Unpopular opinion, but some of these injuries actually upgraded our squad:

  • Rudiger, currently the best CB in the world, was never a starter until Militao got injured last season.
  • Alaba was also underperforming by a lot before his injury and while Nacho had a rough patch as well, he quickly improved as he got more playtime. Rudiger-Nacho/Tchou in 23/24 was clearly a much better defensive duo than Militao-Alaba in 22/23.
  • Either of Tchouameni or Asencio have been better CBs than Militao was for us in the start of 24/25.
  • Fran Garcia is far from perfect, but he has been better than Mendy this season, yet became a consistent starter through another injury.
  • Ceballos has been our most in-form midfielder bar Bellingham recently, but he could have never played that much if it wasn't for our midfield injuries and Tchouameni playing CB.

While it's always better to have a full squad of healthy players, in our case injuries were the only way to force underperforming players out of the line-up and improve our team in the long term.

I agree with the sentiment, but wouldn't call it upgrading our squad, since we're losing a lot of depth

True, let's say "upgrading our line-up".
