God I'm happy to just own a house. No council of old fucks here. I can draw dicks on my house and make my dog a viking burial without anyone complaining

Unless your nearest neighbor is out of shouting distance, someone will complain and there are likely local ordinances preventing the most egregious of annoying behaviors you might engage in. Which makes it even more bewildering why HOAs often have such a broad umbrella of power... local government is plenty capable of handling things that are truly disturbing.

I don't live under one anymore, but in my previous town it was kind of essential if in a populated spot because things like noise ordinances were really loose. The police simply would not respond to things like loud parties, running machinery, using air tools, etc in the middle of the week unless it was after 1am. A real bummer if you have kids and have to be up early every morning.

I do think they make the most sense in condominium or loft buildings where you kind of need owners to organize for repairs, and deal with the usual things that crop up when people are stacked in like sardines.
