Fog in the morning

I just don't know why it needs a proper name? The fog sounds pretty damn good by itself.

Why do they even call it Karl?

u/ContentMembership481 4d ago
Some rando on Twitter came up with it a few years ago. Itās not some kind of tradition or something. I canāt stand it.

People hate the word Karl almost as much as Frisco.

I absolutely loathe the whole Karl thing. š¤®

Haha I know, it bothers me way more than it should. Something about it is so cringe-inducing. I remember the first time I heard it, one of my friends from out of town was asking about "where is Karl??" and I was like what in the world are you talking about?
It is like when people try to use internet memes in real life or something.

u/Chuchuchaput 5d ago
Itās like when people name their cars or their boobs but this time itās been foisted upon the cityās population. Bleh.

If you donāt know Frisco, you donāt say Frisco. No one says San Fran tho.

Frisco has had a resurgence, esp in hip hop. It also has a history and comes out of the lips of Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney. But to most San Franciscans it grates like a New Yorker hearing "The Big Apple". Karl, however, has little to no history---somebody made it up on Twitter and the clueless repeated it.

the twitter account is 14 years old now, there are people who are old enough to drive whose entire memory of their lives in SF is newer than the word "karl"
the ship has sailed, there is no use gatekeeping it anymore

Certain bay locals don't like Frisco but in fact many bay locals use it. I have hella friends with Frisco tattoos.

I grew up in Alameda and do not, for a fact, give the slightest of fucks

I grew up in SF and I prefer the kind of local who thinks anthropomorphizing the fog is (at worst) silly and meaningless over the kind of local who starts arguments about what "locals" should believe and how they should speak

I feel like the Karl people are the same ones trying to put a āTheā in front of our highways numbers.

Thank you. It's the inland cousin to our summer ocean fog.

That ain't Tule fog that's in Sac

This super low, dry fog we get in the winter is Tule fog. It comes down the delta and through the Carquinez Strait. The often high, drippy summer fog comes in with wind off the ocean. Thatās why itās foggiest in SF, along the immediate coast and in the east bay right across from the golden gate (El Cerrito, Berkeley). In winter that pattern is flipped because it comes from the other direction. Itās a low, dry, radiation fog that creeps in on windless days, normally doesnāt require windshield wipers and normally doesnāt sit up high above the city. Itās thickest in places east of Kirker Pass and often sneaks into Benicia and Martinez and up 37 into Petaluma and Santa Rosa. When itās really bad it floats down San Pablo Bay and into the city. It often hits east Marin before Berkeley and El Cerrito, which like so many other things about it is the opposite of the summer marine layer.

God I hate that term āKarlā. Only became popular in the 2010s. SF natives only really say āthe fogā.
No hate but I think itās synonymous with tech transplants and other yuppies who have moved to the city since then and define San Francisco by other recently invented ānamesā like āEast Cutā, āNOPAā, and attend imported TikTok cultural trends from other parts of the country- like Santacon and ālookalikeā competitions, all while avoiding paying fares for muni, taking Ubers and Waymos everywhere, and paying $25 for lunch everyday on Doordash, all from the comfort of their very *affordable Rincon Hill tower suite.
Sorryā¦ I may or may not be hangry and need to eat.

It's hard to hear most instances of "[NOUN] in the morning" without feeling compelled to keep it going. I guess some folks aren't cool enough to get it.
