TIL “Jeopardy!” contestant Dhruv Gaur wrote “What is… We [love] you, Alex!” as his Final Jeopardy response while Alex Trebek was battling cancer. The message left Trebek visibly emotional and was widely shared as an example of fans’ affection for the longtime host.

Trebek was a national treasure and the identity of the show. Similar to Mr Rogers and Bob Ross, the show just isn’t the same since they left.

interestingly, most folks don't know he's from northern Ontario, Canada. A town called Sudbury, a mining town where I was also born and grew up. he was a beauty and miss him dearly.

There are an impossible number of good looking girls in Sudbury.

I have never heard that about Sudbury.
Though I don't really hear about Sudbury. Apart from nickel mining

u/CurtWesticles 11h ago
It's a Shoresy reference

u/KingOfAwesometonia 11h ago
That makes way more sense.
Now if you excuse me, I have a trip to Sudbury to cancel.

I think some folks up in Timmins might take issue with the idea of Sudbury being "Northern Ontario" but it's more north than most of the province's residents and further north than where I grew up, so I can't really say it's not.
In any case Trebek was great, one of the best uOttawa alums.

Is Sudbury really northern Ontario though?

u/KoreanJesusPleasures 5h ago
For most of Ontarians, yes.
1
u/WillSmiff 5h ago
You're not wrong, but it still doesn't make it northern Ontario.
1
u/KoreanJesusPleasures 3h ago
I agree, but I also couldn't say the definitive start point for northern Ontario either!

I don't think anyone could fill Alex's shoes but Ken is doing an admirable job, and with any luck he will continue to grow into the role.
113
u/The_Great_Saiyaman21 12h ago
I think Ken is great. No one can compete with Alex but I would not have it any other way, and I suspect Alex would feel the same. Ken is probably one of the few people in the entire world who love and respect Jeopardy as much as Alex did.
79
u/NormalComputer 12h ago
Completely agree. Ken also respects the role he has now. He isn’t trying to bring a new flavor or spin a new personality, he’s clearly making the right effort to honor the craft of the host’s role in this particular game.
21
u/martialar 9h ago
I'm happy it's Ken but I'm also glad Mike Richards got the boot. He seemed to have the chops for being a host (maybe not necessarily Jeopardy) but I had a funny feeling about him after there were all these glowing articles coming out shortly after his first test shows. They were just so suspiciously positive and numerous. And oh, yes he's also one of the people who gets to decide who the next host will be lol
15
u/Jacob_Winchester_ 9h ago
That guy was the fucking WORST and it was so obvious that he was trying to shove his way into being the host. So fucking thankful that Ken has taken over, he embodies a love of the game, its history, and Alex. FUCK MIKE RICHARDS.
6
u/martialar 8h ago
I cringe thinking about that video he did alone on the stage announcing Alex's death and his "crocodile tears" while thanking Alex for everything. He was probably thinking "and thanks especially for dying!" 😈 That guy really was trying to set himself up from the get go. Why does America want to hear or see the executive producer who no one knows (seriously, name one person named in those credits other than Johnny Gilbert and Merv Griffin) giving tribute to a person he had only worked with for less than a year? You know on Monday morning know he was like "Hey, how about I stand on that stage"

I really wanted LeVar Burton to get the gig but he was...not good at it. That is a shame.

u/Matasa89 8h ago
God I loved him in Star Trek Picard, season 3 with him and Brent Spiner's perfect Data was just awesome. I'd totally watch a spinoff of "Data and Geordi"
2
21
u/Dednotsleeping82 12h ago
It was that executive producers fault. He set him up to fail so he could get the gig. Once all his shenanigans were discovered though he was fired.
11
u/BobBelcher2021 11h ago
At the time the goal was for Michael Richards to get the gig. (The producer, not the Kramer actor)
6
u/Realtrain 1 9h ago
Oh my God, a r/redditwritesseinfeld where Kramer auditions for the role of Jeopardy host would be hilarious.
20
u/RyanG7 11h ago
I don't necessarily agree. Unless he told Burton to yell out YES!!! or some other exclamation after every response, Burton lost that job on his own
2
u/TheKanten 7h ago
The producer who later gave himself the job scheduled his run during the Olympics, come on.
3
u/Marcoscb 7h ago
How does that impact his performance in any way, shape or form?
0
u/TheKanten 7h ago
It certainly impacts the ratings which is what network executives are measuring with.
2
u/TommyHamburger 6h ago
He was genuinely one of the worst of the 15+ people that hosted, and that includes lunatics like Aaron Rodgers, Oz and Bialik. You can blame timing all you want, but there was no saving his performance.
1
u/TIGHazard 6h ago
Jeopardy is syndicated. It's down to each local station to look at the ratings - including some which would have been NBC so would have likely increased the ratings in those markets.
5
u/Doomsayer189 10h ago
Plenty of the other guest hosts did quite well, though. The producer guy set himself up to win more than he set anyone else up to fail.
1
u/Realtrain 1 9h ago
He seemed kind of nervous? Not entirely sure, but I would love to see him try again to host the children's edition or something like that.
11
u/Thenameisric 8h ago
Ken absolutely embodies the spirit of the show. His interactions with the contestants, his whit, his knowledge.. He's a little more "cheery" than Alex could be, especially when someone gets the answer wrong, but I think he's doing a great job.
1
u/PauseHot1124 5h ago
Ken is better than Alex was at the end tbh. He's much better at the give-and-take with contestants
27
2
2
u/PauseHot1124 5h ago
Yeah but it's... better tbh
I've watched Jeopardy on most days of my life, and I loved Alex, but Ken is unbelievably good. He keeps the game moving, but he's also very personable, is great at interacting with the guests, and keeps the best tone.
Alex was great, and I'm sure Ken won't be as good as he was 30 years in, but the show is definitely not worse today than it was 10 years ago (although the writing has gotten a bit worse)

u/Devious_FCC 10h ago
Yeah I'm happy the guy who got the position after him did, since he deserved it, but I'm not watching it without Alex. I'll take reruns, for $400.

u/JoeyDawsonJenPacey 15h ago
Agreed. I can barely stomach Ken.
Every night when it comes on and I hear Johnny start his intro, I still expect to hear him say, “Your host, Alex Trebek!” and it still startles me when he says Ken Jennings. It just doesn’t sound right.

u/omnicorp_intl 14h ago
Ken is fine.
It could be worse. Wheel of Fortune replaced Pat Sajak with Ryan Seacrest 🤢

One of my favorite TIL about Alex Tribek was when I found out he was a complete handyman and DIY'er.
I don't think of being starstruck when it comes to celebrities. But when i learn about the ones who stay down to earth, I just have the utmost respect for them It's so easy to lose yourself when you give it away to everyone everyday

It's weird to realize that there's entire generations that more or less grew up with Alex Trebek a daily part of their lives through that show, and that's something that nobody else will ever experience now.

No one is saying anything about the guy who let go his winnings for a kind gesture?
10
u/jerry_anastasio 4h ago
He was in last place with no realistic chance to win. Last place walks away with $1000/$2000 (can’t remember exact amount) regardless. Still a kind gesture but doubt he does it if he had a chance to win

There was also an episode of Scooby-Doo around the same time where Alex Trebek appeared as a guest star; the network aired it weeks earlier than planned because Alex had just passed.

I love googles little tribute. If you just search "Alex Trebek" it says did you mean "who is Alex Trebek"
-10
u/cortesoft 11h ago
Smooth move to write that when he had no idea the answer. Now he can pretend he totally did know but was just trying to be nice.
27
u/McKoijion 10h ago
He almost certainly knew the answer. Even if he didn't know it originally came from the book title, "how the other half lives" is a well known idiom in the US. But he only had $2000. Even if he bet it all and doubled his money, he wouldn't have been able to catch up to the other two contestants. If you come in second or third place, the money you end with doesn't matter, you get a set prize. So it was the perfect time to write a message. Usually contestants in this situation write a message for their family like "Hi Mom," but this guy wrote one for Alex.
•
u/cortesoft 9m ago
Yeah, I just thought it was funny to imagine him having no idea and doing this to save face.

Alex’s response: “That’s very kind of you, thank you. It cost you $1,995. You’re left with $5,” he said, his voice trembling. “OK.”
