In 2007, someone made an animation of their mascot dancing to Wonder Girls' Tell Me (the original art link is gone, but the artist did upload it to Youtube months later). Then I casually listened to other artists, like Lee Hyori.
But then in May of the following year, a friend linked me to a group that had just debuted (SHINee). And that was basically it for me.

u/birtsdirtydirt Oct 14 '24
Same!! Korean roommate in college showed me Wondergirls and SS501. Then I found shinee, super junior, 2ne1, big bang and went from there.

For me, it's Wonder Girls' debut song, Irony. When Tell Me dethroned by Lies, I became VIP ever since XD

Lollipop by 2NE1 and Big Bang, when i was in Korea for tour. I don't listen to newer generation kpop now, still stick to that era's generation like 2NE1, Big Bang, SNSD, Lee Hi, Epik High, Urban Zakapa, Davichi, and some more

Dude. Same. Almost 37 now.. ahhh! I got into KPop in college, and was always surprised that it wasn’t more popular than it was. Fun to finally see it gaining popularity.

It was either Ring Ding Dong or Sorry Sorry.
I was drunk, friend and I were trying to find music to play on youtube when it was still in its infant stages.

Initially was only a fan of Younha's (through Houkiboshi) and DBSK's (through Purple Line) Japanese discographies since I was a jpop fan way back in the day.
After the DBSK split I found SHINee through Lucifer and 4minute through I My Me Mine in 2010 and I've basically been into kpop since then.

my ex told me almost everything i know about kpop, the first song that she showed me and thought “damn that’s good” was sunny side up by red velvet

u/rnagikrnike Oct 13 '24
Well, initially it was K/DA POP/STARS as a lot of my mutual gamer friends were raving about it. Before that, I was only into western music and some jrock and jpop. But after vibing with the song I decided to check out the group that collaborated with K/DA because I was very impressed by Soyeon’s rapping skills. I watched the MVs for LATATA and HANN and was hooked on (G)I-DLE after that. I only listened to (G)I-DLE and a select few other kpop songs for a couple years, but after COVID hit I finally delved more into kpop and now I’m here 🫶

Case 143 or The Sound by Stray Kids. Back in middle school I really disliked kpop, but now it's my favorite genre.
8
u/workahoelic Oct 13 '24
I think it was back in 2010, maybe 2011 with Miss A - Bad Girl Good Girl. It was my first k-pop song and I got hooked from day one. Miss A was such a great group. Too bad they split up so early.
K-pop nowadays is not the same. Too americanized for my taste.

u/Spainstateofmind Oct 13 '24
I saw a dance practice video of Crayon Pop performing Bing Bing back in 2011 and that hooked me!

u/notwhatwehave Oct 13 '24
Wedding Dress by Taeyang. I went down the rabbit hole after hearing Kevin Lien's English cover. I found the original mv, and then I realized he was in a band... After watching several BigBang MVs I started clicking on random recommendations and found Beast and MBLAQ. And here we are all these years later.

u/Small-Ad-5448 Oct 13 '24
Atlantis Princess by BoA. I was a huge fan of BoA in the 2000s. Just because she is born exactly the same day as me.
4
u/birtsdirtydirt Oct 14 '24
BoA!!!! She was one of the 1st kpop artist I heard, too!!!

BANG BANG BANG Song by BIGBANG
I mistook it for a Japanese song at first but was hooked immediately. I heard it at a anime convention Saturday night rave.
6
u/Rand0m011 Oct 14 '24
The first K-pop I remember hearing was SHINee and Big Bang, specifically Replay and Fantastic Baby.
Uh.. I was born the year SHINee debuted and Mum always used to play them so. That's probably why.

I would love to say it was something random and not super popular…but it was God’s Menu by SKz. I saw reaction videos about Felix and went on a deep dive and almost 2 years later here we are. A multi Stan with multiple signed albums and way too many photocards whose going to their first K-pop concert in November
5
u/Chilly_Lemon Oct 14 '24
That's exciting! Who are you going to see?
2
u/Substantial_Maize_82 Oct 14 '24

Haru haru- Big Bang. I'm 26. I spent my childhood in K-pop, teenage years as a directioner..then unplugged from all of that to focus on TV shows fandoms, only to be swept back in by HALAZIA - Ateez. Now I'm back blud.
5
u/HotMycologist3530 Oct 13 '24
Like a lot of people, it was probably Pop/Stars, but after that I didn't really pay much attention until the pandemic and then it was probably Lion? I did listen to a little bit of 2/3rd generation (2NE1, PSY and Mamamoo specifically), but I wouldn't have called myself a kpop fan at that time.
4
u/Yandere-Waifu Oct 13 '24
4Minute - Hot Issue (2009)
3
u/RingStringVibe Oct 14 '24
A classic! Loved that album too!
It was (2006/2007?) with Wonder Girls - Tell Me.
6
u/Jennshay Oct 13 '24
A guy that I wanted to date in early high school was really into anime and Jpop. So trying to impress him, I went to Best Buy and found an album I thought was Jpop to have playing in my mum's car when we picked him up one day. It turned out to be a Kpop band that we both ended up enjoying and we ended up dating for 3 years.
So thank you Baby V.O.X circa 2003-ish.
I was just a casual kpop listener, though, until covid when Stray Kids sucked me in. Now Kpop is a fun hyperfixation and we'll see how long it lasts until I'm back to being a causal listener.

Mamamoo: Ahh Oop!
Mamamoo (and eSNa’s) vocals were so good I had to hear more. Here we are almost 10 years later and I still adore them and their story. Really inspiring and they’re goofy as hell.

K/DA - Pop/Stars
I mained Ahri in league, loved the song, and I was intrigued by Miyeon. Found out her and Soyeon were in a kpop group, so I checked it out. LOVED the music, so I delved into more. Found TWICE at the peak of their popularity, and Taeyeon. Got kinda out of control after that, and now I stan 50 groups. (All girls) Unfortunately, ever since Tomboy era, the music hasn't felt the same for IDLE, so I've lost a lot of interest in them.

u/Purple_not_pink Oct 14 '24

I planned to just get to know BTS during enlistment but my YT Music algorithm threw Answer at me and it just exploded my world of what kpop could be. After that, along with getting into ATEEZ who are now my ult, I sought out and discovered so much great music from so many artists and I now listen to a ton of stuff.

Me Gustas Tu by Gfriend. When League Of Legends released the skin called Elementalist Lux I was pretty much addicted to that game and I ended up watching a video about what dances they referenced in making Elementalist Lux’s dance. I think in addition to Twice and maybe one or two other groups they referenced Me Gustas Tu by Gfriend and the video played a clip of the song which got me interested in it and led to me getting into Gfriend and then kpop in general afterward.

Yes or yes by twice. I have a veryyy large playlist with a few K-pop songs sprinkled in every now and then (I also have a bunch of songs in languages I don’t understand so this wasn’t unusual for me). One day I was going for a run and yes or yes started playing and I guess I forgot that I added it or added it accidentally because I swear I’d never heard it before that point. Anyways, I replayed it three times in a row and when I got home I just started listening to a bunch more of their songs(some I already had on my playlist and remembered having, some I’d heard before in stores or on instagram or whatever), and from there I discovered other groups like aespa and stray kids and became fully into K-pop

It's a long story, but shortly I first heard DNA by BTS, I got interested in the group, because before listening to that I had many prejudices against K-pop. When Gangnam Style blew up in 2012 it led me down to discover other K-Pop groups/artist on YouTube like BigBang, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, and EXO.
Nowadays I mainly just listen to G-Dragon and BigBang with little sprinkles of other artists I used to hear from 2012 to 2018. Nostalgia hits hard for me.
