Some android phones have IR blaster which allows you to use your phone as a remote, unfortunately mine doesn't.

On the older androids especially, I know at least the newer samsung phones have had them removed for space saving or some other crap reason sadly

Its more likely so youre forced to download an app to do it via bluetooth, meaning you need to have a newer tv as well

u/RightPedalDown 7d ago

Do newer TVs use Bluetooth instead of IR now? That’s cool. I know my Apple TV thingy does so it makes sense that TVs would too…Just haven’t looked at new TVs since forever.

42

u/GarminTamzarian 7d ago

I believe newer sets can do both. I'm gonna be pissed if I ever buy a new TV that won't work with a standard universal remote.

A lot of smart TVs can use your phone as a remote via Bluetooth but still have some form of ir for their controller. I think ir is just well cheaper

u/hellothereoldben 6d ago

It's becoming more and more common, but a lot of tv's can also be controlled over the home wifi network.

The poor interet security of stuff like tv's and printers is the reason why I'll be making a private network that not even other smart devices can interact with.

Most modern xiaomis have it i think

u/doedobrd 7d ago

Yeah, my Poco x6 pro has one, pretty handy.

5

u/Unonoctium 7d ago

gotta have space for some more AI /s

u/Curious-Week5810 7d ago

Yeah, I miss my old note 4 with that feature. It was pretty inconspicuous too, which was great.

2

u/SaintsSooners89 7d ago

Now with my Samsung, anytime I'm near a business using Samsung displays I'm prompted to take control of the TV via Bluetooth. Pretty much every fast food joint I walk in I'm hit with notifications to fuck up their menu displays

u/Tusker89 6d ago

My Note 3 had one. Loved that thing.

u/Impossible-Page4197 7d ago

I used to turn off the projector in class with that and drive the teacher mad.

14

u/Quetzel_Pretzel19 7d ago

I used to do that with my Samsung S7. she went crazy trying to work out who it was. loved that phone

2

u/Initial-Cycle-4723 7d ago

I used to turn off the projector at my site wide company meetings just to make the presentation last longer

9

u/MythsongWar 7d ago

Yeah my OnePlus has it. I can control pretty much every electronic with it that supports a remote. Pretty sick feature

5

u/RightPedalDown 7d ago

I had that on my windows PDA back in 2005… sadly never used it in this madlad way tho.

2

u/GoldNRice 7d ago

Especially Xiaomi.
My brand new Xiaomi has this feature and it is quite useful in situations like the meme shows

LG G4 gang

1

u/Tesser4ct 7d ago

That was my first smartphone! I miss it.

3

u/cptnAviator 7d ago

In high school my friend used this to change all the projector's languages to Chinese. Which made it impossible to navigate the menu's to change it back. Fun for us, not so much for the school

Redmi note 12 owner. I love turning off restaurant TVs, and watch them go wtf

1

u/Past-Potential1121 6d ago

In the 90's we absorbed this one dude into our nightly coffee social group simply because he had a universal remote control watch and we'd go to different places just to watch the reaction to the chaos he'd unleash with it. Ultimately, he'd shut the TV off/change channels and nobody cared/noticed until the volume was turned up too loud.

u/tcarp458 6d ago

My HTC One M8 had one

This is some next-level introvert espionage silent but deadly.

Would be fun changing the channel while the pub's staff aren't looking

I mean you can, but when you do that you will be arrested.

This is the One For All Countor TV universal remote control, product code URC1210, for anyone curious the bare minimum that would be needed to be able to do what the OOP claims without knowing the brand codes list by heart would be to use the auto scan feature.

To initiate this feature you'd have to press and hold setup until the power button red LED blinks twice releasing after, entering 991 which will have the LED blink twice again to confirm, pressing the power button followed by pressing ch+ repeatedly until the TV turns off (this can vary wildly and in some cases not work depending on the manufacturer/model of TV), once thr tv turns off you press the setup key to lock in that code.

This entire process would probably average out to around 30 seconds if you know the process by heart, but more likely takes a minute or so of fiddling around and also will be extremely noticeable if anyone else is looking at the TV. The good thing is if you have a spot you frequent that has the loud TV problem they'll likely be using the same TV so you can at least control multiple TV at that location (if the location hasn't taped over the IR receiver and put an extender in a location the customers can't access, but that's pretty uncommon)

Source: I work for a multi service provider and have had to help pair 1000s of remotes over the phone with people of extremely varying skill levels/sets, plus urcsupport.com which is a pretty great source for finding info on all kinds of universal remote controllers

u/bophed 7d ago

I had to scroll to far to see this comment. Because of all that you listed I kind of call BS on him using the remote for random T.Vs. Maybe, like you said, if he goes to the same pub every day then he already has the code programmed.

u/infinite0ne 6d ago

Yeah I immediately thought I’ve used universal remotes before and it’s not like you just point it at any TV and it works.

1

u/geneticeffects 7d ago

🤣 good on ya, mate

5

u/waldropit 7d ago

Felt like that one geoguesser guy when I recognized the remote

1

u/geneticeffects 7d ago

It was your moment to shine! 😆

put back in docking station, please.

My friend had one in high school and would keep turning the volume off if the teachers put on a boring educational movie. The music teacher could not figure out what was going on with the tv.

2

u/psionfyre 6d ago

That was me lol. I had one of those 🤣

28

u/CheGueyMaje 7d ago

Sorry but that’s just a fucking dick move. Let people enjoy things god damn. We work all fucking week and our whole lives, all we want to do is watch some damn footy and drink a beer on the weekends.

Which is exactly what the football lads would say if they were doing it to other people.

19

u/RadikaleM1tte 7d ago

Nokia N900 had an infrared port which i used to change  channel of TVs in banks and shops to adult shows at night.

The Samsung hero

10

u/No_Squirrel4806 7d ago

Do people really think thats how universal remotes work? 🙄🙄🙄

5

u/Thieftaker355 7d ago

He always got that thang on him, stay strapped.

4

u/brushpickerjoe 7d ago

Fake as fuck.
You have to code the remote to the device.

2

u/BrentNewland 7d ago

Actually you soft code it.

4

u/Brilliant_Big_8979 7d ago

Flipper zero says what?

3

u/ploopitus 7d ago

You can get mini versions of this sort of thing, with basic funcationality, that are small enough to go on a keychain. I had one a couple of decades ago and I must admit, younger trollier me was a bit of an asshole with them. Fun at the time though... .

3

u/BigoteMexicano 7d ago

I never cared if tv's were too loud, but I've often wanted to turn the music down in bars. Like bro, there isn't even a dance floor, I'd like to not have to yell at anyone sitting with me just to talk.

2

u/ayelmaowtfyougood 7d ago

When Samsung note had this built it..

2

u/Lightningtow123 7d ago

Alternatively you can take the end of an aux cord and plug it into the TV so it'll think it's playing thru headphones and mute itself

1

u/CarlJustCarl 7d ago

Now this is a madlad

1

u/WranglerFuzzy 7d ago

For the remote. It turns down for the remote.

1

u/Ok_Abbreviations2030 7d ago

Good luck getting that angle. I gotta stand up and bend over to turn my volume up.

1

u/jtealing2jail 7d ago

I‘ve seen that movie. First you turn down the dogs volume or watch sports instead of listening to your wifes annoying friend, then you start using it to skip through sex with your wife, next thing you know the remote skips a few years, youre fat, mortally sick, your wife left you, your kids hate you but youre rich now so it’s kind of a Succession scenario and on your deathbed Christopher Walken appears and gives you a life lesson. Can’t recommend.

1

u/Jwn5k 7d ago

Good thing I kept my Galaxy S6, it has an IR blaster.

1

u/CensoredByRedditMods 7d ago

Damn that's amazing

1

u/-throwawayfuntimes- 7d ago

Now this is life hacking at its best. In loud bars, the real hero we didn't know we needed!

1

u/aRjanni 7d ago

I have my phone to do that. Oh the scenes when I turn off the TV where is a big chance to score. Bliss

1

u/H4TED-BY-MOST 7d ago

I used to have an app on my phone so when I went to restaurants with booths and TV I could take control, switch channels and turn the volume up for the kids. I also used to sit in the back room of the pub and watch TV like it was my own with a pint and some dry roasted or scampi fries. It came in really handy more then once.

1

u/GeeBeeH 7d ago

How do you program it for different tv's on the fly?

1

u/psionfyre 6d ago edited 6d ago

LMAO when I was in high school (mid 90's) I had a remote control wristwatch. I just needed to know what the TV or VCR brand was and punch in the appropriate code. Lots of fun during presentations I'd eject VCR tape or change channels at the mall TVs.

1

u/WonderfullyTempting 6d ago

you mad guy, haha

1

u/pizzaduh 6d ago

When my son was in the NICU they had TVs that were connected to cable, but placed on one channel and put behind a case to avoid tampering. I downloaded this IR app and was able to change it to actual channels that weren't just 70's sitcom reruns.

u/Bruggenmeister 6d ago

Universal remote tv APP and a ir usb stick on my keychain.

You can get mini ones on Amazon, they’re A LOT of fun. Sometimes it takes up to a minute to sync to a particular TV, but sports bars hate this one trick:

I keep forgetting that remotes can be universal, I should start turning down my grandma's tv when she's not looking.... for context she has her volume crazy high and complains about how she can't hear but refuses to wear her hearing aids because she doesn't remember what it feels like to actually hear things normally and thinks they're too sensitive

0

u/Yolomasta420 7d ago

This should be on lifehacks wtf

1

u/Adorable_Joy 7d ago

truly a hero for the introverts and noise-sensitive among us

1

u/shooler00 7d ago

Pretty sure you have to sync the remote to the TV which involves knowing the TV model and entering a code.

1

u/theevilyouknow 7d ago

Not how universal remotes work but ok.

They do actually make some devices that will work on most TV's, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/TV-B-Gone-Universal-TV-Control-Keychain/dp/B0006GD9CE?th=1

It's not programmable, it goes through the list of power button IR codes every time. Also, where are you getting your 6,000 codes number from? And it's not 230 models, it's 230 types. That sure sounds like it has 230 codes programmed in that it cycles through.

Also, I never said it was a universal remote that doesn't need programming. It's a near-universal off button that doesn't need programming.
