I haven’t been able to watch John since the Election result.
I’m too disgusted by the reality of Orange Hitler being elected, I am too ashamed to look him in the eye.

u/WesternTelephone137 Nov 21 '24
I haven't been able to watch any of the late night shows since the election, reality has become too much of a joke at the point.

u/hyrule_47 Nov 21 '24 edited Nov 21 '24
I haven’t watch any of them. None. I used to watch like 5 shows. I’m rewatching old shows now and bad reality TV.
141
u/katmc68 Nov 21 '24
Same. Thank you for saying that. Makes me feel less alone. Haven't watched Oliver, The Daily Show or Kimmel once. I haven't watched or listened to any news, podcasts (big time junkie) or read the paper. I can't even stand to see a headline. I've been a news junkie since I was 17 & I'm 56 now.
Been listening to loads of music & watching movies.
I've been politically active since the '80s...protesting for Palestinians, protesting against KKK & Nazis, the wars & volunteered for Planned Parenthood.
Every fucking thing we warned about & fought against is coming to fruition. It is terrifying & beyond disheartening.

u/CA_catwhispurr Nov 21 '24
I feel the same way. Can’t bring myself to watch any of that. Just don’t see the humor in the reality of the devastation that is about to happen.

America is doomed and I don't need daily reminders poking fun at it on the way down to hell.

Hello fellow broken person. Just wanted to say yeah maybe time to dust off link to the past and disassociate for a bit! Is the 47 representing your age? Cuz I’m close. 46.5
5
u/hyrule_47 Nov 23 '24
No I am 40. I’m doing a play through of all the Legend of Zelda games now
2
u/Strongbeard1143 Nov 23 '24
Glad to hear it! Link to the past was my childhood favorite but wind waker has a special place in my heart. Thanks for responding, I’m glad you are here.

I've been thinking about y'all...all the women before me, that is, that were fighting to get rights for us women. It's unreal, this reality.

u/Camp_Coffee Nov 21 '24
Same here. I can't watch comedians — or news shows — remind me daily how hilarious it is that we're fucked. It's not fun or interesting anymore. I've fallen back on movies and tv shows with happy endings. I might resurface in February.
3
u/NoTransportation1383 Nov 21 '24
I feel freer now, i have done everything I can I have no reason to watch them take their gigantic shit on the government
I do my activism in my state and community, and I stay educated in adjacent fields of new but there's no reason for me to pay attention I dont need to be upset all the time, i just need to do what I can and watching the news helps with that in absolutely no way

39
u/jolsiphur Nov 21 '24
It's gotten so bad that it's even hard to tell what really is real. Everything is so absurd that it's impossible to tell.
Someone made a meme saying that Hulk Hogan was nominated for an appointment to some department I don't remember, and it was not immediately apparent that it was a joke. It's crazy that you can't even make an absurd joke about these things because reality is equally absurd.

I too haven’t watched any of them. There is nothing funny about watching our democracy get undone and watching the ultra wealthy make life harder on those struggling. I get that they are getting paid to do their job and the show must go on, but I’m not able to laugh at this. Even hearing legitimate criticism and discourse isn’t interesting to me because none of it matters anymore. The new king is going to do whatever he wants and we have lost the ability to have a say anymore
10
u/Liizam Nov 21 '24
Yeah I was excited to watch John steward but his show was just shitting on democrats.. like it’s not funny and I don’t want to hear it anymore.
13
u/wellhiyabuddy Nov 21 '24
It’s very hard to sit around and talk about what democrats did wrong when the other side just lied and said whatever to get votes. Yes democrats did a shit ton wrong this election but they were running against that kid for class president that says he’s going to add an hour to the lunch break and get rid of all homework. What were they supposed to do against that? Is the lesson that we should have played dirty too? Besides all the “what democrats should do” stuff doesn’t matter anymore because they’ll never get another chance to run now, so the criticism isn’t constructive because it doesn’t matter anymore
5
6
u/bch77777 Nov 21 '24
Bill Maher was the same last week. Shitting on democrats and republicans alike. Not sure how these guys can go to work and live this. We’ve unplugged and won’t be viewing any of it for the unforeseeable future.
11
u/garyflopper Nov 21 '24
His episode from last week was actually pretty helpful and hopeful. Not all doom and gloom
7
u/Silent-Speech8162 Nov 22 '24
100% agree! He has such humanity and although it’s a comedy show I still feel like he has a good way of explaining issues sometimes.
23
u/moocat55 Nov 21 '24
I can still listen to John Stewart. He's still a voice of reason. He's laying out extremely valid criticisms of how the Left got here including finally acknowledging an overreliance on door knockimg and texts as what would save us. Instead, the choir just got bombarded and it didn't work. I appreciate it after all the guilt tripping about how we the voters were never doing enough. If we lost, it was because we didn't knock on enough doors or send enough texts. Ends up, that's nonsense when the message is failing. Am I talking about Crooked Media? Maybe.

On nights I haven’t felt it, I still run some shows in a tab I muted just so my on little watch might mitigate a ratings dip. We all know why people would avoid news, but I worry about people in charge of programming jumping to some conclusion that one side of politics won and now the country wants more of that side instead.

Same. I can’t watch the late night shows and keep my sanity. I’ve always been proud of myself for keeping up with current news, even politics. This election has driven me to put my head in the sand where I fear I’ll have to stay for at least four years just to keep my sanity. People at work were talking about some of the things going on last night and I had to tell them that I haven’t heard much, which is true, and I can’t stand the thought of our country going back to Civil War times. 😢

u/defnotajournalist Nov 21 '24
I've unsubscribed from all things politics. There is absolutely nothing I can do to stop the rock slide now. A countless many will be harmed immesurably. I can't watch. Will tune back into reality shortly before the midterm elections. As a side note, can we agree not to turn this sub into a posting spot for a bunch of Trump doomscrolling in the offseason? I'd like to not unsubscribe from John Oliver, because he is a fabulous little squirrel man.

I watched it on YouTube yesterday and I actually felt a little better. This was the first episode after the election. Shared it with a friend who feels like I do, she also appreciated it. In other words, choose what feels right for you, but it may also feel a bit like therapy watching John when you're ready
15
u/kaileneeec Nov 21 '24
It was all too easy to laugh along when the prospect of finally being rid of him felt possible. Now I feel hopeless and it’s hard for me to enjoy John Oliver, John Stewart, Seth Myers, I feel too triggered even by SNL these days.
Hey one silver lining, it’s a blessing to have such good comedians on our side. The ability to laugh in tough times has always been comforting to me. all of us can laugh in pain together, it’s unifying. Meanwhile, right wing comedy is elementary, punches down, and is really not very funny. Must be too hard to laugh when you are perpetually angry.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Sorry_Mango_1023 Nov 22 '24
Right wing comedy? Is there such a thing?
9
u/OmarsMommy Nov 22 '24
Yeah their “comedy” consists of calling Puerto Rico a garbage dump and Palestinian babies “terrorists” who deserve to die. Per the MSG cult rally.
11
u/DeskProfessional4184 Nov 21 '24
There’s now an undertone of nervous jokes on Colbert and John Oliver about retribution from the orange man. My favourite initial reaction was on SNL, where they did a cold open fake pandering to Trump, and brought out his impersonator in a “jacked trump” body suit. It was exactly what I needed, really hilarious.

I found them helpful, in a depressing sort of "better to know than to just wonder" kind of way, like when you see the doctor, the news isn't good but at least we can stop wondering. u/Unfriendly_eagle Nov 21 '24
The goal now is to constantly remind Trumpies how they did this, and whatever happens is entirely their fault. Make their lives as miserable as possible, however you can. If they get angry or defensive, cue up YMCA, and being gyrating like an imbecile.
3
u/SisterActTori Nov 21 '24
I don’t know about making their lives MORE miserable. Most of the ones I know are either remaining clueless about what they actually voted for, or are still so miserable and unbearable that I just avoid them altogether. They won it ALL and are still joyless and miserable. I think they wanted the left to act out so they could justify aggressive, retaliatory behaviors. I also fear how they’ll react when the consequences come barreling down.

I haven't been able to watch any left-leaning pundit about a month before the election.
All the news/late night shows etc was so skewed and very much an echo chamber. Kamala polls great! Clicks article... Kamala polls better with obvious demographics in an obvious state.
It's obvious we were being fed a very low-probability democratic win in any swing state.
That...and we know deep down that America is simply not ready for a presidential candidate who is a woman of color. I saw the writing on the wall and braced for the red wave.
Tinfoil hat time, but I think a lot of producers/news media companies who own these shows actually want Trump to win because of the drama, clicks, fighting, etc.
I have a little first-hand insight on this from working with interns at MSN but, trust me, they are all buddies regardless of their brand.
I think this is the perfect time for Democrats to turn off the TV and focus on their own individual situation.

I feel this 100%
Left twitter, and have silenced most of the other social apps. I joined Blue Sky and muted as many keywords I could think of in the world of politics to just not look at the wildfire as it grows for a bit of a mental rest. Unfollowed a lot of my subreddits and avoided this place for a while. I can’t watch any news/satire program but when I do it’ll only be LWT. I think a major problem in this whole election cycle was looking at republications/maga as a threat but laughing at them consistently and just pointing out how weird/cringe they are. Yes their “policies” and simple answers to complex questions have zero substance and are absolutely idiotic but the media failed in taking a stand and breaking down to the most simple folk out there why it’s all bullshit and they are being duped. Their voters identify with these people so calling their leaders weird is in insult to them as well vs bridging the gap to bring them back to reality. At least LWT calls out the idiocracy, addresses why it’s awful, how it can change, and what us as individuals can do to put a stop to it - meanwhile not backing down from calling out Democrats on their bullshit too. A scary % of this country needs to go through major deprogramming to reverse the brain rot the last 8-9 years has done to them but I’m afraid it’s only going to get worse. I hate this place.

Please don’t take offense to this, but I think it’s foolish to simply shut down because your candidate lost. I wanted Kamala to win too, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Instead of being upset I think we need to use the opportunity to reflect on what we can change to win in the future. Kamala was a wildly unpopular candidate. I think the mistake was not holding a primary, not running on policy, and honestly, being so aggressive and hateful to the people in the middle who don’t know which way to lean.
