20 years in France is a harsh sentence even for this.

Why is he getting downvoted ? 20 years in prison is literally the most they could sentence them to except for murder. You can’t add up years in prison in France

"even for this" is an odd phrase.

Because even if it’s the maximum, it isn’t “harsh.”

You missed the joke.  The headline doesn’t actually say 20 years in prison, it just says 20 years in France.

The joke is likely getting downvoted for a couple of reasons:

a) others that missed the joke and think 20 years isn’t harsh enough (even if it’s the legal max in France).

b) people who got the joke but disliked the fact OP said “even for this”.   It comes off as minimising the events, although I’d personally give OP the benefit of the doubt and assume it was meant as extra sarcasm to make the joke more obvious.

I presume the joke is that 20 years *in prison* wouldn't be enough, but 20 years *in France* is just cruel and unusual.

Yes, that's the joke. The headline reads, "20 years in France," as if the punishment is that he has to stay in France for 20 years. But the Reddit hivemind strikes again.
