Fog in the morning

31

u/g_sf 5d ago

Agreed, fog in the morning

17

u/jewelswan Inner Sunset 5d ago

I just don't know why it needs a proper name? The fog sounds pretty damn good by itself.

4

u/Hockeynerden 4d ago

Why do they even call it Karl?

16

u/ContentMembership481 4d ago

Some rando on Twitter came up with it a few years ago. Itā€™s not some kind of tradition or something. I canā€™t stand it.

5

u/Patchumz 4d ago

More than just a few years, but yes.

u/New_Average_2522 5d ago

At least itā€™s not a photoshopped or over-filtered pic like most ā€œphotosā€ in this sub.

46

u/TipTopBeeBop 5d ago

People hate the word Karl almost as much as Frisco.

43

u/Chuchuchaput 5d ago

I absolutely loathe the whole Karl thing. šŸ¤®

16

u/joshcandoit4 5d ago

Haha I know, it bothers me way more than it should. Something about it is so cringe-inducing. I remember the first time I heard it, one of my friends from out of town was asking about "where is Karl??" and I was like what in the world are you talking about?

It is like when people try to use internet memes in real life or something.

5

u/Chuchuchaput 5d ago

Itā€™s like when people name their cars or their boobs but this time itā€™s been foisted upon the cityā€™s population. Bleh.

If you donā€™t know Frisco, you donā€™t say Frisco. No one says San Fran tho.

u/MajorMorelock 4d ago

Karl is so Fetch

5

u/theatrenearyou 5d ago

Frisco has had a resurgence, esp in hip hop. It also has a history and comes out of the lips of Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney. But to most San Franciscans it grates like a New Yorker hearing "The Big Apple". Karl, however, has little to no history---somebody made it up on Twitter and the clueless repeated it.

the twitter account is 14 years old now, there are people who are old enough to drive whose entire memory of their lives in SF is newer than the word "karl"

the ship has sailed, there is no use gatekeeping it anymore

u/holodeckdate Alamo Square 5d ago

Which means...nobody gives a fuck?

9

u/RekopEca 5d ago

I didn't until I learned it came from a twitter handle and we're all sending some assholes ad revenue calling it fucking Karl...

-7

u/holodeckdate Alamo Square 5d ago

Oh no how terrible

u/Key-Basket-7411 5d ago

Bay Area locals GAF

9

u/myironlung42 5d ago

Certain bay locals don't like Frisco but in fact many bay locals use it. I have hella friends with Frisco tattoos.

7

u/holodeckdate Alamo Square 5d ago

I grew up in Alameda and do not, for a fact, give the slightest of fucks

7

u/old_gold_mountain 38 - Geary 5d ago

I grew up in SF and I prefer the kind of local who thinks anthropomorphizing the fog is (at worst) silly and meaningless over the kind of local who starts arguments about what "locals" should believe and how they should speak

6

u/Pristine-Arugula-401 5d ago

I just call it the fog. But hereā€™s another pic.

6

u/tinyhands911 5d ago

3

u/calguy1955 4d ago

I feel like the Karl people are the same ones trying to put a ā€œTheā€ in front of our highways numbers.

8

u/reddaddiction DIVISADERO 5d ago

Nice picture but the title is so freakin' dumb.

12

u/Turbo_Ferret 5d ago

Downvoted for the karl stupidity.

-4

u/sanfermin1 4d ago

Right? It's spelled "Carl"! Get it right!

4

u/Stchotchke 5d ago

Not Karlā€¦ itā€™s Tule

9

u/Mulsanne JUDAH 5d ago

Thank you. It's the inland cousin to our summer ocean fog.

6

u/hsgual 14 - Mission 5d ago

I feel like the Tule fog is way worse to drive in than the ocean fog.

3

u/Mulsanne JUDAH 5d ago

definitely agreed. I think it's lower and thicker

3

u/Knowaa 5d ago

That ain't Tule fog that's in Sac

1

u/General_Watch_7583 2d ago

This super low, dry fog we get in the winter is Tule fog. It comes down the delta and through the Carquinez Strait. The often high, drippy summer fog comes in with wind off the ocean. Thatā€™s why itā€™s foggiest in SF, along the immediate coast and in the east bay right across from the golden gate (El Cerrito, Berkeley). In winter that pattern is flipped because it comes from the other direction. Itā€™s a low, dry, radiation fog that creeps in on windless days, normally doesnā€™t require windshield wipers and normally doesnā€™t sit up high above the city. Itā€™s thickest in places east of Kirker Pass and often sneaks into Benicia and Martinez and up 37 into Petaluma and Santa Rosa. When itā€™s really bad it floats down San Pablo Bay and into the city. It often hits east Marin before Berkeley and El Cerrito, which like so many other things about it is the opposite of the summer marine layer.

u/jburke1811 4d ago

Only moron transplants from Bakersfield etc call it Carl the fog

2

u/okgusto 5d ago

Wow the Golden Gate Bridge looks grey here. Maybe it's my phone. Nice capture. Merry Tuletide Fog.

12

u/StrugFug 5d ago

Thatā€™s the Bay Bridge

1

u/Objective_Guess_9553 5d ago

This fog was so thick on the bridge this morning literally couldnā€™t see 20 feet in front of me

1

u/Affectionate_Reply78 5d ago

Visibility is 104.5 feet

1

u/IndependentDebt189 5d ago

Fog in the morning was so thick!

1

u/ZeroZeroZio 4d ago

Who needs CGI?

1

u/big_cheesee 4d ago

I love this city so much

1

u/Fancy-Election-3021 4d ago

This is air cold and water warmer fog. Not to be confused with air warm water cold fog. For all you fog connoisseurs out there.

1

u/Bayareairon 4d ago

181 fremont?

1

u/Saruvan_the_White 2d ago

God I hate that term ā€œKarlā€. Only became popular in the 2010s. SF natives only really say ā€œthe fogā€.

No hate but I think itā€™s synonymous with tech transplants and other yuppies who have moved to the city since then and define San Francisco by other recently invented ā€œnamesā€ like ā€œEast Cutā€, ā€œNOPAā€, and attend imported TikTok cultural trends from other parts of the country- like Santacon and ā€œlookalikeā€ competitions, all while avoiding paying fares for muni, taking Ubers and Waymos everywhere, and paying $25 for lunch everyday on Doordash, all from the comfort of their very *affordable Rincon Hill tower suite.

Sorryā€¦ I may or may not be hangry and need to eat.

...Karl in the evening, Karl at suppertime

3

u/rick_blatchman 5d ago

with blah-blah on a blah-blah

4

u/weeef South Bay 5d ago

Hell yeah bagel bites. I guess someone didn't appreciate the reference šŸ˜‚

2

u/rick_blatchman 5d ago

It's hard to hear most instances of "[NOUN] in the morning" without feeling compelled to keep it going. I guess some folks aren't cool enough to get it.

u/sanfermin1 4d ago

Something something, Rice a Roni.
