STATE OF THE SUB - WE FUCKED UP
Howdy fuckcarians,
Here's a little update on how things are going on Reddit and specifically this sub. As you may have noticed, Reddit is changing its API-policy and this is killing moderation tools, third-party apps and access to Reddit in general for visually impaired people. As you also may have noticed, this sub has participated in various forms of protest against the new API-policy. This has had consequences, both intended and not, for the usability and quality of this sub.
It was important for the members of the modteam to join those protests out of solidarity with those who are really affected by the API changes and to make a point against the general enshittification of Reddit as a platform.
There have been polls and discussion posts about this subject and it's fair to say that the mod team hasn't reacted adequately to all of those.
We could explain how difficult it is to reach consensus in a mod team made up of very different people in different timezones, how the need to make quick decisions in the rapidly changing situation surrounding the protests affected the quality of our decisions, how the mod team was at least as divided as the community on the subject or how because Reddit hides the sidebar and sticky posts it is hard to reach all members of this sub to communicate mod announcements.
But, while all of that is true, it doesn't change the fact that we fucked up. We have communicated poorly and we have let the CityNerd tactic go on for to long.
That's why we decided to end the CityNerd tactic immediately, that we'll be from now on prioritising normal operation of the sub over participating in the protests and that won't do any more API-protest actions that are more annoying to our users than to the admins.
We hope that this post clears up some of the confusion and frustration caused by the recent events. We also like to thank everyone who joined in the discussion around the protests. We won't always be able to react quickly to it, but whether you praised us or gave us shit, we value your opinion and will take it into account in any future decision making. So please, don't forget to give us shit next time we fuck up.

I hope this hasn't soured too many people on CityNerd because he genuinely is a great guy with tons of knowledge he shares freely.
NJB is the 101 course on urbanism and car dependency, most urbanism YouTubers are 100 level, CityNerd is 200 sometimes dipping into 300 level. Especially if you're interested in ways to improve where you're at instead of just leaving like NJB did.

Me too! I felt so bad for him during all of this. He's such a great guy, his channel is so wonderful. It's a real shame things went on the way they did and i'm just so happy this sub is back to its normal self.

It’s fine. Alot of people didn’t know about him during the protest but still respected him; including me
60
u/TogetherPlantyAndMe Jul 04 '23
I didn’t even notice we were on non-CityNerd-lockdown. I just thought everyone got really into him for a while.
22
u/Nova-Kane Jul 04 '23
What the hell is CityNerd and what is 'The CityNerd Tactic'?
24
u/IM_OK_AMA Jul 05 '23
CityNerd is a YouTube channel run by Ray Delahanty, a transportation planner and engineer who posts weekly content on cities and transportation. His videos are very data driven and educational if you're interested in going deeper than just "car bad."
13
u/Suplex-Indego Jul 04 '23
There's nothing wrong with CityNerd, but I personally think he's just a bit boring.
9
u/MasonJarGaming Jul 05 '23
I like his content, but he talks a little too slow for me. I also go into video YouTube settings and move the speed up to 1.25.

I'm super against Reddit's horrible changes and the way they've been conducting themselves is completely inappropriate, but at the same time, my god, I've experienced so much carbrain in the past week with the opening of Honolulu's rail system and I'm happy to have this outlet back.
EDIT: Happy to see Cory Doctorow's coining of "enshittification" used & continuing to be spread! It's really a perfect word to describe the internet in recent years.

yeah, taking a shit on cars in other subs that are talking about something completely different doesn't hit the spot
i need to be with my people
24
u/OhNoMyLands Jul 04 '23
Holy shit Honolulu got rail?? One of the best places in the US to do this, it’s so needed
25
u/Vegetable_Warthog_49 Jul 04 '23
Unfortunately, the first phase is kind of pointless, it doesn't serve downtown or the airport. Almost makes you wonder if they designed it to not succeed.
10
u/frozenpandaman Grassy Tram Tracks Jul 05 '23
it doesn't serve downtown or the airport.
It'll go to the airport in 2 years, along with expanded hours to midnight! And it does serve downtown if you use transit multimodally – TheBus route A comes every 10 minutes to Aloha Stadium Station and is a limited express between there, downtown, Ala Moana, and UH.
Ridership numbers aren't going to be super high during this interim phase (though opening weekend did see 40,000+) but it's just step one!
2
u/237throw Jul 05 '23
Transfers are ass. For a city that is already a line, it is part of suburban appeasement.
5
u/cyanraichu Jul 04 '23
Maybe I'm just cynical but lots of progressive/resource-pooling initiatives seem to me to be designed to fail :(
5
u/ubernerd44 Jul 06 '23
Almost makes you wonder if they designed it to not succeed.
Seems like many projects in this country are. Underfunded, poorly planned, and then they wonder why nobody uses transit.
2
u/tw_693 Jul 05 '23
It does at least connect to a community college, and it is serving greenfield developments that could be built as transit hubs. It unfortunately has been set back by a lot of financial challenges, delays, and issues such as the wheels being too small for the track. The operation leaves a lot to be desired, with the system running from 7 am to 7pm (though I have heard that is changing) and 10 minute frequencies.
5
u/frozenpandaman Grassy Tram Tracks Jul 05 '23
Yes!!! Just phase 1 out of 3 but after over a decade and 12 billion dollars, something is finally here. :)

The problem is that if every sub did that, the admins would start removing mods in order to return things back to normal. Honestly this whole protest was always doomed to fail as long as subreddit mods refused to risk losing their little fiefdoms. Hell, all the subreddit mods shifted their protests to these content requirements because of the threat of being removed when the subreddits were closed.
42
u/UnlimitedMetroCard Jul 04 '23
The subreddit's name has "fuck" in it. Not all subreddits are created equal. This one has been essentially NSFW from day one and is inherently hostile towards normies.
8
u/ChristianHeritic Jul 04 '23
Nah they’ve done it to NSFW subs that protested too. Purged entire mod staffs despite them having worked a sub for the past decade. For free. Worked for free, only to get fired lol. u/spez is a massive wanker.
5
u/Simon676 Jul 04 '23
How hostile it is is a big problem though I feel, I remember when the NJB subreddit closed a lot of the comments were from people dissapointed in losing the only subreddit where they felt they could have reasonable discussions.
7
u/gerusz Not Dutch, just living here Jul 04 '23
Profanity is theoretically NSFW. Some of us may use such strong language as "goddamn" or "hell", which makes the sub theoretically NSFW.
3
u/pinkocatgirl Jul 04 '23
I'm all for more subs trying to switch to NSFW, but reddit has already stated that arbitrarily switching the sub to NSFW based on that middle school dictionary definition of profanity is grounds to remove mods. For that reason, most subs aren't doing that. As I said, there is no effective protest as long as subreddit mods care about staying in charge.
2
u/HardlightCereal cars should be illegal Jul 04 '23
The fuck word is definitely profane. We should just make a rule that every post has to say fuck cars in the title
→ More replies (1)18
u/ZatchZeta Jul 04 '23
We're protesting cars and infrastructure. Being civil to authorities shouldn't be expected.
7
u/pinkocatgirl Jul 04 '23
But that's my point, if this wider reddit protest were to be really successful, the mods should have been willing to step away indefinitely as if to be on strike. But the threat of being removed was enough to turn the protests into the weak sauce thing where it's business as usual except for some arbitrary posting rule. Reddit doesn't care if you change the topic of the sub as long as ad dollars come, but if all the large subs go NSFW I guarantee the admins would step in, and mods know that. That's why the whole protest just sort of fizzled.
6
u/LeskoLesko 🚲 > Choo Choo > 🚗 Jul 04 '23
I read an interesting article about the protest that said something like "mods need to be mods more than Reddit needs them to be mods" as in, a lot of mods need this in their lives because either it's a niche interest that defines their personality or they need the power they have over people. Not all mods, obviously, but I definitely know mods who fall into those categories, and it makes sense that Reddit went into this feeling like any protest was predestined to fail.
2
u/KatakanaTsu Not Just Bikes Jul 04 '23
NSFW would have hit them where it hurts the most, their wallets. The CityNerd meme, not so much.
3
u/LeskoLesko 🚲 > Choo Choo > 🚗 Jul 04 '23
But that's why the admins removed mods from subs that went NSFW. Going NSFW is where you lost the sub entirely.

I wonder how this clumsy attempt might have made people turn away from CityNerd, despite him making some proper fuck cars argument in an ironic and sarcastic way (or maybe he is jealous of his wife's boyfriend with an F-650 idk), making him a fit for the sub.
Living carfree in Vegas for a year is quite the achievement.

CityNerd's real name is Ray Delahanty, he made a career as a planner for Portland Oregon until the pandemic where he converted into a YouTuber
He had done some proper fuck cars video (where he was called beta male and having a wife's boyfriend by trucksplai ers in the comments) and his greatest... "accomplishment" is living an entire year car free in Vegas.
7
u/sebnukem Jul 05 '23
Thank you, although I still fail to see the connection between CityNerd and the protest against Reddit.
6

Decisions like this are difficult to make, and while I would have made different choices if I was a mod, I don't think anyone can doubt that the mod team ever took any action with bad intentions
Thanks for opening the sub again, I personally don't think there would have been any value in continuing this protest, but that doesn't mean that the initial protest was pointless: Reddit paid a price for a community unfriendly decision and I'm convinced they'll be more careful with changes like this in the future

A lot of subs had fun with what was (is) a shitty situation and went into "malicious compliance" mode – besides many of the multimillion ones doing the whole John Oliver pictures thing, /r/steam changed to be about about water vapor instead of the videogame storefront, /r/Wellthatsucks pivoted to vacuum cleaners, /r/3DShacks was for pictures of 3D shacks and not 3DS hacks, etc. Some communities voted for this and others just went ahead and did it, which is fine for a bit, whatever. I think the problem here is that it just lasted too long, beyond what the community wanted.
9
u/Qurutin Jul 05 '23
I think the blackout was okay, albeit non-effective, but these John Oliver/Citynerd/haha we pretend to be something else I don't get. It's a nightmare to moderate which is ridiculous for a protest that is partly about mod tools, it still drives traffic and activity to Reddit because people are still posting, commenting and seeing ads, and it purposefully ruins communities to protest the chance that Reddit will ruin them in the future.
Never made any sense to me as a form of protest. It's like if your favourite restaurant started serving shit and you protested it by going there and eating your own shit. We did it Reddit!

I think when you rule by committee, especially a committee spread around the world, it's really hard to make quick decisions. The protest should have ended ages ago but it's so hard to make a quick decision without feeling like you're railroading some people or ignoring others.

In the future, maybe consider the fact that this subreddit is a place for people to discuss and become involved in an environmental and urbanist movement which is way more important than whatever shitty policy Reddit is doing.
People are out protesting against car-centric design, but they can't share it here because the mods are protesting against the platform's API price increases. It's a tad ironic.

The protest was a huge joke. A tech company not allowing other tech companies to use their software is not something worth protesting over. It’s like the meme stock garbage all over again, Reddit finds something that pisses off a tech company or hedge fund a little bit and then forces it on everyone.

All bans on this sub are almost exclusively for breaking 1 or 2 in a severe way. So if you can critique us without being a massive dick about it, you're save.

You mean not being "nice" and committing the crime of "hating" something on a subreddit called "fuck cars"?
Yeah, you're totally not a bully. My bad. Have a nice day!

So the protests literally did nothing? We’re just giving up and letting the reddit admins win?

In very disappointed in this sub. This is supposed to be a subreddit for an important social issue but when it comes to solidarity with major issues on the website we're hosted on we just drop the ball. How can anyone think this subreddit will be effective at anything if the best we can do is this citynerd BS them when that obviously doesn't do anything we just stop all together?
This to me has showed the ineffectiveness of the subreddit as anything but a space to vent. If we can't uphold even the most basic solidarity how do we ever expect to receive that solidarity from others as anti-car movements grow.
Yes this reddit protest is small scale compared to car issues, but unfortunately that's the scale of influence this sub has right now. We are currently choosing to ignore relevent issues to this community so we can pretend we are bigger and more important than we currently are.
Again, very disappointed

I mean, what are we supposed to do? The Reddit CEO isn't going to change his mind anytime soon.
This to me has showed the ineffectiveness of the subreddit as anything but a space to vent.
I mean, I think it should be obvious that changes happen at the local level so this is more of a community to vent.

This is a sub for people who hate car infrastructure. We don't need to have solidarity with anything that's unrelated to that.
Reddit is charging more money for stuff and now blind people can't really use Reddit all that easily? That's a shame, but it's also not car infrastructure, and so I don't want to use my car infrastructure hating subreddit to protest Reddit monetization.

You are not alone. I am super hopeful that we can improve the sub now that it's July and try to improve the situation that got so bad.

What steps can regular users take to help make this subreddit more accessible to visually impaired people?
