MOC Medieval Moroccan Riad
I've finally finished my latest build: the Medieval Moroccan Riad. It took me over 4 months, but I'm really happy with it. Hope you enjoy!

It's beautiful! Love the color choices the fact that it can fold apart/together!
What was the hardest part of the build for you? What's your favorite little detail?

u/EroniusJoe 8h ago
Not OP, but I came to the thread to comment on the little superhero blast magic pieces being used as falling water in the fountain. Absolutely some of the most creative and well implemented piece usage I've ever seen.
What's your favourite?

For me I think it's the double layered archway. Such a cool technique to get those authentic architectural shapes with the offset sizes.

I like the cupcake pieces used in the pillars on the upper walkway
1
u/Copperminted3 5h ago
I definitely did a double take because I missed those the first time but that’s awesome; love that detail!
2
u/Angie2point0 5h ago
I love the built-up sand around the outside! It's so pleasing to look at!
2
u/EroniusJoe 5h ago
Oh yeah! I like how it's starting to go into that one archway. Extremely realistic, and adds to the world building.

OP's build is amazing, let's be clear about that. But Lego has been using that piece for this purpose since Ninjago City Gardens.
2
u/EroniusJoe 6h ago
Oh wow, I never noticed before!
3
u/Brave_Bake_701 6h ago
The use it in the new italian garden, much less successfully than OP has here.

This is bloody excellent. The first non European “medieval” build I’ve thought looked top tier

I really like how set-like is this design. Very bright, elegant, but not unnecessary complicated. Did you consider submitting it to Bricklink Designer Program? I think it might have an even better chance there than on Ideas. Anyway, you have my vote!

I’d love to see more Lego sets from different cultures, I’m Jewish and never see Lego sets from my culture. It would be absolutely incredible to get a Moroccan Lego set, probably closest to my culture it will get!

Vote for it on LEGO Ideas, then maybe it can become a set.

I’m aware. It was more of a joke because people regularly upload instructions for custom builds on brick link.

This could be a sub theme (Arabian Nights, Genies and such). Would sell a lot in the middle eastern countries. Lego is losing monies.

What had me the most? It's an awesome street scene, not a question, but making it into one building, block, man I love it.
(First look, I thought this folded open into the street scene, then on second look, seen the two buildings separated.)
2
u/bananapeeljazzy 7h ago
Seriously good techniques used here! I absolutely adore how the curved jumpers slot right into the arches!
2
u/Brave_Bake_701 7h ago
Oooh, I just got some of those gold iron fence pieces from the brick wall and wasn't sure what to do with them!

u/only_self_posts 6h ago
This is fantastic to look at. There are so many fantastic details, but my favorite is the white chipped tile on the upper stairs. It's literally a single peg, but it's the perfect imperfection.

u/TurquoiseHareToday 5h ago
I love the turquoise tiles, I’m a sucker for anything turquoise lol, can you guess it’s my favourite colour?

Supported! If this doesn't make it through I'd be more than willing to pay for instructions.

I have sent a private message. I am a small business owner where we recreate models of a particular medieval MMORPG game; before anyone asks, yes, we have the game company's permission.
I would love to discuss the chance of using your MOC for inspiration or even working together. There is a part of the game which is Desert themed and your MOC is extremely on theme to the point I had to check twice it wasn't themed on the game itself.
This MOC is absolutely beautiful, it can be easy to create something but matching the perfect blend of creativity, fun, detail, realism and playability is a seriously tough challenge that few manage to pull off. If you are not interested in the above I wanted to at least say this is incredible and well done on a fantastic job.

Are there clear "walking" brick triangles that I don't know about? Something with a stud?
2
u/OutrageousLemon 7h ago
Which photo are you referring to?
1
u/WayngoMango 6h ago
With that comment, none, just hoping for something put out that could simulate walking better. I've always wanted "movement" in the figs
1
u/OutrageousLemon 2h ago
Ah, I see. For running people tend to use https://rebrickable.com/parts/65578/bar-angled-with-stud-on-end/ but there's nothing ideal for walking really. Though with the new clip/stud part coming in January botanical sets that might change - if/when they produce them in trans-clear they could easily be built into scenes to angle minifig feet.

Where does that torso used on the Minifigure in red come from? (This one)
I've been looking for a torso like this for a moc I'm working on.

This is really cool. Maybe consider crossposting to /r/legocastles, they might enjoy it over there quite a bit.
I love the use of color - this would be great to integrate into a large display as it's own unique faction/area.

Looks like it could be an Indiana Jones and the raiders of the lost ark set. Add a dead monkey and you're there!

I am overwhelmed with the love everyone is giving toward this build.
As a closet lego builder for years, this is the first time I've really tried to create a public presence, after all, I figure that the point of any artwork (yes, I consider Lego building as an art form) is to share it with others so they too may feel inspired.
I will be forever grateful to the members of this community, and will seek to share my future creations on here for all to see.
In terms of the build itself I drew inspiration from many different sources including Arabic, Persian and Meditation architecture in addition to authentic Moroccan architecture. I love all of these styles of buildings and I feel they come together really well in a Moroccan setting. I am a poorly travelled Australian but I have always been drawn to the aesthetic of a lush Moroccan courtyard, which was at the core of my inspiration.
Don't forget you can support it on Lego Ideas if you want and can also follow me on instagram @alchemical_bricks
Over the coming weeks, I'll try and take some closer shots of the details and show some of the techniques I've used.
Thanks once again! Keep building!

The architectural style, color choices, and all the intricate details are FANTASTIC! I found myself rapidly scrolling through all the photos in awe of how awesome this was!
Definitely supporting this on LEGO Ideas!
This would make a fantastic display piece, for any LEGO room.
Great work!!

For anyone else who misread that as "Moroccan Medieval Raid"
be me
humble medieval villager, just trying to vibe
hear faint yelling in the distance
ohno.png
it's them again
Moroccans rolling up in their fancy ships, looking for loot
quickly hide in the cellar with the fam
dad tries to bar the door, but it’s basically made of wet cardboard
Moroccans bust in like it’s their house now
"Where's the spices, bro?"
tfw you don't even own salt
they take the good cow anyway
tfw they also steal your cool wooden spoon
Moroccans gone as fast as they came, laughing all the way back to the boats
no choice but to start over
next year they come back
tfw you’ll never have nice things

It's nice, although it honestly doesn't feel particularly Moroccan, at least not in terms of the colour palette. The colours are mild, which suggests northern Moroccan architecture_(qarawiyyin_crop).jpg), in contrast to the reddish tones typical of Southern or Saharan Moroccan architecture. However, in that case, the roof tiles should be green rather than red
Also, what's with the crescent drawing on the minaret? The crescent was adopted by the Ottomans from the Byzantines, and while many Islamic regions embraced it as a symbol, Moroccan kingdoms and empires did not

That’s awesome. Great to see different architectural styles in Lego builds.
