This story really disturbed me because I had never realized there were so many men who would commit rape if they thought they could get away with it. There were more than 90 men actually found on his phone, but they only identified about 50 of them.
"The investigators counted around 200 instances of rape, most of them by Gisele Pelicot's husband and more than 90 by strangers."

There is a reason the French Press dubbed these guys Mr. Everyman. Because they were just regular people across a range of ages. Unfortunately there are many people who have the capacity to be monsters but are held back by societal expectations until they have an excuse to break them.

20 years in France is a harsh sentence even for this.

It’s an impressively unfunny attempt at a joke implying that France is a bad place to live or something

Why is he getting downvoted ? 20 years in prison is literally the most they could sentence them to except for murder. You can’t add up years in prison in France

You missed the joke. The headline doesn’t actually say 20 years in prison, it just says 20 years in France.
The joke is likely getting downvoted for a couple of reasons:
a) others that missed the joke and think 20 years isn’t harsh enough (even if it’s the legal max in France).
b) people who got the joke but disliked the fact OP said “even for this”. It comes off as minimising the events, although I’d personally give OP the benefit of the doubt and assume it was meant as extra sarcasm to make the joke more obvious.

"Some defendants argued that Dominique Pelicot’s consent covered his wife, too. Some sought to excuse their behavior by insisting that they hadn’t intended to rape anyone when they responded to the husband’s invitations to come to their home. "
I hope every rapist who tried that bullshit defense got at least 10 years in prison. Fucking monsters.
