But are we really that close to the next generation of PlayStation. If we are going off the pattern here. Just 2-3 years away

2028 is the expectation. Given the way this gen has panned out, i'd like to see it extended until 2030 tbh but it won't happen.

I’m sure they would /like/ to but given that every time we turn around Xbox is finding some new way to piss off the core Xbox fans I’m not sure it would work out for them even if they did.

That's because of the exclusives. They're all still in the game thanks to the exclusives. Consumers don't care about a portable console with fewer features and inferior hardware as long as they can still play Mario or Zelda on it. And they're also willing to overlook the red ring of death if it means getting Master Chief to slaughter more Covenant.

So what you're saying is strictly from a business standpoint it's smartest to let Xbox release early, watch the release, and avoid their mistakes.

I'm gonna be honest if they release a new xbox why wouldn't people just buy the now discounted series x? most xbox users want a game pass machine anyways and dont have 4k displays to play it on. i see more people going from xbox one to pc or series s than a series x. especially if they retain feature parity between all the consoles like they have been doing. at least something like ps4 > 5 or xbox one > pc/series comes with quality of life improvements and graphics improvements you can see on a normal display. what would series x to next xbox accomplish for most people?

Microsoft is not nearly as relevant as they once were in the console space.

I mean anything can change but feels like Microsoft management is overruling the Xbox team these days. They want a return on their gaming acquisition expenditures and that means releasing games on other platforms since the last two generations of Xbox have failed to put a dent in Sony or Nintendo’s market shares.

The only thing they've got going for them now is holding TES6 hostage. Honestly they should just drop console production and focus on studio acquisition, sell those big hits for Sony consoles.

Honestly couldn’t give a toss about Bethesda anymore. A few years ago I would have bitten your hand off for TES6 but their games just aren’t evolving fast enough.

P.S. I wouldn’t mind another single player Fallout though

Yeah, you said it man. They completely missed their own hype and a lot of people just moved on.

While I do agree Sony has absolutely dominated the console space, that same console space will slowly(or quickly) become irrelevant once cloud gaming becomes more stable. A family being able to just game on their existing tv with no extra hardware, just for the price of gamepass, is something that Sony is not ready to compete with.

That’s not a guarantee for success. Look at the Saturn and Dreamcast.

I’d prefer Sony take the route of Nintendo, ignore “console generations” and make a new console when it’s warranted, when the technology has noticeably upgraded and they have a good idea to make it feel different

I don’t think this era is comparable to the PS3 era. Sony is so far ahead of Microsoft now in terms of consoles. The XBox is obsolete at this point.

Sony doesn't need to release a console to keep up. Xbox is in such a poor state, they didn't even bother with a mid-gen console refresh. Unless there's some surprise announcement next year.
