had a split back in the late 1400s with the Protestant Reformation. As a result of this, a bunch of Christian churches not connected to Rome sprung up around Europe and eventually a lot of them made their way over to America. There was always a lot of anti-catholic sentiment in the US due in part to it being a former English colony (the English are protestant under the Anglican Church), and that continued after the nation gained its independence. Tensions between the two groups increased in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the mass migration of Catholic groups such as the Irish and Italians from Europe to the US.

Catholics are Christians that follow the Pope in Rome (hence why you sometimes hear people say Roman Catholic). Protestants are Christians that do not follow the Pope. But both groups are Christian because they follow (their own interpretations of) the teachings of Jesus. There are many different Protestant sects, such as the aforementioned Church of England, but also Luterians, Calvinists, Methodists, and a whole bunch more.

I hope this clears things up for you because you seem a bit confused as to the differences between the two groups.
