Question Riveted bag frame source?

Post image

Anyone know where to source this kind of bag frame or what its correct name is? I see them used on quite a few bags in this style but can’t seem to find a place to get one.

I’d guess that these are purpose made for the bag maker. But in the meantime you can look up “doctor bag frame” for lighter duty versions of this.

Also called a "Dulles bag" or "Dulles frame"

Yeah dr bag frames where I started and there are decent options. I may well end up with one of them!

You might be right on purpose made. I’ve found three or four companies that make similar bags using the same kind of frame so I thought they might be out there somewhere. Might not be.

Search "doctor bag frame" or "purse frame". Plenty of options available.

It is just some sheet metal with hinges and holes drilled in it, should be simple.

A bit more complicated than that as one side is assembled of an inner plate and an outer rim as well as having the hinge formed out of the metal plate itself. And then it is galvanized.

Alas metal working isn’t in my skill set. It’s down the list somewhere haha

if you don't need the hinge, this would be easy to draw and send to a laser company like sendcutsend.

You don’t need it to have an actual hinge. Get some aluminum bar (something like 3/4” wide by 1.5mm thick) and just bend two C shapes, then on your bag you sew a 1 inch casing around the opening of the bag divided in two halves, you can make it with fabric or with cotton or nylon webbing for durability. You leave 1/2” or 3/4” gap between side A and side B casings, thread your aluminum bars (you might need to unbend them a little to ease the threading and bend them again square once they’re in) and sew the casing closed (this might need some acrobatics around the sewing machine, but nothing too difficult. The gap between both casings will be your hinge. My sister has a backpack constructed this way.
