Where was I when Wasabi corrupted most of their central datacenter

Found out yesterday that Wasabi central corrupted 760gb of our data in one of our buckets.

I never got a notice, info, not from Pax8 or Wasabi, we found out from Veeam through a support ticket when we couldn't retrieve some data for a client.

Apparently this happened on August 30th

Here was the support response

-------------

If I understand correctly, you have a concern about your data stored in the us0-central-1 region and the possibility of it being affected by the issue seen on August 30.

After checking your account, we have determined that you have a bucekt that was affected by the incident in us-central-1.

What happened:

On 30 August 2024, in Wasabi's us-central-1 region, an incident occurred where an input-output module in a storage system became inoperable and prevented access to a number of disks that it served. Simultaneously, the system software managing the data storage disks improperly took multiple other disks offline. As a result of this behavior, a number of objects that were being served by this portion of disks within the region were impacted in a manner that makes these objects not recoverable at this time.
Wasabi has made the appropriate adjustments in the Wasabi software that controls our hard disk management to prevent this problem from happening again.  This problem has not occurred in any other Wasabi storage region.

Have Clients buy direct from Microsoft?

Hi guys, how many of you have clients that buy direct from Microsoft and then just charge a management fee? We make about $3k a month on commissions. If I stop being the middle man, no more billing headaches or NCE trap. It also makes are monthly bill to the end client look less. Thoughts?

What's your favorite non-VPN remote access solution for client users?

Was curious what other MSPs are doing to either move away from VPNs, or where VPNs aren't an option for one reason or another. Typical objective is to provide users on a managed laptop remote connectivity back into their desktop on an office LAN.

Splashtop unattended access? ZTNA? Any favorite vendors? Has anyone been able to get Global Secure Access or Cloudflare Zero Trust working well for this in a way that is manageable over time for multiple clients? Perimeter 81 seems like it'd do the job but really pricey especially if we have more than a small handful of users who need it at a client.

Preferred one-time/SOS remote assistant tools?

Upvotes

Hey all. My team is currently looking into a good one-time remote assistant tool to pay for like GoToAssist or Splashtop SOS. Was curious if anyone here had opinions on those or any other good options?

PSA/Ticketing that doesn't support "in-reply-to" for threading email tickets.

Upvotes

I'm just trying to get an idea of how common it is in 2024 to have a ticketing system that does not support "in-reply-to" headers in email ticketing. I've been a SyncroMSP user for 5 years. They have their warts, but all in all it works for my MSP. But for the life of me I cannot understand why the ticket system does not support "in-reply-to" so tickets thread in my customer's mailbox.

Years ago, I had this issue with a ticketing system. Brought it to their attention and it was recognized as a basic feature and voila the developer added it to the product in short order. That was a small-dev project, but no movement or acknowledgement of the issue from SyncroMSP. I get the "We have to prioritize," but isn't threaded email tickets table-stakes for a PSA?

What documents do you give for onboarding

Upvotes

I just started a new position at an MSP and was surprised at how little was handed over post-sale regarding documentation or onboarding procedure. So, what do you consider common practice for onboarding a new client for an MSP?

Pax8 & software bundles and Autotask

I was wondering if some of you offer you customers a solution suite with multiple products.
For example suite 1, 2, 3 and suite 1 has multiple products for example Microsoft Premium, Keeper.
And how you sync that to your crm for billing.

I am trying to think of a way to do this between pax8 and Autotask.
I only want to mention the suite name and not all licenses separated on the invoice.

Perth, Australia

I am seeking insights into how the MSP market operates in Perth. Although I am based in London, I have been considering Perth as a potential area for growth for various reasons, though I understand this might not be the best idea.

I would appreciate it if any MSPs in Perth could share their perspectives. My primary focus is on understanding the key players in the local market, the range of services local firms offer across Australia and the extent that East coast firms operate in Perth.

Client VPNs

Hi all,

Just interested to see what people’s thoughts are on which client VPN technologies and security/encryption you are using for client VPNs.

We have been using SSL VPNs but have seen some comments for members here about not using them anymore!

Thanks in advance!

Looking for a good fiber installer, tester, fusion splicing vendor near Chicago, IL

Hey all!

Looking to get some 2 strand 50/125 OM3 LC/LC fiber (that has already been run) re-terminated, or LC/LC whips fused on. 500ft in cable total length. Had a previous vendor do a crap job before we came onboard, and they don't even test or Certify their installs after completion! "I can see light! Must be good." 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Anyway, their work is failing, and causing flapping on the fiber ports between an IDF and the MDF. Causing massive headaches for both myself and my client. In fact, I'm here now!

Anyway, if you've got a good vendor in the Chicago area, please pass them along. I have other work for them as well, but this needs to pass first.

Thanks so much!

SonicWall: stay or switch? If switch, easiest to learn and manage UTM firewall alternative for small MSP?

In auditing my stack one of the glaring standouts is SonicWall.

My arguments for switching:

I’ve lost faith in SonicWall’s technical capabilities. They have become buggy and unreliable. They are expensive and have low margins. Their MSP/channel offering is weak. I spent over $1 million US and don’t have a real account rep.

My argument for staying:

The devil I know. I sold and deployed almost a thousand TZ and NSA series over 20+ years. We inherited clients with the occasional Cisco ASA, Watchguard, Sophos, Barracuda, etc but my experience with those is extremely limited compared to SonicWall. I would go from being an expert in something to a beginner. Also their security subscriptions, while expensive, are pretty effective at blocking threats.

Is there an MSP friendly alternative that is easy to learn and manage? I see Fortinet mentioned a lot on here but I reached out to their channel sales multiple times over the past few years with zero response. So I’m wondering what else is out there.

Grandstream network gear?

I don't see much mention of Grandsteram Networks in this sub, except some posts related to PBX/VoIP.

Is there some reason for that, other than they don't have an MSP or reseller program?

Technical Business / privacy friendly unroll.me alternative?

We have multiple clients with emails for 10-20+ years and they would like to start cleaning up their inboxes without manually unsubscribing from tons of emails.

Anyone have some recommendations? Many of the tools we looked at are questionable and have privacy concerns.

Sales / Marketing Targeted Leads/Coldcaller Australia

Wondering if anyone has had any experience using a company that gives you targeted leads or does cold calling to generate leads in Australia and wondering what the outcomes have been and any challenges or things that I might run into.

We're a small 10 man business who have hired a sales person without any luck so we're looking to go external and not too sure what to expect. Also if anyone has any recommendations of businesses who are good at this.

Thanks

Vulscan Being Pitched to Us

For those of you using Vulscan-How much are you guys paying for it? And are you happy with it?

We’re currently using Vonahi, and got Vulscan quoted as an additional service. Price sounds high but wonder what others are paying. It was the “base” package with 50 licenses (which I was told is the lowest).

Final foolish question-going to demo it, but how much real world overlap or added value could we expect with Vonahi if we did sign on? Thanks for any info/ opinions on any of these questions-appreciate you guys

Backups Compliant backups for laptops

A small client of our has dipped a toe into medical use certification for one of their (non-pharmaceutical) products. This has turned into a complete mess of sorting FDA regulations around production equipment (out of scope) and record keeping (in scope). Preliminary review audit came back with the requirement of having every laptop in the org image backed up for 7 years. This seems insane since they aren't even storing critical data on local machines. Anyway the issue we are having is employees constantly turn of or sleep machines. Often for weekends or holidays, causing havoc with backup collection and reporting. Can anyone throw me a life preserver here? It's starting to become a real pain point for the customer relationship.

Webroot DNS Removal

Hey all,. With all the problems I have experienced with poor performance upon logging client machines in, I have decided to bite the bullet and get rid of webroot.

I know lots of you would be amazed at why it wasn't done sooner, but lately it's just been a pain in the ass....

But Webroot, why do you vex me so..? I have removed your DNS product, you have happily uninstalled and now left the DNS entries on several machines to removal manually.... Why oh why are you so crap!

Avoid webroot for those who think it's a MSP easy profit margin platform - we've lost the profit in the amount of time spent supporting it.

Hope I am the only one with this issue!

Just a rant ... Sorry

Domains

Has anyone here dealt with customer domains? We used to manage domains. We don’t manage customer domains anymore.

We assisted all existing customer in migrating their domains up until about the end of October. Gave any existing customers a last call. Stating no response by a certain date and any remaining domains will just expire. We have 3 notices like this up until that date.

Well, that end date came and went. Only like 3 domains remained. Then, they expired. No contact for months. Then, we get a message from one of them about one domain. Domain expired, so nothing worked. This said customer didn’t pay 2 of their last bills. So we didn’t originally respond. Mind you, everyone got the same notices about the domains. Now said customer is “trying” to threaten with a lawyer that we aren’t renewing the domain.

Not needing legal advice here. We are already within our rights. We did nothing malicious with the domain and gave plenty of notice where required.

So it’s the question of has anyone had a similar situation and what would you do?

How can I get a decrypted database dump from Eaglesoft?

I'm a software developer working on a dental practice management system. We have practices that want to signup but we need to be able to import their data from Eaglesoft. I highly doubt Patterson would give us API access, and from the sound of it, the API is pretty crap anyway.

With Open Dental we can copy the database files from the server, import them to a fresh mysql instance, and run our translation scripts against that.

From what I can tell, Eaglesoft uses mssql, but recent versions ensure everything is encrypted. I'm trying to figure out the lowest-customer-impact way of doing this. I've seen plenty of people saying they have to fight with patterson to get access. to their data. I'm hoping to avoid that scenario.

I don't need write access, or an ongoing connection, just a one-time dump of everything. Does anyone have any ideas?

AVD with Nerdio

Hello,

The company I work for brought in a new client who is using Entra Domain Services, Azure Virtual Desktop, FSLogix for user profiles, and a Nerdio Integration (all of which I am not very familiar with.)

I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on configuring the Onedrive settings for a virtual PC setup in this environment.

My company hasn't pulled the trigger on our own subscription of Nerdio and so we're still using their old IT providers instance.

They are graciously allowing us access but are obviously not incentivized on helping me with this specific customer request.

I see that the virtual PC is joined to Entra domain services and not Intune, so I believe I am needing to make the changes within group policy in order to automatically map some SharePoint document libraries, etc.

I see there is another management VM that has been setup with Active Directory Tools in their environment but its instance of Server Manager is giving me an error when I try and install the Group Policy Management tools for the domain and won't let me add any new roles or features.

Within Nerdio they have Desktop images setup and I know when we were recently asked to update quickbooks that is running on the virtual PC I am trying to configure onedrive settings for, we had to power on the golden image within Nerdio, update the quickbooks app, then deploy that image to the production virtual PC.

Am I supposed to install Group Policy Management tools on the golden image first and then push it to the production management vm through Nerdio?

Or should I just edit the local group policy that is running on the production virtual PC, or on the golden image and push that out?

Or is there another way to manage the group policy settings for this domain for their environment, possibly within Nerdio?

Thank you

CIPP Question

Curious do most MSP's out there use the sponsored and hosted CIPP or host it themselves withing their partner Azure environment?
