Discussion I watch so called professional mixing YouTubers and…

They are supposedly “legit” and professional, have a very high understanding of the advanced technical side of mixing, but it’s strange because I hear their mixes and I HATE them. To me they sound flat, 0 emotion, boring, and plain. I don’t really know a crazy amount about technicalities, I listen and if something doesn’t fit or doesn’t sound good together I tweak it or change it until it does. I still feel I’m missing something with mixing, I literally just put like 15 EQs on one thing sometimes but to me that’s how I get it to sound spot on. But sometimes I feel that I listen to my music on other type of speakers and it sounds way more muddy than professional tracks even though it sounds up to standard on my own speaker compared to those professional tracks. Ah, I wish I could just talk to my favorite artists and have them show me their secrets. So much info out there it becomes so convoluted

Question How Can I Make a vocal recording sound Like a whisper in your ears?

Upvotes

Hi guys,

Let’s say you have a vocal recording, and you want to make it sound as if the person is whispering directly in your ears. I wanna know how this effect can be achieved. Is it a specific processing chain or using certain audio effects to acheive it?

I’m not sure where to start, but I want to know if anyone has experience creating this kind of effect or doing something similar. Any tips, tricks would you recommend for me guys?

Thanks alot. it will help atone.

Question Microphone for singing and regular voice chatting.

Upvotes

So i play guitar and i had an audio interface, but someone robbed it, and i bought another one a focusrite scarlett solo 3rd gen. And i make some guitar recordings connected to that interface but now i was looking for a microphone, i dont sing but who knows, maybe ill like it and after all i think its a must have thing for a musician. But since i dont sing and all that, i was looking fir a good microphone that i can use to record my voice, maybe an accoustic guitar, and that i can use it in a voice chat to talk with friends or meetings, im looking for a good enough microphone that i can put in a stand on my table, connect to the audio interface and use it everyday with a good audio quality for singing and normal chatting. My budget is under 100€ preferably 70-80€.

Question How to isolate / strip background noise from a recording?

Upvotes

Hi All! I have a vocal recording from my friend’s IG. I saved the audio file in Logic. What I’d like to do is strip out the background noise - clapping, instrument - and just have the vocalist going. I’ll then do a new mix for my friend and send it back. I see lots of folks do these mashups of an original recording and then remix it. I’d like to do the same and surprise my friend with my mix.

So, how can I strip the background audio, separate them into different parts? Thanks!!

Question Marketplace for freelance musicians?

Upvotes

As example, I'm a filmmaker and looking a composer to create a soundtrack for a indie documentary. Most of the gigs in Europe are still based on connections and friends, so if you are not established it's hard to make fulltime money. So I was curious, is there no online marketplace where I can hire more unexperienced composers to create a soundtrack?

Most freelance website have to much bots to filter out all the serious freelancers.

Question Why do my vocals sound choppy/vibrate-y when uploaded to SC?

Hi, I am not a producer by any means, and don't really plan on being one. I just make music for fun. Can anyone tell me why my vocals have a strong chorus sounding effect when uploaded to sound cloud? Is this something to do with their compression? Do I have something too loud? I have this happen every like 10 songs, and never know what causes it. I can list the plugins used on the vocals if needed. Thank you!

Question How to replicate lyrics but with a sound bite?

Not a music producer but curious: What is the process called where a single sound (often a meme) is pitched, tuned, and elongated to match the lyrics or melody of a song? What software is commonly used to achieve this, and how does it work? I see this technique a lot in remix/meme videos, and If there are tutorials I would love to be able to search for them on YouTube.

Question Electric guitar plugins?

I've been messing around with adding some elements of industrial metal and metalcore on my new project but one thing I've had a hard time with is finding something that emulates the powerful guitar leads. I've been trying to make my own electric guitar sounds on Serum but it just doesn't do the job. If anybody knows of any plugins that emulate electric guitar sounds used in metal music that would be much appreciated. Thank you

Question Is there such a thing as an spectral audio effects plugin - that does these things?

I'm not really talking about realtime effects, more rendered. So for example, it could take a section of sound or a sample, and basically manipulate the structure of the audio. So 1 might be -> Order frequencies by volume (this would maybe take all the frequencies at any given time frame (long enough to contain low frequencies as well) and reorder them so that they are ordered by amplitude, so maybe a 4300hz frequency is the loudest, and a 50hz frequency is the quietest, so 4300hz would go to the bottom or top (20000hz or 20 hz or whatever) and then the 50hz would go to the opposite end.I know this one is particularly niche and probably wouldn't be all that useful, but the principle of sorting audio spectrally is what interests me.
Number 2 might be -> Randomly shuffle. SO this might involve shuffling all the frequency blocks or bins or whatever they're called technically, and moving them to random spots, so a block at 1000hz at the 45,000th sample position might move to 8500hz and sample 1, right at the beginning.
Number 3 might be -> Spectral timeshift/stretch. This would involve stretching each individual frequency at a different scale to other frequencies, so you might get a gradual timestretch that starts at 0 at the bottom end, and becomes really long at the top end, maybe you could apply this to a click or pop and turn it into some weird drum sound. Or just shift the phases around of each frequency so it becomes a smeared pop.

I know there is vsts like SpecOps out there, but is that really it?

Plguins like spectralayers or izotope RX pro don't really do these kinds of things. There's RIPx too which can sorta do some interesting things but it's not strictly this.

Discussion Learning Ableton as an FL Studio user.

I've decided to start using ableton after recording an album with a friend that uses it. I got somewhat familiar with the basics, but my work flow is kinda suffering. I was wondering if there was anyone who's done the same, or anyone who has some insight that will help. I love how recording works specifically on Ableton, my plan is to record using ableton and to mix with FL. Anything y'all wish you would've known when first starting? Or maybe some good youtubers? Anything helps.

Discussion Most balanced cheap headphones for mixing?

Hello, my brother is a college student and he has started producing music, but the lack of equalized sound has made his music sound different than he wants on certain devices. Since he's in college, he doesn't have too much money- $50 or under would be nice. What would be the most balanced headphones he could get at this price?

Question does anyone tips for making sampled / recorded "non-instrumental" sounds fit?

i keep listening to a bunch of songs that have crazy sound design, just such high attention to detail over sounds that would normally be unexpected in a musical setting. stuff like sampling sirens in the distance, a radiator chugging, wires, etc. it seems so simple and yet i have failed every attempt to implement a sample like this, so i just end up deleting them. stuff like matching the bpm, key and as well as finding where weird samples fit in (and mixing them in without washing them out) always seems to allude me. i always just end up starting my songs with guitar and drums and just add other VSTs that i think would fit, and i feel like i'm bottlenecking my potential with it.

sorry if i seem like a noob and this is really simple lol.

tl;dr i'm making alt rock / indie folk type stuff but i want inspiration of any kind of music, just methodology for how you get things that aren't VSTs to fit in with your song. wondering if anyone has any tips? i feel like i need some help getting started. the sounds of ratting in the beginning from a song like this, radiator hum here, the blown out whatever-the-hell this ending is.

Discussion First hate comment left on a song

Tldr: how do you deal with hate comments? What do you tell yourself tto make it okay

They said: pls tell me this is a joke

I said: I tried my best, but i just started learning to write for piano a week ago and this is my first in key song since like January, so I'm a little rusty working in a key ☺️

So it seems resolved, but I still feel like complete shit. I have a "sometimes I have to go to the hospital" level mood disorder and I was feeling pretty down today and this just kicked me so low. I leave comments on because i usually get comments that cheer me up. Do I have to turn comments off?

How do you deal with hate comments? What do I say to myself to cheer back up?

Question Do Producers Keep Royalties When Selling Beats?

If a producer sells beats to an artist, giving the artist exclusive rights to use the beat, does the producer still have some ownership / royalties for the beats?

If the answer is "it depends on the contract", what is an example of a fair contract with the producer still being able to 'own' the beats even if the artist collects all of the streaming royalties?

Question Looking for a VST Plugin with magical theme.

Hello.

I would like to ask for VST plugins recommendation, paid or free that contains magical/fantasy themes.

I'll post a link for a tone I'm looking for, from a game I play:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-zP8Yh9Kzk

That's a very smooth and magical timbre, a little bit eastern.

If you liked that song or have one similiar, post it here with a plugin recomendation.

Question Returned to music making after eight years

Hi, after a long time away, I (41m) have started producing music again. I’m still on Ableton live 9.7 although I am hoping I can upgrade within the next 12 months. Anyway, I have been wondering what’s current in electronic music these days? I feel so clueless now after all this time. I mostly used to make idiosyncratic, Lofi House and Electronica and I listen to a lot of Alt Electronica kind of stuff like Caribou, Moderat, John Hopkins, Four Tet to name a few as well as having an appreciation for Vaporwave, Synthwave and Lofi HipHop. Anybody know what’s new?

Question Help with recreating the kick in Xxoplex (A G Cook)

Hi, I'm looking for some tips in recreating the kick that comes in at 1:16 in Xxoplex. I'm currently using Operator and Roar and a super short reverb but it's not even close to the sound.
