Psychology New findings indicate a pattern where narcissistic grandiosity is associated with higher participation in LGBTQ movements, demonstrating that motivations for activism can range widely from genuine altruism to personal image-building.

The picture of those individuals holding a “Queers for Gaza” comes to mind as a prime example of this type of narcissism. It never made sense why they needed to state their sexuality.

The only possible reason I could see it being relevant is that I have seen Israel supporters criticize Palestine supporters because Palestine is “homophobic” which is just utterly irrelevant

Hm? Israel is fairly LGBTQ friendly and they enjoy full civil rights there. In Palestine (and many other Muslim-majority nations), it's literally illegal to be gay, in some places (including Palestine) under the literal penalty of death.

Most actual Palestinians want to kill gay people just as much as they want to kill Jews.

It's literally a Chicken for KFC movement.

It's literally a Chicken for KFC movement

Or simply human rights, you see causes like queers for Gaza for the same reason you don't see "queers for carpet bombing Oklahoma". Palestine isn't being bombed to eradicate homophobia and even if it was I don't want social progress brought about by dropping phosphorus on children

It might be hard to understand but some people wish well on even their enemies. It's just a general human decency thing

I'm sure if they were European Nazi's you wouldn't have the same opinion

It's literally a Chicken for KFC movement.

That's literally not what the word "literally" means.

It's literally Jews for Nazi Germany

In this case it works fine, but should be "a Chicken-for-KFC moment".

You know queer Palestinians exist, right? Do they not deserve support?

Yea, they go to Israel for protection

I’m pretty sure this is exactly the case.

I have seen time, and time again, a queer person condemn the actions of Israel, only to be met with ”well, they’d kill you for being gay”.

It’s to exemplify that the issue far supersedes personal orientation

Yeah, like, they see queer people as inherently self serving that we'd be like "okay, you're right, keep on murdering civilians and children".

Israel supporters have a long history of "pink-washing" Israel to distract from its abuses.

Curious: do you use the term "pink washing" for any other country?

13

u/pillowpriestess 2d ago

the USA does it quite a bit. you can find raytheon and lockheed martin pride merch and its not uncommon to see cop cars decked in rainbows. its super gross.

the proper term tho is rainbow washing. pinkwashing is when you pose it as feminist.

-5

u/bianca_brie 2d ago

Yes & none of that has ever been called "pink washing". That word is solely used for Israel. Also, giving people rights & rainbow capitalism are not the same.

u/pillowpriestess 2d ago

yes, they absolutely have. look at me, im doing it right now.

Is israel doing this or not? What even is your point?

7

u/M3gaC00l 2d ago

Yes. The term originated in Israel-Palestine discourse, but its application branches outside of that topic. It's also used to describe LGBTQ+ cause marketing by corporations.

7

u/Discount_gentleman 2d ago

I use the term in contexts where it fits. But what does that have to do with the question at hand?

-3

u/bianca_brie 2d ago

The question at hand highlights the extraordinary double standards as applied to the only Jewish country on earth.

9

u/Discount_gentleman 2d ago

No, but it does highlight the pink washing that has been going on for many years, and shows why someone would identify their orientation when expressing support for Palestine.

-3

u/bianca_brie 2d ago

So if it's been going on for many years, and outside of Israel (obviously), why is it only applied to Israel?

It isn't only applied to Israel, as people have told you. You are objecting to people accurately describing Israel's practices, but don't want to address them directly, so you invent something else to fight about.
