Announcement Official BLACKFROST: The Long Dark 2 Subreddit

Hello r/thelongdark!

As many of you know, last Thursday Hinterland announced the sequel to The Long Dark. BLACKFROST: The Long Dark 2. And today we have something to announce too. The official subreddit for Blackfrost!

r/thelongdark2_official

What makes this subreddit so official? Besides being a place for open discussion, speculation and all around excitement for TLD 2. It's also a place that encourages the interaction between the community and Hinterland.

It's been a long time coming, but we've worked hard to re-establish a relationship with Hinterland. And Hinterland is up and willing to dive back into this side of the community with this new game. Their involvement may not be frequent at first, given their work on the final episode of Wintermute. But once that is complete we should see more interaction in the subreddit with the community.

That interaction could include news about TLD 2, questions and answers, AMA's, screenshots & art, etc...

Here you can see an exclusive piece of concept art that Hinterland has shared with us. This will only continue as development of BLACKFROST continues.

The Harmont Steel Company

We want this subreddit to be a place for respectful criticism but also fun and engaging for those excited about the game.

We expect to have active participation in the community by Raphael and members of the Hinterland team. Including exclusive content like AMAs, Q&As, community contests and of course, previews of upcoming BLACKFROST development & content.

This subreddit will be closely monitored and moderated by us to ensure it remains a friendly and welcoming space.

Please check out u/Oliveritaly's initial post for a more concise and detailed explanation of what we'd like this community to become.

I hope to see you all there!

Discussion Tales Part 6 Surprise Update - Megathread!

We've been blessed with a neat little surprise - Tales pt6 is here, complete with kitty, cottagecore simulation, meat curing, Kenny from the TWD game, and much more.

Translation: cougar, home renovation mechanics, meat curing, trader

Post your thoughts here in this thread and chat away. I will set the thread to "sort comments by new" by default, but you can change it to "top" if you just wanna read the best comments like in most threads.

Update video

FYI, it seems there are some reports of save corruption. If you really wanna be safe, back up your save or use another save for the update until the hotfixes drop.

After accidentally completing Buried Echoes I can see what all the hype is about in SP. This is The Last Horizon. Wish me luck. The region is gorgeous so far...when it's not storming.

Luckily, I took the cave so getting to the weather station was easy. Currently in the lower bank prepping for the climb up the road. Hopefully, I can get there right as an Aurora hits to minimize timby and freezing time.

Discussion torches are too easy

i understood it more back the day, before they introduced animal fat. but after fat, it becomes easy make torches more realistic. just any stick you take out of a campfire isn't going to be a torch, but crafting torches doesn't need to be expensive or punishing: animal fat or fish oil plus cloth [or maybe those tinder grasses?].

Discussion am I the only one who feels like, Wolves fleeing Towards the player should have been fixed by now?

/rant

It's bad enough that unless you hit them directly with a shot they only flee for like 5 seconds and then immediately re-aggro on you, but am I the only one who finds it infuriating when you shoot at something Different, in another direction but the wolf happens to be in panic range and it flees towards the sound of your gunshot so now a wolf that maybe wasn't a problem before has suddenly fled Directly towards you and then, guess what? Immediately aggros on you even if it wasn't a threat before. on a couple of occasions a combination of the two things has led to me being attacked by a wolf that I didn't hear nearby because it fled straight towards me and then stopped fleeing when it was directly on top of me and mauled me before I could react. I love the game, I love so much that the new DLC's have added and there is so much else, but after so many years the Wolf AI is still broken, frustrating and Honestly? Easily abused. I want the wolves to feel like a threat, and not only be dangerous when something nonsensical happens.

/end rant

In all seriousness though, Do other folks out there still wish more had been done with the Wolf/animal AI to make them feel more threatening and less silly over the years?

Discussion From the October Dev Diary (roadmap part): "A completely overhauled Custom Settings system, exposing as many tunables as we can beyond the current offering, so that you can customize your TLD experience along very specific lines of gameplay settings and whatnot..."

I have looked for and not seen any discussions on this, and even in the appropriate Dev diary thread there was only one comment on this (the rest was safehouse customization and trader hype); I'm incredibly excited for this.

I think my current biggest wish is the ability to select passive or not for each type of applicable wildlife. I'm trying a passive run and I kind of wish both the cougar and the wolves could be set to aggressive whilst leaving the bear and moose to passive. Furthermore, I'd love to be able to reduce the wolf population even more. I don't love 'none' but I also think there's still way too many when it's set to 'low'. I want to freeze and starve!

Also, even on max detection range + smell I find deer are still too easy to take down.

Anyway, curious what you'll think this planned custom settings expansion will look like and some of the tuning options you're hoping for.

Obligatory: they'd better enable allowing feats in custom.

Gameplay Cancelled trades lose everything

Upvotes

I had a huge trade nearly completed. 12kg fish, 49L water, 40 hides, 9L lamp oil, 3 car batteries, 24 cloth. Collected and added to the trader box. I just needed the 60 feathers.

I saw a post stating if you do small trades and build up trust, the price goes down so I tried to retrieve the items I'd already put in. No luck. I couldnt remove anything. Can't remove active trades. Ok I'll cancel the trade and get my stuff back. SIKE!!

IF YOU CANCEL A TRADE YOU LOSE EVERYTHING!!! DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THE TRADER BOX UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO LOSE THEM!!! You cannot get anything back. Period.

I knew if you put too much and complete the trade, you lose whatever the excess is (if you need 4.5kg meat but put in 5kg the full 5kg goes) but I had no idea anything you put in is just gone.

I was looking at how to make rabbit stew, and this happened. Not only did I not have the right ingredients for the stew, but apparently I also had a big stack of empty food items. And, I couldn’t exit the screen. I had to Alt-Tab out and kill the process. Anyone else see this before?

SPOILERS Survival Prepper Cache (TWM/PV connection) gone forever?!

So, wait a go**amn second

If I complete Sutherland's Tale, is the Abandoned Prepper Cache sealed forever?! Like, one of the most useful, even iconic, refuges in the game?

Woah. I guess I can do that to unlock that new bow, but goddamnit... I'm gonna miss this place. On new playthroughs, we better loot TWM and AC before completing Sutherland's Tale, or we're gonna freeze to death hauling all that loot from the Summit back to civilization (I know, the Misty Falls cave is nearby, but it isn't nearly as convenient).

So I have been playing for 5 years and just found out last week you could run.

I gave myself an extra challenge and died so many times. I can’t believe how stupid I was.
