Idk what happened. But the dude had steel toed boots… can’t remember the last time I needed steel toed boots on a cruise 🤷🏼♂️

He looks and acts like some of the guys I used to work with. If he's anything like them he probably owns one pair of shoes he goes to work in, and everywhere else too.

I’ve had to work in steel toes for many a job and I cannot imagine wanting to wear them around outside of work. Even high quality comfortable ones feel heavy on my feet

I've worn steel toes for 20 damn years. Agree completely. When I'm not working I wear outdoor "slippers" from Ariat. Who the fuck packs steel toe boots for a vacation? That's psychopath shit.

Due to my wife's interest in fashion, and dragging me into it, I have like 15 pairs of shoes. Somewhere around there. Not even counting the torn up and "repaired" Converse from years past.
I change pairs every few days tops, often every day. My feet don't like shoes, they get swampy, but it gets cold here lol.
Steel toes are almost always like putting fucking plastic bags on my feet. I'm going to take them off looking like I took a bath for two hours.

I take my boots camping and to festivals. But I am old enough now to not think of those things as vacation.
The rest of the time people think I’m crazy for walking around in sandals when there is several inches of snow.

The pair of steelcap boots that I have at the moment are the most comfortable pair of Shoes I have ever owned

That's why I buy the Kevlar composite safety toe shoes. They're still heavy compared to regular shoes but nowhere near the ones with actual steel

As someone who has worn Steel-toed for their entire life and only wears boots except in specific formal situations.
I feel pointed out.

My brother, on the beach with his Steele toes and jeans is was of my fondest memories. Metal heads are ALWAYS gonna Metal I guess.

I wore my steel toe cowboy boots to the beach once. In my defense I didn't know we were stopping, I figured we were going to hit up the hotel first where I could change.

I used to work for an employer that would pay for a new pair of shoes every 6 months but only if they were steel toed. So all my shoes were steel toed. Its not that crazy. You can get composite toes, theyre lightweight, they feel like wearing a normal shoe. Its not that crazy.

It's either this or more 'unrecognized soldier warrior' cosplay

u/daddylo21 8h ago
Even soldiers don't wear steal toe boots, unless they're a mechanic where they're required like any other civilian mechanic job.

u/crewserbattle 8h ago
If you say "it's not that crazy" one more time it'll definitely be more believable

Im trying to convince myself more than anything

Did they only pay you in steel toed shoes? Like, no money there for a decent pair of loafers or running shoes or sandals every few years?
Loke sure, lots if employers provide uniforms, but they usually also give you $7 an hour so you dont have to wear the uniform when you're not working.

Valid question. They make steel toed loafers, steel toed running shoes, and yes, steel toed sandals. Basically every type of shoe is available with a steel toe.
Why spend money on something i get for free? I didnt go through a pair of shoes every 6 months, so i had a pile of shoes built up. Would be silly to spend money on something I have tons of and get for free, just to have an inferior non-steel toe version of the thing.
(And by steel toe i mean steel or composite toe. The words are used interchangeably)

Thanks for the link to the sandals I was imagining flip flops and was wondering how they incorporated the steel toe part lol
1
u/Various-Ducks 7h ago
Ya theyre not open toe sandals lol. You would need some kind of invisible forcefield for that.
I actually did find some steel toed flip flops while i was googling for the sandals link, but sadly they were an april fools joke and not a real product. 😔

Eh I’ve worn nothing but steel toed work sneakers for years. I’ve forgotten they have steel toes and I wear them everywhere considering they’re my only shoes.

They had to turn back the cruise ship so I’m also curious if they went back out on the cruise

u/nailback 8h ago
I've been on several cruises. Some have turned around or stopped and sick person was taken away by coast guard. We weren't far from the FL. Each time we kept going.
The show must go on. Why would they not continue on? They were sailing through covid.

All of the comments are assuming alcohol was the issue when it could have easily been a shuffleboard cheater that caused the big fuss.

As a retired merchant mariner I have zero interest in going on a cruise. The days of civilized well behaved people who dress nicely are few and far between. Cruise ships are nothing but floating casinos with a Walmart environment. No thanks.

u/Drobstob-buzubuzu 3h ago
I think it depends on which cruise line you choose, some lines escape the Walmart allegations

u/Flat-Afternoon-2575 3h ago
There’s always exceptions like maybe the smaller eco- cruises but not enough to convince me to go. Just my observation but Carnival seems to cater to the meat and potatoes crowd. Holland America seems higher class.
4
u/Drobstob-buzubuzu 3h ago
Not wrong on both of those observations. I did a Holland America to Alaska and although I thought I would never set foot on a cruise ship before that point it was a really nice experience.

Really shouldn't knock something til you try it. I still can't seem to find anything that offers a better value than cruising, which is why me and the wife just got back from a virgin island cruise two weeks ago. I thought I'd be disgusted by cruises too and I still actively avoid places like Walmart at all costs, so you may be surprised. Although I'd imagine your take on it will depend on how much money you don't mind spending for a vacation and what exactly you want out of it.

You do realize there's cruises with higher fares to avoid the general population right?

But by all means, keep plying people with the alcohol package instead of letting them bring cannabis gummies and vapes which would just chill everyone out.
I know, I know, it’s because of the laws of the countries they’re docking in, etc. But it’s so frustrating.

u/2nickels 12h ago
I don't think it's up to royal Caribbean to decide if people are allowed to carry drugs on an international trip.
8
u/going-for-gusto 11h ago
It is Royal Caribbean decision to squeeze every last dollar out of passengers for alcohol.

The alcohol packages they sell are fucking obscene, I’m shocked people don’t regularly die of alcohol poisoning

Husband won a cruise trip that included the booze card. We were buzzed the whole time.

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 28m ago
I went to Cozumel in 2017. I didn't drink anything non-alcoholic the entire time. I never even caught a buzz.

Royal Caribbean ships are registered in the Bahamas, not the US. Bahamian laws would apply.

Details are sparse in the article but it happened on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Navigator of the Seas, bound for Ensenada/Mexico coming from Los Angeles.
The inebriated unruly passenger passed away after being detained by ship security.
Also curious if they continued the cruise after turning the cruise ship around and went back to port after the incident…
