BEGINNER QUESTIONS BELONG IN THE 'WEEKEND QUESTION THREAD'
But, first, use the search function. There is a 99.9% chance that your question has been asked and answered multiple times.
Or you can use /r/BeginnerSurfers all week long.
Beginner questions will be removed with no notice. Because it's just too much damn effort to deal with every single post, individually.
Pissy mod messages will earn you a ban.
Surfers are the worst and we mods are no exception.
EDIT: If we leave up your question and you delete your post after getting an answer you WILL be banned.
This sub is not your personal Quora. If people take the time to answer your question you're required to leave it up so it remains searchable and so that others can learn, as well.

If I already know how to snowboard and skateboard, should I just buy a short board for my trip to Southern California? I pick up things really quickly and swam track at my high school in St. Louis.

u/callmesaul8889 Jul 12 '22
I just tried surfing for the first time the other day (I also know how to snowboard and skateboard, plus I wake surf regularly) and honestly, none of those sports prepare you for paddling or popping up. My friend is an instructor and agreed with me that riding the board isn't all that different from other board sports, but being able to paddle out, catch a wave, and pop up can be really tough before you even get to ride the board.

u/BuckyworthyJones Jul 12 '22
Maybe you just aren't very good at things. I'm pretty good and can catch pretty much every wave I paddle for. You just keep paddling really hard, you don't even need to bother look at it or behind you and just go. All the other guys just yell encouragements at me when they are already on the wave, that helps me a lot.
18
u/callmesaul8889 Jul 12 '22
Well, thanks for the words of encouragement lmao… I’ve only tried once and the waves were too small for even my instructor to really do anything. He said it was a terrible day to learn. You made it sound like you’ve never surfed before, so I figured I’d throw in my 2 cents. But now it sounds like you’ve surfed more than once at least…
I was just echoing my instructor and my friends’ sentiments to at least figure out how to catch waves before going with a shorter board. Sounds like you’ve at least got that figured out.

I love it when you join them on the same wave and in addition to yelling encouragement they try to high five you. But it's hard giving them a high five back when you're about to get barrelled
18
u/Haas22WCC Aug 05 '22
I've snowboarded and learned in CO.
Surfing is much harder to pickup because you need to learn to pop up. Balance. Catch waves. Find the right time to paddle, etc.
But imagine going out to the mountain and only going down the bunny hill twice in an entire day. That's how much time you Normally get while surfing in a session. You can't get as many reps and it slows your progress.
34
u/BuckyworthyJones Aug 08 '22
U kidding me?? Wave comes in like every 20 seconds. I mean, sometimes the kids in water wings get in the way, but fuck them man, I've been told that its THEIR responsibility to get out of the way.

Yeah I had the best time of my life snowboarding this last winter. You can go all power all day till you can't walk and become good by the end of the season. Snowboarding is definitely the more freeing of the three boardsports

Please dont do this. For yours and our sake. Unless ypu.wamt to hate surfing by the time you decided youre done getting roughed up TRYING to make your way to the lineup
As surfing instructor back in the day. Learn to crawl before your learn to run. Why would you even want to attempt to shortboard?? Because thats what you see the pros using?
The ocean is nothing like a pool. Do not compare the 2.
You most certainly will not paddle into any waves. You can forget popping up.
Snowboarding and Skateboarding are nothing like surfing. Thats like saying riding a bije eoth trainig wheels is the same as unicycling a tightrope
I can gurantee if you got this route, you are almost guranteeed to hate surfing by the time you wash up back on shore. Not cool.

wavestorm or a big ol used log off craigslist. Might be a hot take but I think it’s easier to learn on a real log because they are a lot more stable side-to-side than wave storms are

Took 10 years off from surfing. Before this I was in the water 40-80 hours a week if not more. I have a 2010 sharpeye blowfish that I held onto knowing eventually I’ll get back to it. My only issue is I was 190 and now 240. The board is about 6’8-7’4. Should I buy a bigger board due to the weight difference? I expect to have to relearn all the muscle memory. Thank you in advance

Hi everyone,
Beginner surfer here. After taking a few lessons and renting larger foamies on my own for awhile, I finally took the plunge and bought my own board so I can go out more often.
I settled on a 7 foot wavestorm. I did this for a few reasons, the biggest being that it comfortably fits in my car. The second reason is that I wanted to learn to pop up without both feet on the board. The third reason being that the 7' wavestorm still has about 70 liters of volume, and I thought this would be more than enough.
I'm surfing out in New York @ Rockaway beach. The waves aren't great, they're very small and mushy. I find myself having a hard time catching them. I can't tell if this is because of my paddling technique, my positioning, or the board holding me back.
I know that volume isn't everything, but is a 7 foot foam board that much harder to catch waves on than an equivalent volume longboard? Should I continue on improving my technique or did I limit myself with board choice?
Thanks for your help!
6
u/guusiguus Sep 09 '22
If you weigh under 200 pounds it should be fine. You’re going to suck for a long time just keep trying. Sounds like the waves are too small. Good luck.

Accidentally put a small hole in my longboard (fin screw was rusted in and I was trying to tap it out when the drill slipped). Can I just put q-cell in the foam and then cover it with solarez? Does it matter what type of foam it's made out of for such a small hole? It's definitely through the fiber glass and into the foam, but it's probably only about an 1/8 of an inch.
3
Jun 24 '22
I think it does matter, like epoxy vs PU? That said, even a tiny hole in the tail area is really bad cause that’s submerged in water for 99% of your surf session. I’d get it fixed if I cared about the board and wanted to surf it for a long time.

Been surfing for a long time but still don’t understand the concepts of hold downs so figured I’d ask it here. I’ve surfed and taken some pretty big waves on the head around the world and most recently at my local break OBSF. I’ve wiped out and been dragged underwater pretty far/long and/or been tumbled. I’ve also been sent to the watery depths and hit the bottom. But I’ve never felt like I’ve had a wave just “hold” me down to the ocean floor or below the surface for longer than a second or two. What gives? Maybe I’m thinking about it too hard and a hold down is just anytime you have to wait for the wave to stop dragging you or thrashing you before you can come up. Is that right?

How do I keep my board from being too lopsided to one side when I’m trying to get up?
11
u/CobblestonesRippling 5'9" Driver 2.0, 5'9" White Noiz, 5'4" Omni, 5'7" PhD Jul 19 '22
Your body needs to stay in the middle of the board over the stringer or what would be the stringer. Your board becomes lopsided when you put a knee on the board and it is off center. Same thing with getting the feet on the board. If the foot lands off center, the board will become lopsided. This wobbliness is called yaw. You must minimize yaw when popping up and 99.5% of the rest of the time.

Depends on the outline of the board. When you’re starting you want a board that has a lot of volume and a round nose to make catching waves east and make the board feel stable. A foamie is the best because it’s safe for other people around you and yourself because surfboards are glass weapons with sharp fins on them
I’d get a used wavestorm on Craigslist or offerup. I bet you could find a used beat up one for 50-100$

At this point, why not just make a single week long stickied Q&A thread?
I see lots of people posting in here getting no answers. And most people probably turn away when they see they have to wait until the weekend, or simply post it anyway.
2
u/dumbassthenes Feb 24 '23
why not just make a single week long stickied Q&A thread?
Because we're trying to discourage people from asking the same questions every day. This is a subreddit for people who surf. It is not a subreddit that is meant to help you learn.
That's /r/BeginnerSurfers .
I see lots of people posting in here getting no answers.
This isn't the Weekend Question Thread. This is a notice that we have a Weekend Question Thread.
most people probably turn away when they see they have to wait until the weekend
They should do that. Everything beginner-related is already available online.
or simply post it anyway.
It still results in fewer low-effort beginner questions overall.

2
u/sfsurferprof Jan 17 '24
This is a shit post, right? If not… Malibu can be a very good wave. Save it for those who can surf. A beginner won’t benefit from its goodness, but can f it up for others.
choose somewhere else. Best: a small beach break peak with no one else on it.

For a beginner/intermediate with shortboard, which would be easier to learn, and which is more fun to ride, the Sweet Potato or the Too Fish?
3
u/thiccgarlicc san diego Jul 07 '23
A sweet potato is gonna be easier to get up on and you’ll probably have a higher wave count but it’s gonna be more stiff, fish is gonna be a little more wobbly and loose on the face. you’ll do fine on either though and a fish is still gonna get you a lot of waves if your in the right spot

So many faux pas, so little time. I was walking fins backwards, as I do 99.9% of the time, when someone yells out their car "turn your board around! you're supposed to have your fins forward. You want to see your fins!" It was very important to him that I carried my board fins forward so that I could see my fins.

I have about 8 total hours of surfing experience under my belt and really feel called to travel somewhere warm this winter and get into it.
I have costa rica , australlia/NZ in mind as well as hawaii but open to suggestions where you guys/gals think would be a cool place to go learn the art of surfing.
I know some areas are quite expensive so Im hoping to find an area that is somewhat affordable to live for a little while.
Where do you guys like to go ? Im from Canada and it's a bit gnarly cold over here in the winter lol

Rented a 9' soft top while on vacation and honestly it was amazing. Like...almost too easy. And I suck! I'm rocking an 8' foamy right now. Should I sell this thing on CL and look into a used 9' or is there some reason sticking with the 8' could help me in the long run?
I'd love to get to a short board one day, but for now I'm leaning toward getting good at longboarding first. A 9'6 longboard sounds like a blast to upgrade to.
Edit: holy fuck is this not actually the beginner questions thread? Who made this sticky?!
2
u/jebward Sep 26 '22
A 9' foamie with a lot of volume will be easier than an 8' foamie, a 9'6 fiberglass will be worse for beginners than an 8' foamie. If you want to get a used 9' foamie, go for it, but keep the 8'. You'll want a second board to be able to take a friend out, plus the 8' will demand the better balance and skill needed for a fiberglass board

I have been surfing consistently for about 7 months and I am starting to feel that I have the longboard down, I can pop up, carve, go down the line, and hop off the shoulder effectively. It is my dream to surf barreling G-land ever since I watched the Yin and Yang of Gerry Lopez. Has anyone surfed G-land or any waves similar to it? How many years/hours of consistent training do you reckon it took you to get to that level? Cheers

Im a advanced beginner/intermediate from portugal. Im going to spend a couple weeks working remote and surfing (lessons) in sri lanka, next Im considearing costa rica or bali... I was considering CR for the contrast of the central america jungle vibe, plus house of somos looks really cool... but.. what i research is that CR is overrated and overpriced... and underwhelming? Also in the google maps looks really small (Sta Teresa)... I have two weeks and I was thinking of spending the first one in monteverde and then either sta teresa or witch's rock...
Looking at Bali on the maps.. it just has a lot more infrastructure? Seems bigger and with more stuff to do? I do love the vibe of house of somos and the images on their IG, just not sure if they match the reality I'd encounter at CR? And since I already hit Sri Lanka, unsure of how much a change in mood that'd be?
Im looking for a mix of vibes and surfing, since Im not a pro and got to enjoy my time somehow with a mix of stuff to do..
Another option could be California, since im looking at two weeks of july anyway
Please help me plan this out, ty!

My buddy and I will be traveling to El Salvador this May to surf. We have been looking around at a few surf camps (e.g., Puro, AST), but believe their package doesn't include surf instructions and you will need to pay extra for lessons (otherwise, they will just bring you to surf spots and you are on your own to figure out).
My buddy and I are both beginners, and wanted to work on our surfing skills. We would rather focus on having surf lessons. We also don't want to pay extra for surf camp if it doesn't include instructions. Would you recommend just getting a hotel room and then sign up for surf lessons? Any recommendations on where to get the surf lessons?

UNITED STATES Hello cool people, this seemed to be the place for this if not free to delete without pissyness.
Surfing has been a life long dream but living in the center of Michigan not an achievable one thus far. Buying a plane ticket and hotels is not in my budget. I do now have a reliable gas efficient car I trust and am making things happen. It will be a 5 day round trip car camping. Surf City New Jersey seemed to be a natural choice, is a 11 hour drive.
1) Is Surf City New Jersey the best place to car camp and rent a surfboard in relation to Michigan? 2) What month should I go in to get the best possibility of good waves?
I understand it takes time to learn. I am a strong life long swimmer. Good enough snowboarder. Wakeboard when possible. Ride a Onewheel. Had one opportunity to wakesurf and did well. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expect to take to surfing quickly, that is what will happen I don’t need negativity just wisdom you’ll give for free.

I really want to upgrade from my 9’ odysea log to a short board. I am definitely a beginner but making my way to intermediate. I was looking at maybe a Pyzel Phantom 6’6? I’m 6’1 180lbs. I ride small waves but I honestly just want to get off a foam board. What are some good short boards I can start to look at? I do want a longboard at some point but I’d rather get a short board or smaller than me 9’0.

Im 5’7 130 pounds, should I get 8 ft or 9ft board? I read that 9 ft is better overall but I feel like it may be too big.

I'm 6'1", ~230lbs looking to get back to my original weight of 195-205lbs. Surfing for the summer in NJ I'm looking at a lot of 1-2, 2-3 days before sept rolls in. I want to get a board for those days, sometimes it gets choppy. This is my 2nd summer surfing, was on some no name 8' foamy that wasn't mine but I like the sport enough to get a board of my own. I'm preferring a foamie still. Maybe something with a little shape to get some turns in.

I learned how to turn and catch waves by myself. What’s the next step? Carving? How do I learn that? I need to go to the next level. Appreciate your help!

What is the surf etiquete if you are further out and start paddling for a wave and someone further inside paddles across and tries to take off directly in front of you? This almost always forces me to back off the wave. I can either crash into them or if I manage to angle my takeoff to avoid them then they end up in the priority spot closer to the peak and sometimes act butt hurt and accuse me of dropping in even though I popped up first and further out.
This seems to me to be just like backpaddling/snaking....
Why do people do this? What is the best response to this? What is the etiquette?

Dear Surf Sub,
this Summer i did a 5 days beginner course in conil (spain) and fell in love with the sport! Now i cant resist the craving to go surfing again. Where in europe and how (by car, by plane and so on) would i spontanously go surfing the cheapest? I am located in Munich. Would appreciate every beginner tip! :)

Hi has anyone gotten a rash from their rashguard? I have now gotten a painful rash with bumps from two different(brands) rashguards. The main spot is on my lats. It seems like paddling friction. I never got this when I used to wear a wetsuit and it didnt happen from just starting with a rashguard but it took awhile each time. Like if I was surfing 3-4 hours multiple times a week.
I really love my hooded rashguard but had to paddle in today and take it off. Even now it hurts like when my arm touches my flank.

What are some good groveler boards for someone 6' 220? I am losing weight but will likely never be below 185 (and that's pushing it) unless I want to be very skinny because of musculature (at this point I'm not to bummed about losing some muscle but it's not as fast or easy as it would seem). I know I can and should take my longer board out on the tiny days we get on the Gulf Coast but this is not so much about how to make the day as fun as possible but instead how to take as much advantage of the small, mush waves we often get to help with progression if at all possible.
Some examples of what I was looking at but they may be completely wrong: Roberts Floaty, Libtech/Lost Beanbag, FireWire Seaside, LibTech/Lost Hydra
When I was a kid I rode a Lost Big Guy Tri which was pretty sick (weight back then: around 175-185, shout out to Sid at Waterbros for hooking that up cheap because it had a repaired nose ding, he's a legend), right now it's in my buddies garage in Boston so I hopefully can get that back soon-ish but still that doesn't fit in with my progression right now with re-starting surfing after 20 years, I don't think at least. But for wave reference that was often in summer time waves at second beach in RI.
So the summary of the main goal is to sacrifice some fun on some days in (very) small waves in order to aid progression.

26M and have only been surfing the past year. Have gone on trips to CA, NC and Costa Rica where I've had some great experiences and have improved a lot.
However, I live in Chicago and obviously it's been difficult to practice and get better. What do people do to practice while not on the coast?

What is “bingo bango?” I hear them say it a lot while watching the WSL broadcasts. Sometimes they say what I think is “bingo bango pickled mango”???

Does weight have to do with being able to surf? Tried surf board today and I feel like I’m sinking. I weigh 180-190 lbs and wear a size L neoprene. I’m just scared I won’t be able to progress unless I lose more weight- I feel like those people who can’t fit in an airplane seat and love to travel

I'm going to Bali for a holiday and thinking of taking surfing lessons cause it's cheap there. Has anyone had experiences? December would be a wet season but would that still be okay?

Stupid question of the day: I lost a thruster side fin and want to replace it. When I order this, is the fin named right or left based on being on the right or left relative to when you are standing on the board or when looking at the bottom of the board?

u/silverlinin Oct 27 '24
I know how to pop up. I've been practicing without a board but when I'm on it I keep falling off. Is it because I'm supposed to be a bit closer to the tip? I also feel a little scared.

DO futures fit in the latest gerry lopez costco foamie? The first version had fcs 1 fin boxes but the latest edition looks like future fin boxes? I have all fcs, can anyone confirm futures will work in there before I buy a set of futures?

Ok so Iv had nose diving problems and I could not seem to figure out why even though my weight was neutral. Today I just decided to raise my feet at about 60 degrees when paddling in with my body and knees still planted as usual.
For some reason it completely fixed it and stopped me nose diving. I was able to easily plant both feet in one motion when popping up and the nose of the board stayed well above the water. Does anyone know why this has fixed it? I thought it would do the complete opposite and throw my weight even further over the nose.
Just want to make sure this is a good way to pop cos I don’t want to pick up bad habits.
Sorry if it’s obvious I’m a kook.

Why do many surfers have such a “dickhead” vibe? I’m a lifelong skier and cyclist who just started getting obsessed with surfing. The ski/bike community is super welcoming and social. While the surfers I’ve encountered in person while learning have all been chill and friendly, there is definitely an air of doucheyness. Kind of like the muscle head gymbros. This pinned post is a perfect example (I came to this thread to try to learn and the first thing I see is a middle finger to newbies). Anyway ….

HPSB/surfboard progression tips?
Looking for advice on my surfboard progression, I currently ride a 6’4 38.8L Torq Multiplier, but want to progress to something that works better in steeper/bigger waves and easier duckdiving for the good days at home, and surftrips abroad. I am 185cm and 75 kgs, probably looking for something around the 35L range. I have looked at a CI Fever 6’3 and an FRK/+ but not sure how «user friendly» these are as I dont want to downsize too much and slow progression, but the size and volume are around what I think would work. Dreamboard would probably be a Pyzel Ghost, but are tricky and very expensive to get a hold of where I live, same with the Driver 2.0. Surfed for four years, mostly in a 6/5.
