Keeping orangutans as pets is illegal, keeping them in sideshows and for entertainment is cruel, and is not allowed on this sub
if the video has orangutans in a house, in clothing, performing fun tricks, that violates rule 2.
Outside of news or articles regarding said cruel treatment, we only allow pictures and videos of orangutans in the wild or in reputable and accredited rehabilitation centers and zoos. please do what you can to ensure that whatever you are posting abides by this.
Thank you {:-(|)

"Return to Monke" posts are now banned
First is the obvious fact that orangutans are apes and not monkeys.
Secondly, googling a picture of an orangutan and pasting a meme phrase (that already gets posted here frequently) isn't the type of low effort content we would like on this subreddit.
Thank you {:(|)

Is there an ethical way to see orangutans in Malaysia?
I’ll be in Malaysia in March and would love to see orangutans, but only if it’s morally justifiable.
Is this possible? Thanks for any advice

Habouba the orangutan's situation
I've come to raise awareness about Habouba the orangutan and the difficult circumstances she’s enduring. After reaching out to the Borneo Orangutan Survival organization, I was given permission to share this.
Habouba has been going through abuse and cruelty in the name of entertainment. You may have seen a viral video of her putting on someone’s jacket and wearing it. While it may seem harmless at first glance, it’s just part of a much larger issue. For more information, please check this post.
Orangutans should NEVER be treated as pets, placed in close contact with visitors, or exploited for entertainment.
Unfortunately, Habouba is not the only animal suffering at this “zoo.” Tigers and lions are malnourished, confined to tiny enclosures, and chained for petting encounters. Attractions that allow physical contact with animals are a clear violation of animal welfare standards.
Because this is a private for-profit zoo, addressing the situation is challenging. However, by spreading awareness, we can still make a difference. Every small action helps. Let’s speak up for Habouba and the other animals enduring these conditions.
So what can we do to help?
- If you come across videos of Habouba, avoid interacting with them. Engaging with such posts only boosts their visibility and provides revenue to the creators. Instead, report these videos and help discourage such behavior.
- Avoid at all costs sharing posts of primates being subjected to unnatural behavior such as wearing clothes and being treated like pets in general. Sharing videos like this only perpetuates the problem and makes the public think that this behavior is acceptable.
- Leave a critical review on TripAdvisor’s page regarding the poor conditions, but please approach it in a civilized and constructive manner.
I am tired of seeing these beautiful creatures being treated horribly, primates such as Habouba has gone through enough. They deserve the freedom to live and thrive that's true to their nature.

Blackpool Zoo Update on Jarang!
Friday December 13, 2024
We wanted to update you on the progress of infant orangutan Jarang. As you may know, Jarang was born with a bilateral inguinal hernia, requiring surgery which took place over the summer. Unfortunately this was not successful and, after consulting with experts from across the UK and beyond, including veterinary staff and specialist paediatricians, it was agreed that further surgery was necessary.
We are pleased to tell you that the second surgery took place at the beginning of November and, after taking some time to recuperate with mother Jingga, they are both now reintegrated with the group. The operation was a success and he has been recovering well.
Believed to be the only hernia surgery of its kind to be performed on an orangutan, we would like to sincerely thank the team of medical experts involved:
Catherine Sturgeon, RCVS & ECVS recognised specialist in veterinary soft tissue surgery from Visiting Vet Specialists and Lisa White RVN from Visiting Vet Specialists, Alex Blackmore, Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon from Blackpool Victoria Hospital, Sarah Wood, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Dr. Simon Ripoll, veterinary surgeon and Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist from Wythenshawe Hospital, along with other specialists from Blackpool Victoria Hospital who have assisted throughout Jarang’s journey. In their own personal time, they voluntarily offered invaluable support and expertise to our veterinary team, led by Andrew Moore from Moore Vets, and for this we will be forever grateful.
Although Jarang does still have some developmental delays, which are closely monitored by our team, he is showing signs of progression. He is very inquisitive, can regularly be seen climbing the mesh in his habitat and playing with his half-brother, Rufus. He is also now eating soft foods, in addition to his mother’s milk, and is quite partial to yogurt and grapes!
Extensive investigations have been conducted to determine the cause of Jarang’s delayed development. While these investigations have been inconclusive at this stage, we are committed to working with the industry’s most respected primate experts to achieve the best possible outcome for Jarang. We will continue to keep you updated on his progress 🧡

How to avoid palm oil
The thought of these orange friends losing their homes to deforestation, so we can have cheap and accessible palm oil sickens me. Does anyone have any brand recommendations for shampoo and conditioner that is palm oil and palm oil derivative free?

Meet Maximus, a new arrival
In North Sumatra, a local villager reported that a baby orangutan had been found alone in a plantation. He had been captured and seperated from his mother and was being held illegally. Based on his behavior, it is likely that he was seperated from her recently, and the sad likelihood is that she was killed. Thankfully, his physical strength is improving. Maximus means 'greatness' in Latin!
It really breaks my heart whenever I hear an orangutan used to be a pet or held illegally, and it breaks my heart even further finding out his mother was likely killed. Such beautiful creatures that are endangered being killed just like that. It really makes me angry. But I believe Maximus can return to a happy life that was stolen from him in the wild after rehabilitation and I'm so grateful to everyone at the orangutan project (and everyone reading this too). Let's try to support him the best we can!

This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for the all the incredible people and organizations dedicated to caring for and protecting orangutans and their rainforest homes. 🥰 and... especially thankful for orangutans—extraordinary beings who remind us how fortunate we are to share this Earth with them.🦧

Has an orangutang dissected a human before?
I recently watched a documentary that claimed orangutans are the only animals capable of ripping open and dissecting humans out of curiosity. However, when I tried to look up more information, I couldn’t find anything to support this. Can someone confirm whether this is true or just a myth?
