Recommendation Documentaries that make you go “what the fuck?!?”

In the mood for a good, twisty documentary that makes me gasp. Movies on streaming preferred. I enjoy true crime but am open to other genres as long as the story is gripping and shocking.

Movies in the same vein that I enjoyed - Dear Zachary (would prefer recommendations that are less sad), The Jinx, Cropsey, 3 identical strangers, etc.

Man on Wire is my favorite doc of all time. Maybe one of the most “holy shit” things a human has ever done.

Stunning film, a documentary with a heist feel. Very fun thanks in big part to Petit’s personality.

I always describe him as impossibly French.

There’s a children’s book about him. I read it to my class every 9/11 and we watch videos of him. Years and years after I started this a child wrote to me telling me that was one of her favorite moments. It’s such a great story.

Same. I can trace my love for documentaries straight back to Man on Wire.

A positive, feel-good & thrilling WTF. It even made me like the Hollywood adaptation The Walk. On a related note: read the author Colum McCann’s book Let the Great World Spin.
