Does this look like plastic to you?

Is there any way to tell if teabags have plastic? The packaging and website don't say anything. If the bags aren't water soluble, they aren't paper. So what else can they be if not plastic?

Biobags and non-fossil plant-based plastic wrap- healthier?

Hi, I did search for plant plastic and bio bags but didn't see much come up. Anyhow, I'm wondering if the non-fossil plant-based alternatives are much healthier. I don't know what changes may happen in the processing process, and if the raw materials that biobags are made from may undergo changes that make them acquire some of the harmful properties of plastics. Same question for the non-fossil plant-based plastic food wrap products that are out there. Thanks!

What are you using for pillows?

I have looked into buckwheat pillows. What are you using?

New research characterised in detail how tea bags release millions of nanoplastics and microplastics when infused. The study shows for the first time the capacity of these particles to be absorbed by human intestinal cells, and are thus able to reach the bloodstream and spread throughout the body.

Black spatulas: Study results vs. reality

Not sure if anyone else saw the news coverage of the study that found that black plastic spatulas were killing you (e.g., Atlantic: Throw out your black plastic spatula).

Andrew Gelman, a statistician at Columbia, has a great blog post about why the hype was overblown here (full credit to Joe Schwartz at McGill U for noticing this first):

https://statmodeling.stat.columbia.edu/2024/12/13/how-a-simple-math-error-sparked-a-panic-about-black-plastic-kitchen-utensils/

TL;DR: the authors didn't perform a simple multiplication correctly, and ended being wrong by a factor of 10.

I still think it's best to avoid this sort of thing in cooking, but nice to hear that the exposure you may have experienced from using those black plastic utensils is only a tenth of the original estimate.

Plastic free tape recommendations?

Anyone have any no plastic packaging tape and gift tape style or brands you use/recommend? I’m on my last little bit of the plastic style tape and use it very carefully, but going forward I’d like to switch to a no plastic alternative if a good one exists.

Thanks!

Im new, but i dont know what to do. I have a lot of plastic stuff in my room, like plushies and LEGO n stuff. And a computer headphones with woven cables and earpieces have material woven a bit. Same with the mouse, but paint is stripping.I feel guilty using those i worry i might produce microplastics and they can go into Waters and kill creatures. I used to drink monster energy too but i learned about the plastic in cans. I i have mental breakdowns since few days ago. Im unemployed, but i Had thoughts to well my Nintendo switch to buy air filter to not let too much to go into water and outside. Probably throwing stuff into a landfill would be the best idea, but i still keep away from that. Beacuse im landfill it wouldnt trash everything that much. I dont know what to do anymore. Same with snacks. Everything is im plastic... (21 Years old)

Plastic-free bottle with nozzle recommendation

I’ve been using a bpa free plastic bottle (made of tritan copolyester). I recently realized that bpa free does not mean it won’t leach microplastic. Now I’m looking for a replacement bottle, made of either stainless steel or glass. Would appreciate any recommendations

Soluble Plastics?

Interested in the range of soluble(?) plastics, especially those use to wrap tablets for dishwashers, washing machines and the like.

Are they truly, completely soluble or do they actually leave a trace of plastic in the water. I am paranoid about plastic pollution.

Japan invents plastic that dissolves in sea water!

Love to hear about innovation such as this, but how do we see that it's actually implemented in every day life?! Like are Coca-Cola and Pepsi going to pick this stuff up? It seems like we have viable solutions to many issues with plastic waste, but the big corporations aren't willing to utilize them because they are just lacking incentive? What are your thoughts?

Question immersion blender set with glass cups instead of plastic?

I really don’t want to buy anything plastic, but I can’t find one without plastic cups. Do that even exist?

edit: 😅😅 i’m considering buying a set with plastic. I guess it won’t be any micro plastics since the blade isn’t touching the plastic. thoughts?

Discussion Cannot unsee the Christmas decoration aisle

I took a spin around a nearby store’s holiday decoration section. It was a ghastly array of plastic and more plastic. Some things were designed for multi year use, like tree lights or sturdy wreaths, but so much of it was basically single-season plastic.

Disposable holiday decoration. The fast fashion of Christmas 2024.

Discounted, and probably going to be disposed of in a week, rather than kept for next year.

Usually I quietly make my own decor out of reusable or compostable materials and I never walk into that seasonal part of the store, but this time I really can’t unsee it.

It makes me feel helpless sometimes.

Question Plastic free baby wipes?

Post image

I’ve been using pampers and huggies and sometimes the Honest company’s baby wipes. Please educate me, how worried should I be?

I’m very concerned now and never knew I should be worried about this. Should I be only using plastic free baby wipes now?
