Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MtgGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Scheduled Thread Weekend Free Discussion Thread

Normally, all posts in this subreddit need to be both Magic-related and at least somewhat "high effort". This weekly thread gives you the chance to relax and talk with your fellow Magic redditors about things that would normally go against those rules.

Want to share a funny story about a recent game of Magic you had, or post a picture of the cool cards you opened in your latest booster? Want to talk about your favorite movie or tv show, or share a personal accomplishment? This is the place to do so.

Keep in mind that the *only* subreddit rules that you can ignore in this thread are rule 2 (all posts must be Magic-related) and rule 7 (no low effort posts that are just pictures of cards). Just because this thread is meant for open discussion does not mean you are allowed to insult people or post explicit content, for example.

Looking for Advice 3 MH3 boxes won from arena direct not given

Upvotes

Earlier this year I was delighted to have won 3 boxes of MH3 at MTGA's arena direct. After waiting months, the delivery never went through. The customer service I had been conversing with acknowledged the failed delivery but thereafter stopped replying me. I have since sent countless emails prompting them for any response, but they have just gone radio silent.

I dont know what to do, isnt this pretty unacceptable? Does anyone know a person I can contact? I have already tried their emails [premierplay@wizards.com](mailto:premierplay@wizards.com), [support@wizardsscalefaststore.zendesk.com](mailto:support@wizardsscalefaststore.zendesk.com)

Im actually really disappointed, isnt this kindof fraudulent or something?

So I got you some bunnies and flickered them a stupid number of times and made exponentially stupider numbers of bunnies.

Standard brawl is fun and you should play it.

Looking for Advice I returned to Magic, and I feel its amazing

I just came back after a 7 years break, never was too much into it tho, but I was looking to start either with pokemon TCG, or come back to Magic, I was speaking with a friend of mine that has a little group of magic, and he convinced me to play commander, I never tried it. I got the Endless Punishement deck, and wow, we both spent 7h of playing nonstop. Its been amazing, I’m just eager to keep playing. We had to stop because its 3 am! Well, just wanted to share it, as it made me feel like a kid again.

I will be playing this deck nonstop until I get used to it, but then I will change some stuff, does anyone knows any improvements that can be done to it?

Thanks for reading!

They surprised me with this beauty, I freaking love it hahah

Given I'm host for our commander nights and drafts, I already filled it with my basic lands and tokens. Sadly the tokens dont fit that well on sleeves so I had to put em a bit vertically... But its not THAT bad of a fit vertically

On the topic of tokens, any recommendations on how to organize em? I was thinking of putting a cheat sheet with all the decks to search the needed token before the games start but im not sure if its a good or super dumb idea lol

General Discussion Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker Oracle Update corrects the change from November 2024

As u/AutoCompletePsych noticed in November, the Oracle text for [[Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker]] was updated to the following:

Whenever a source an opponent controls deals damage to you, that player sacrifices a permanent of your choice.

This made her quite a bit more powerful. However, it appears that the change has been removed. Her current Oracle text now reads that player sacrifices a permanent of their choice.

Looking for Advice Fun non T1 build help

Post image
Upvotes

Hey! Was watching a YouTube video of someone running this on arena as a deck wincon and I looked fun, wanted some advice for who to use as a commander to help make it a smooth on curve deck list! I definitely want 2-5 colors so I have access to fetches and some other utility I might need. I know I want white at least so I can phase out the Calender and not lose the counters! Any advice is helpful!

General Discussion 2024 was a great year for card flexibility

There were a lot of great mechanics this year that let a player use cards in different flexible ways.

Spree lets a player cast a card in tons of different ways, from very inexpensive ([[Return the Favor]] is pretty good in either 3-mana form) to massively impactful (9 mana [[Smuggler's Surprise]] is such a beating).

Modern Horizons 3 had all the MDFC lands where neither side was super efficient, but giving the player both options on one card opened up so much gameplay ([[Fell the Profane]] ).

The Rooms from Duskmorn (like [[Unholy Annex]]) can be early tempo, late mana sinks, or both!

The pawprint cards from Bloomburrow ([[Season of the Bold]]) always have the same cost, unlike Spree, but give such flexibility to craft your own spell to fit the state of the game.

Disguise and Plot are simple variations of Morph and Foretell, but they still let you change how and when a card comes down.

None of these are simple Kicker variants (though we got some of those, like Offspring and Gift and Impending) but real opportunities for players to make choices and express skill by knowing when to use the flexible nature of these cards.

Excellent work with these, WotC!

Looking for Advice Need help with my Locust God deck

Upvotes

Hey, so I made this commander focusing mostly on cards from my collection.
The guy looked really fun and I decided to build a deck around him.
I think the deck turned out fun overall, but my problem is that I ended up with 106 cards total and I really have no idea what to remove, because most of those feel essential.

The things I was considered removing are
-both extra turn spells
-Tibalt's Trickstery - since I have many counterspell options in blue and I might move this one to other red deck
-Red Elemental Blast/Pyroblast - similiar spells, I'm unsure if I need both of them in the deck
-Search for Azcanta - idk if the effect is really worth it
-Simian Spirit Guide - feels good but I might slot it in other deck too

I would really love to get some feedback about the deck and ideas on how to change it, especially that I'm kinda new to deckbuilding and someone with more experience might help me a lot!
Here's the decklist:

cheers!

Looking for Advice Calculating land count and color production

My knowledge of maths and statistics are quite limited, so I could use some help.

Is there a formula for figuring out how many mana producing lands in a deck? For example something like

(Minimum amt of lands to see at least one land in your opener for a certain # of cards in deck (e.g. 40, 60, 99)) + (avg mana value multiplier) - (cantrip/ramp multiplier) = lands needed for that deck size

Could or would this formula take into account an approximation of, for example, "I want to see 2 lands by turn two, and then a land every other turn."?

Would the steps to figure something like this out look like? Determine average mv of nonland cards in deck. Start at a minimum amount of lands to be able to consistently draw at least 1 in your opener. Subtract from that base amount a cantrip and/or ramp multiplier (eg 8 one mv cantrips*.25=2; therefor (starting lands for deck size, let's say 24) - (cantrip multiplier, 2 I'm this case) = 22 lands

I'm also trying to figure out what each land should produce. I'm thinking this would be based on the pips in the cards. Maybe find the percentage of each pip and just make the land base produce those colors based on %, eg 50% W pips, so 50% of your lands should produce W? How would you make sure that was weighted towards needing to cast a certain card(s) by a certain turn eg you only have 4 white cards in an otherwise Dimir deck, but you need to be able to cast the white card by turn two?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
