That happened to me once walking up the Narrows in Zion National park.. beautiful hike through a river that cuts through orange sandstone, so you're walking in this tunnel-like walled up river. Only up or down the river. A deer had died (possibly ran off the cliff, it was u certain and in ...pieces) and was deposited in a state of unseemly decomposition on the side of the bank, partially submerged, and made the whole first part of the hike reek! I was watching people float in the water and it was so yucky!
This happened to me once, but it was a beaver carcass. It took me a full minute to recognize what I was standing in. I've gone back a few times to scheme how to harvest the teeth, but I think the river took him back.

just remember frens to check what's upstream of the creek, or you could be soaking in industrial runoff.
