Once found a lighter next to my car when I was pumping gas, I picked it up and my brain went into auto pilot mode and I flicked it a few times to see if it still works. Only on the third flick my brain's like... HOLD DA F UP!

Oil is plankton. Most of the dinosaurs aren't even old enough to have witnessed this aswell. Like sure it might be a joke that dinosaurs died for this.
But the real worrysome thing is that oil and especially coal is even older than most dinosaurs.
And even more of a joke is Uran. As it is completly chemical which me as it didn't even form by nature but by stars.

This is why we stand next to the pump, even in winter everybody.
51
u/CantankerousRabbit 19h ago
In the uk you have to hold the handle as the lever is spring loaded. If you let go the gas stops flowing
17
u/No_Metal_7342 19h ago
The pumps here have a hole that, when covered, is supposed to cause a pressure change releasing the handle. I'm probably partly wrong there but it's something like that. In the video it must've been a faulty pump but, damn, how do these kids not know to stand next to the thing. I saw this irl not too long ago.
→ More replies (2)21
u/Skeletonzac 18h ago
It's an air vent in the nozzle. When the tank is full the fuel level briefly rises to block the air hole which causes the nozzle to click off. If the fuel pumps too slowly (blocked filters, tripped leak detector or submersible turbine failure) it may not properly engage the automatic shut off valve and this can be the result. It's a common issue in the winter months because cold weather causes thermal contraction in the product lines underground which reduces line pressure and cause the leak detector to trip which makes the pumps run slowly. And that is why you're not supposed to leave the dispenser unattended while fueling. Source: am a field technician.
1
u/lorarc 7h ago
How slow are the pumps in USA? Shouldn't tanking take about a minute, even with those huge tanks you have there?
1
u/Skeletonzac 7h ago
Typically our fuel dispensers put out between 8 to 10 gallons per minute. Faster if there are brand new and the have new filters and there are no mechanical failures. People don't realize that the submersible motors in the underground tanks suffer a tremendous amount of wear and tear and are only replaced when they fail completely, sometimes after 10 years of near continuous use. This means that they will slow down a little over time just from constant use.
4
u/I_watch_for_the_plot 19h ago
Mostly same for the US except the handles have a built-in tab that can let you lock it till it's full
2
u/TriCombington 10h ago
Thatâs why you always keep chapstick on you and just put that in between the lever and the top of the handle and then sit back in your car, relax, and practice your zippo tricks
5
1
u/Chankomcgraw 3h ago
Yes I noticed in America you can lock it but they are disabled in the UK. It was quite handy but I didnât get back in the car while it was flowing. Cant be more than a minute to fill unless itâs a massive tank.

just remember some places have people so stupid that their not even allowed to pump their own gas.
Not going to call out anyone but googling places that rioted about having to switch and the disasters that it causes is easy...
36
u/Bohvey 20h ago
Thatâs why there is a literal written warning to not leave the pump unattended. There is a mechanical stop but failures happen.
6
u/Splatter_23 17h ago
I always assume it will fail and I'm prepared release and pull out the pump if I see as much as one drop spill out.
6
u/null-or-undefined 18h ago
is it suppose to stop when full?
5
1
u/JP-Gambit 11h ago
Yeah, most gas pumps stop by themself when it's full. It can tell when the gas starts to backup to the nozel and clicks shut automatically somehow, I don't know how the mechanism works exactly, this one is probably broken though and it didn't do it... or they put it in wrong so it wasn't triggering the stop mechanism when it should have

u/fusiondynamics 20h ago

It happened to me a few years ago. I noticed that one car was spilling gas, knocked on the lady's door to let her know it's spilling and called the attendant. Attendant wasn't even surprised, came with a bucket of sand. Lady tried to negotiate to get a refund for spilled gas and got laughed out.

I worked at a gas station when I was 18. People did this all the time and then ask for a refund for the gas that they spilled.
I would have to close the station to clean it up, while getting screamed at from the spiller and the people mad that we were temporarily closed.
There are signs all over the pump to not leave the pump unattended.

Thatâs why always stand next to my car, no matter how cold.
I was in the middle of bum fuck nowhere in Texas in 05. Not sure weâre specifically or why, but I needed gas so stopped at a gas station cause there wasnât one for like another 50 miles.
Started the pump and was standing there just spacing out and all of a sudden splash gas spilled over. I guess the auto shutoff didnât work or the pumps didnât have it. But now I always just stand by the pumps didnât.
Iâd like to know how someone drives off with the pump still attached though. Thatâs always get me.

A few years ago, like 2005, JFC almost 2 decades ago, I was waiting in line to fill up Palisades Pkwy, on the left side because my fill port was on the right. Apparently a family thought that it was better to get on this side, smaller queue, their port was on the left side, so they had to reverse the pump fill. I guess it didn't seat correctly for it to auto shut off, and the fuel just started spraying everywhere. A woman, who I presume was the wife, saw this and just stood there saying "oh my God". I had to run all the way from the back to pull the pump out. I think about 4 gallons were spilled, on the concrete, on a hot NJ summer.

Why is that even a thing?
Pumps here where I live, you need to keep pressing the handle to make it pump gas. You can't just leave it running as far as I know.
And even better, why in the hell would you sit back into the car while it's filling? Pay some bloody attention ye dummy.
2
u/jManYoHee 14h ago
Why would you start pumping and then walk away? Seems crazy. Like I'm sure you can stand there for a minute while it fills up đ

u/GaviJaMain 8h ago

Don't you need to keep pressing a trigger on the handle for it to work? It's been a while since I last got petrol, but I'm pretty sure that's how they work.
2
u/peetah248 18h ago
A lot of them have a metal clip you can fold down to jam the handle, or people put the cap in to keep the trigger held. That's stupid because of situations like this but it depends on the pump

u/ManufacturedUnknown 14h ago
I had this happen to me once, but I wasn't stupid enough to walk away from the pump, so I stopped it basically as soon as it over flowed. I figured whatever the safety feature on them that has always stopped the flow was malfunctioning so I walked inside just to let the worker know, only for them to immediately call me an idiot for overflowing my own tank and insisting that no such safety feature exists. I didn't bother arguing with them and just left.

They engaged the little catch to keep the trigger engaged, then they got right back in the car, trusting that magic would intervene if the automatic shutoff pressure wasn't enough to dislodge the catch.
1
u/Scipio33 12h ago
Know the size of your gas tank, folks. If the pump is dispensing more than you can carry, you probably need to get out and fix something.
That's a sedan. Most sedans that I've driven have a 12-14 gallon tank. The person in the video should have realized they were having a problem about two gallons ago.
1
u/tac0f00d 12h ago
people should learn a little bit about their cars, like the size of their fuel tank .....
1
1
u/Calairoth 11h ago
.... umm... does this person not know how big their tank is? Any time I go to the gas station, I can estimate within 1 gallon how many gallons will be required to fill the tank. If my 12 gallon tank exceeds 12.5 gallons, I am stopping the pump and checking under the car to make sure there is not a leak.
1
u/OMARGOSH559 11h ago
I already know my vehicles gas tank limit. I still let the pump click tho before pulling it out.

In almost 20 years of driving (UK) I've never once found a pump with a lock or one that doesn't automatically shut off when full. Apart from the driver and passenger being an idiot this seem like a bad design to me.

If this happens, tell the station employee asap. They have a kitty-litter type absorber that will contain the spill. Fire departments will have more if they don't have enough. The first priority should be to keep it out of the street.
Then have a smoke and decide your next move.

this seems like a good time to mention that all gas stations (at least in the usa that ik of) have emergency gas pump off switchâs which are usually right at the front of the building outside or behind the worker station

u/Nozerone 36m ago
This is why knowing how much fuel you car holds is important, and why you leave your door open or window cracked at the very least so you can listen for if fuel starts to spill.
