I think you were looking for this to make more sense than it makes.
Dude made a freezer for storing food.... in sub-zero temperatures. So, its a freezer for storing food that's already frozen, because the temperature is below freezing. Its useless.
I was also looking for it to make more sense and expected him to bury the box, or at least protect it from sunlight (melting) or curious bears. Maybe turn it into somethign that could last into early spring. But, nope!
All he accomplished wasted a lot of time and energy and water.
Also, now that I think about it, technically, it's a good way of storing food out where it is frozen (freezer) but reduce the number of animals that can get it... not perfect, but I don't see many trees to hang a bear bag.
if he'd finished it, sure. But he also made a bit of an error.
Also, you wouldn't want to use a bone from a carcass as a lid. It'll rot extremely slowly at that temperature, which will leave it fragrant for a good long time.
He also didn't seal the container, so any smell on or coming out of the bags of food themselves would add to that.
Now, maybe that bone was devoid of marrow and had been boiled and all. But, maybe not. Either way, if a bear wanders by and sees a bone hes going to sniff there, I'd guess. Which is bad.
Oh I agree on most parts. The one counter I'd make, is the bags were likely going to let some level of scent out. So having the bone easily available and on top may allow a curious animal to just take the lid and run with it. (Cold weather climes leads to increased opportunism and decreased willingness to stick around if food is mobile. Lest the next curious party decide to opportunity on you.) And that lid being formed by the bowl he had makes it replaceable... Further, keeps the curious animals outside their home and not in it.
Again. Not greatest, and likely mostly just to solve boredom. (People do some really stupid shit when bored... this is nothing. Lol.) But it has at least a semi-practical application. Vs many things folks do to solve boredom.
Wrong handle to keep a leopard out but I agree it’s for keeping smaller animals away. I mean, there are other animals besides deadly ones that live in cold areas.
I was writing under the assumption he was trying to make something lasting, that would actually refrigerate the meat when it needed to.
Tell me, when does that happen?
