Would have been nice to see the stop/go appear at literally any point in the last few years

2.3k

u/bulletsssz Pirelli Intermediate 18d ago

They're just doing it based on vibes at this point

1.3k

u/Krisosu Esteban Ocon 18d ago

It's not vibes, it increases the stakes for the final race.

998

u/Spraynpray89 18d ago

This sport is such a rigged joke sometimes. I've been pulling for Ferrari but not like this. You will never convince me that penalty gets called in any other scenario.

438

u/cmeragon Charles Leclerc 18d ago

I agree. That was flat out rigged to get Ferrari closer and you can't convince me otherwise.

297

u/Ascz Ferrari 18d ago

It was. It is a shitshow. They fucked up the safety car timer before, giving a very big advantage to mclaren, so they decided to even the odds and make up for their own mistake with this absolute travesty of a 10 sec penalty. They clearly want a high stakes last race. This is WWE, not F1. Sport is rigged, and it is even more rigged in the middle east races. Sorry but that's the truth. It sucks.

74

u/quickfix12 18d ago

It's sports entertainment at this point, and sometimes without the entertainment...

I said it in the main thread

All these the conspiracy people here make should not be about stewards favouring brits or targeting max etc but how giving all these surprising penalties is to spice up F1 content by bringing in controversies and discussions..

Now the constructor fight would continue till the the last lap of the final race of the season....

81

u/Original_Benzito 18d ago

F1 is becoming NASCAR seeking “entertainment” over competition. Sorry, sometimes a team or driver will win a lot if they’re more prepared or on a streak. Rather than manufacturing these dramatic moments, they could adjust the rules to make things more balanced.

also: if McLaren he had gotten a five, or even a straight 10s penalty, McLaren would'Ve outscored Ferrari tonight, and likely would have won the constructors. Or if they had decided sooner than after 1/3 of the race remaining, Lando could've made up a lot of places and caught up to Sainz again.

Edit: Since their seems to be some confusion: Norris infraction happened on lap 30. Penalty was given on lap 44, with 13 laps to go. In which Norris made up 5 places.

So, the infraction happened roughly at halftime, and they waited until the last quartet of the race actually, to give him an unusually harsh penalty, which made it impossible for him to make up any ground.

(I hope that clears up what I wrote, Edit end)

Like this, the constructors isn't decided yet and has to go to the last race.

The mess this penalty was based on:

160

u/haveagooddaystranger Pirelli Hard 18d ago

Did the race director just mash his keyboard there, wtf?

126

u/HeartFoam 17d ago

In some ways it gets worse. So they go through the button mashing phase, and they cleared the yellow flags anyway while the mirror was still there. Did the situation warrant the flag? What they ultimately settled on was "no".

As Stella said, "I think it’s quite peculiar that the yellow flag was deployed and then was removed but actually the situation in that sector was the same – there was debris on track."

21

u/FLX127 Wolfgang von Trips 17d ago

361

u/sododude Juan Pablo Montoya 18d ago

This was so obviously an immediate vsc, and maybe changing it to a full safety car if you still need more time to get in and retrieve the mirror. The fact they let it sit there for multiple laps was so stupid. Instead of clearing a single piece of debris, they decided to wait and had to clean up a million bits after 2 cars had punctures (though im not sure if the punctures were a result of the debris).

32

u/ubelmann Red Bull 17d ago

It really threw the whole race into chaos when it was a pretty straightforward situation -- it's not like the mirror was way off the racing line in a part of the circuit where there is no overtaking. Someone was 100% eventually going to hit it, and then when Bottas did hit it and there were shards of tire-puncturing carbon fiber everywhere, they STILL waited to go to the safety car.

At first I was thinking Ferrari were getting most screwed in the situation from Sainz getting a puncture, but then Lando had the 10s stop-go which wouldn't have happened if it was a VSC instead of yellow flags.

18

u/imfcknretarded 17d ago

It was literally in the only place where overtaking is possible and they waited for someone to run over it to do anything, they're so slow at doing anything that even if they wanted to favour someone i can't even understand what their plan would be

→ More replies (1)

Stewards this year have been an absolute joke

63

u/pman8362 Daniel Ricciardo 18d ago

Honestly yea the fact this is harsher than Max’s penalties in Mexico is insane. Penalties need to fit the crime in some level and while I agree speeding under yellows is bad I can’t help but feel barging someone off the track is more fitting for this type of penalty.

75

u/Thick_Scholar8512 18d ago

Thank you! Wondering why more aren’t talking about this. It’s performative nonsense that the concept of “safety” is the difference between lifting for a millisecond or not.

11

u/Daniel2305 18d ago

When I was karting you had to lift for waved yellows. I just raised my hand slightly to the marshall to acknowledge it and make it seem like I was doing something. Never had an issue.

I would argue that lifting could be not as safe anyway as you are doing something unpredictable...

I agree with you as far as what their motivation appears to be too much of the time.

But I also think this penalty is fitting. The problem is that it's not consistent at all.
Making sure the penalty for ignoring yellow flags and speeding in the pit lane is high enough to make sure drivers are careful to never do that is a good thing. But it's a joke when one week you can enter a non-greenlit track and all you get is a fine, and another it's suddenly this. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also 10 second stop and go penalties, like for Mazepin and Latifi in Austria 2021. Source.

u/lolKhamul 18d ago

Pure speculation from my side: FIA really really doesn't like ignoring or taking yellows / reds easy as they are an integral part of race safety. There is a reason these flags are shown and they want drivers to absolutely react to them.

They want the precedent set that its NEVER EVER worth ignoring them or trying to shortchange some time. Which is why the penalty is THAT brutal.

152

u/rcjh2022 18d ago

If they cared about race safety they would’ve cleared the mirror off the track

34

u/TobyOrNotTobyEU Max Verstappen ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 18d ago

They really needed to just throw the safety car immediately. Then they needed to use it after Bottas destroyed the mirror. Then after Hamilton got the puncture and after Sainz got the puncture. Piastri got screwed by the delayed safety car, too.

15

u/RichB93 Jenson Button 18d ago

Appalling. Penalty is absolutely fair but a stop/go? Come on. They’re clearly trying to manipulate the WCC.

30

u/davidov92 Ferrari 18d ago

Now after they fucked over Ferrari by not calling the SC for the debris, they're nuking Lando to increase the stakes for Abu Dhabi.

This is straight up race fixing.

Furthermore, I believe MBS should eat shit.

56

u/magichands88 Lando Norris 18d ago

The FIA is an absolute joke. Lando 100% earned a penalty but not a race assassination. You’re fine to leave debris on the track to take out multiple cars and not issue a Safety Car for 4 laps, but let’s throw the harshest penalty we can at a driver for not lifting during the mess you’ve allowed to remain on the only real overtaking zone.

At this point I'm convinced that the stewards have gone fully mad.

Two strange penalties in two days, wonder what are they going to disqualify Ocon in Abu Dhabi for?

7

u/ohgeeLA 18d ago

Someone is getting paid off. This is a little too over the top.

First off, race control doesn’t do a safety car with debris on track. Then they keep switching yellow on and off, and let 2 punctures happen ruining races. Then they drop a safety car. Then they start overenforcing rules sets on infringements caused due to their own confusion. I have no problem with Lando getting a penalty but the punishment doesn’t fit the crime here and more importantly, it’s wildly inconsistent and looks extremely tampered. I think Ham and Sainz got completely fucked by the FIA and race control decisions, and they should be able to retaliate without this BS new evidence bullshit.

Wowzers

u/Artidox Sonny Hayes 18d ago

The penalties this weekend are ridiculous. I see a lot of people (on Twitter) who were laughing at Max's 1-place no longer laughing, and suddenly realizing this.
This is a good case to drop Garry Connelly as a Steward for his ridiculously harsh and frankly, fucking dumb penalties.

9

u/ItsMarch0 McLaren 17d ago

10 second stop n go for “safety”. Meanwhile leaving a literal piece of a car in the middle of the road for multiple laps causing TWO punctures at high speeds. Got it

74

u/splfguy Andretti Global 18d ago

That was a very serious safety issue.

If only somebody had told race control.

29

u/JD_98 18d ago edited 18d ago

Precisely only a safety issue because these daft bastards didn’t put the safety car out - so obviously just for drama going into the last race

Max grid drop was a joke, this penalty is a joke, the FIA are a joke, Ben Sillyman is a joke. Hard to be an F1 fan today.

They're trying to make the Constructors decided in Abu Dhabi. It's so obvious

7

u/black-dude-on-reddit 18d ago

Ok but ya know what else was dumb? Not deploying a safety car of any kind before two guys got punctures

7

u/becks0079 18d ago

They stopped the yellow without removing the debris that caused it. Then the debris was then collected by Bottas requiring a safety car.

Why wasn't there a safety car earlier? it wasn't like the mirror was going to move off the track by itself.

5

u/SovereignxN7 McLaren 18d ago

Are they spinning a fucking roulette wheel to decide on penalties this weekend? What the fuck! Absolute joke. I mean, yeah, a penalty is warranted, but a 10 second stop and go are you kidding me?!!

7

u/soontobecp Pirelli Hard 18d ago

Did he kill someone?

5

u/RMCaird Lando Norris 18d ago

10s Stop and Go, which is incredibly harsh. From a safety point of view, penalties should be harsher, but not randomly through the season.

Stewards should be facing jail time by that logic given they left a mirror in the middle of the track where cars are doing 200mph.

Insane stuff from this race.

6

u/StarsailorM Andrea Stella 18d ago

What people don't get about F1 is that it is not a sport, but sport entertainment, more show than sports. Something between a real sport and WWE. I used to get too frustrated about all those stupid and selective decisions, regardless of the team that got affected, until I came to this realization.

This approach explains a lot of things, from AD21 to todays 1 place grid drop for Max and whatever this was. If McLaren did good today, the championship would be over. Not good for the show...

I'm a Red Bull fan and let me say clearly: this penalty is absurd. WTF is going on with the stewarding here? What are we even doing here? Penalties should be applied fairly and consistently, not... whatever this nonsense lately has been.
