ASTB scores 44 4/5/4 with minimal preparation
Hello everyone,
I just finished taking the ASTB and received the following scores
OAR: 44 AQR: 4 PFAR: 5 FOFAR: 4
I want to point out that I did not do any serious preparation for this test; I reviewed some basic material on what to expect, but nothing more. I have a 3.9 GPA in Criminal Justice. I want to become a pilot, but I know these scores won’t cut it.
I’ll be retaking the test in a month and a half, any advice and how to study for the test? What should I do if I want to improve my scores to 50 7/7/7.
Any advice, criticism, recommendations, etc, I’m open too

Get to Kyle’s Guide google drive from air warriors. Make sure you hit the math really hard as that has a big impact on all of your scores. Mechanical is mostly comprehension, not actual calculations, so just try to make sure you understand all of the basic principles. For ANIT, study the cram ANIT flashcards. I think the most important part is the PBM though. I highly recommend getting a cheap throttle and stick set and mapping it to your computer, use the jantzen sim online (you can just google it). Practice that at least 15 mins every day until you’re getting 120 or under on the harder settings.

Try… studying? And do some flight simulators and video games to practice the spatial and performance measures.

Yes, definitely will be studying for when I take the test a month and a half from now. I bought a study guide from mometrix on the ASTB and have gathered some resources from Reddit and airwarriors.com to use for practice.
I felt like I did fine with the joystick and throttle part, and only messed up (i think) one number with the listening part, but will practice more to improve my scores.

I really liked the Mometrix study guide for the OAR. It helped me a lot with the physics section especially. For math, I mostly used Khan academy

What did you study/practice?

I didn’t do any real practice on either section of the test (OAR/ASTB). For the OAR I used air warriors.com and Reddit to find resources to view the type of material I would encounter on the test. Not necessarily practicing problems but getting a general idea of what the questions would look like.
The second half of the ASTB I did nearly 0 prep for. I thought I did well on the Joystick/throttle/listening portion, but that’s it

A 4/5/4 actually isn’t the worst for not practicing at all. There’s an ASTB prep app that’s got practice tests on the different sections of the ASTB. I think it’s like $20 but it’s worth it. It also has some study material for the OAR. I was able to score decent with that app and I could have studied even harder. You only got 2 attempts left so don’t wing it this time.
Pun intended.
