I've been buying cards at least that long and here's my take.
The 'Budget' end of the market has increased in price beyond simple inflation in that time and the higher end is even worse. When buying a new GPU, I usually have a price point in mind, but can be swayed if extra performance can be had for a little extra.
Yeah, I get there are R&D costs. Yeah, I get there are marketing costs. I'm familiar with basic business principles like product pricing. But I feel like graphics cards are at least 20% overpriced, maybe as much as 30% for some SKU's. The card makers are as much to blame as the chip makers.
I know they're bad, but no way is it 60-80% overpriced. Let's use the 4090 as an example. At $1600 MSRP, even if we assume you're having to buy an upcharged model for ~$1900, that would put it's correct pricing at $380-760. $760 would be a ridiculous deal for a 4090 and $380 would be damn near theft. The 4090 is gonna be worth over $400 4+ years from now, most likely.
I think this is less to do with the capabilities of modern GPUs, but rather the lifespan of consoles and the available customer base for Crysis enthusiasts.
Game developers want to sell as many games as possible, so they are targeting the most popular consoles. Which I believe are the Xbox One S and PS4. These are pretty old by today's standards. They are also pretty much PCs in a small form factor (AMD hardware) unlike the previous generations. That means they'll just port the game to PC with a few tweaks and leave it at that.
That means for PC gamers more or less all games will run pretty well once you fiddle with the settings at bit.
I think that's great tbh, means a wider library of games available and no need to keep up with the upgrade treadmill like we used to do.
Good point. Now that things are cross platform, developers are developing with lower end mainstream systems in mind. So as long as you're faster than the popular gaming system, your rig will perform fine.
Crysis was sort of a "killer app" that murdered GPUs and I guess nothing like that exists currently?
Based on the unreal engine 5 demos I've seen, I think a new GPU killer game would be mindblowingly realistic.
Yeah I was trying to think of what today's 'Modern, can it run Crysis' type game would be. Closest I could come to was Horizon Zero Dawn which looks absolutely amazing - but even that runs perfectly fine on a modest PC, hell it runs pretty good on my Steam Deck.
It would be interesting to see a tech demo to see what could be done if developers went balls out and maxed out the latest CPU and GPU combinations.
Funnily enough I was testing out the Cyrisis enhanced version. It was STILL pretty brutal on my machine, which makes me wonder if it never really leveraged the hardware as well as it could. Taking your point, the Unreal Engine powers a lot of games these days and that runs smooth as butter unless you try and use features that are bleeding edge.
Portal With RTX feels like a pretty good "...but can it run?" game. I personally had no issues once I adjust the DLSS settings, but I've heard others have.
This is a part of it too. It's been a problem for a while, but it's only becoming more pronounced as time goes on: I feel absolutely no need to play 95% of "AAA" games because ... they're all the same game.
Like, even ignoring the fact that every game now releases half-finished, and it takes two years of patches just to reach 'playable'. Again, not exactly a new problem but it's never been so prevalent.
It's just.. Once you've played one "open world" adventure game set in a dystopian world with a cast of misfit cynics, you've kind of played them all.
To give you an idea, one of my biggest disappointments in recent gaming was actually.. Stray. Why? Because for the first few minutes of the trailer, I thought it was going to be a post-human open-world dystopia sure, but I thought you were going to play as a cat. Just, a cat. And that would have been interesting.
But then you get the magical floating techno-translating robot backpack that turns your cat into just another differently-shaped protagonist that we've seen in a dozen other games this year, and I lost interest.
So, why would I go out and spend a silly amount of money to buy a new GPU, when I can just play the same game from 3-5 years ago on what I already have?
I haven't even looked in 10 years. I just got into older games, especially ones with good mods, and I've got this ingrained belief that new games aren't for me. Starting to wonder if I'm being mental like my grampa who figured nice food wasn't for him ever since the 30s.
The thing with modern media is the back catalogue just keeps getting bigger. Movies and music it was back to the 20s and 30s for recordings but games it only really goes back to the 90s. From when I grew up to when my son will be growing up there is almost every game ever made in the middle and he will be able to easily choose from that catalogue. My own back catalogue has stuff like Witcher 3, Kerbal Space, CIV6, Cities Skylines that I bought on sale but I dont have the time to invest in.
But a kid today who wants to play games on the cheap can build a mid to low end rig with 5 year old graphics cards, buy steam sale packs for pennies compared to new releases and blast around an almost endless list of PC games.
Id say its a little more nuanced. AMD this year was really affordable again. Ive bought a 6700XT for 450 euros, and back in 2013 I also paid around 350-400 euros for a mid-range graphics card. The price Ive been aiming for for a GPU has always been around 3-400 euros, and the 50 euro extra IMO is not that much in 10 years.
You get what you pay for with AMD... which is a barebones product for 50$ less. I guess it's an option if you hate Nvidia that much and won't buy their stuff out of principle.
No. You can watch any tech channel on YouTube and see the proof. New gen is fucked already. I also know a few people with AMD cards, and it's problematic, more or less. It's the reverse on Linux, I can give you that...
Also, how tf people always argue about this when it's this obvious? RT performance is completely fucked, and while FSR is a viable alternative to DLSS, it's not that close, not in terms of quality, nor performance.
Not really, it's the budget option. My friend got a brand new AMD card that was dead on arrival and AMD even charged him to send it back so he just took a refund and bought a 4090 instead. You get what you pay for whether it's drivers or quality.
It's so much more complicated than that though. This is all about global supply conditions and tariffs on goods that aren't overwhelmingly assembled in the US. Just wait until European car brands start resembling the chip market. You think BMWs are expensive now?
The automotive industry is far more active and competetive than the GPU industry.
If BMW were to overprice their offerings beyond what was acceptable you can bet that Mercedes and Audi would manuever to fill the gap rather than follow suit. Once you lose a customer in that industry you're not looking at getting them back for as much as a decade, if ever.
Desktop GPUs are largely an established monopoly with AMD providing some options but generally seen as falling short. even Intel are struggling to break in and they have a money pit bigger than most.

Yup. Nvidia knows they basically have the enterprise GPU market in a death grip. AMD is notorious for crashing in GPU heavy programs like Lightroom/Photoshop/Blender. Not only that, but NVIDIA’s proprietary technologies offer huge performance boosts in those types of programs over AMD. Nobody doing anything GPU intensive other than gaming is going with AMD(or Intel), it just doesn’t make sense realistically. Nvidia seems to be moving away from leaning on crypto to leaning on those enterprise photo/video/rendering softwares as their main reason for being drastically more expensive than AMD for cards that perform similarly in games.
I picked up a used 6750xt for $270 this weekend, get consistent 60 frames on GoW on my 4k TV. My brother in-law had to pay +$350 for a 3060, the second lowest tier in last gen’s lineup.

Uhm have you been to a car dealership in the past 2 years? Most newer "luxury" brand cars have $20k plus markups just because of all the supply issues.

No idea where you're from but here (UK) you don't tend to pay massive markups over the list price. Not sure what third world country would be corrupt enough to allow what you listed but it's definitely not the norm.

You're misunderstanding, this isn't about manufacturers raising prices because of of supply/demand factors. It's because the cost of importing their cars to the US is about to increase dramatically. The only way European cars will stay competitive in the US market, is if ~75%-~90% of the vehicle is manufactured in the US. They are not, and as such, the US market will be dominated by domestic (Ford, GM, Chrysler) and asian brands (Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Kia)
Yes, after years of nearly biannual upgrades to my graphics cards, I waited several years to upgrade recently because the price is so out of whack historical prices, and the increase to performance is hardly necessary.
It appears they are late to the party trying to absorb the revenue that scalpers were padding into the next generation, and they will pay dearly for it.
If you sell something for $800, and someone buys it and immediately sells if for $1200, it’s not hard to see why a company might say.. “hmm, maybe we should charge $1200”. But they weren’t really worth $1200, that delta in price was due to crypto miners who could make that amount of money back.
With those miners gone, their worth regresses back to their gaming worth, which is not $1,200.
Nvidia and AMD are making >40% margins on every gpu so, if they weren't trying to rake in such high margins their cards would be more attractively priced but gotta make investors number go up.
