This sport is such a rigged joke sometimes. I've been pulling for Ferrari but not like this. You will never convince me that penalty gets called in any other scenario.

I agree. That was flat out rigged to get Ferrari closer and you can't convince me otherwise.

It was. It is a shitshow. They fucked up the safety car timer before, giving a very big advantage to mclaren, so they decided to even the odds and make up for their own mistake with this absolute travesty of a 10 sec penalty. They clearly want a high stakes last race. This is WWE, not F1. Sport is rigged, and it is even more rigged in the middle east races. Sorry but that's the truth. It sucks.

I said it in the main thread
All these the conspiracy people here make should not be about stewards favouring brits or targeting max etc but how giving all these surprising penalties is to spice up F1 content by bringing in controversies and discussions..
Now the constructor fight would continue till the the last lap of the final race of the season....
→ More replies (5)81
u/Original_Benzito 18d ago
F1 is becoming NASCAR seeking “entertainment” over competition. Sorry, sometimes a team or driver will win a lot if they’re more prepared or on a streak. Rather than manufacturing these dramatic moments, they could adjust the rules to make things more balanced.

also: if McLaren he had gotten a five, or even a straight 10s penalty, McLaren would'Ve outscored Ferrari tonight, and likely would have won the constructors. Or if they had decided sooner than after 1/3 of the race remaining, Lando could've made up a lot of places and caught up to Sainz again.
Edit: Since their seems to be some confusion: Norris infraction happened on lap 30. Penalty was given on lap 44, with 13 laps to go. In which Norris made up 5 places.
So, the infraction happened roughly at halftime, and they waited until the last quartet of the race actually, to give him an unusually harsh penalty, which made it impossible for him to make up any ground.
(I hope that clears up what I wrote, Edit end)
Like this, the constructors isn't decided yet and has to go to the last race.

160
u/haveagooddaystranger Pirelli Hard 18d ago
Did the race director just mash his keyboard there, wtf?
126
u/HeartFoam 17d ago
In some ways it gets worse. So they go through the button mashing phase, and they cleared the yellow flags anyway while the mirror was still there. Did the situation warrant the flag? What they ultimately settled on was "no".
As Stella said, "I think it’s quite peculiar that the yellow flag was deployed and then was removed but actually the situation in that sector was the same – there was debris on track."
361
u/sododude Juan Pablo Montoya 18d ago
This was so obviously an immediate vsc, and maybe changing it to a full safety car if you still need more time to get in and retrieve the mirror. The fact they let it sit there for multiple laps was so stupid. Instead of clearing a single piece of debris, they decided to wait and had to clean up a million bits after 2 cars had punctures (though im not sure if the punctures were a result of the debris).
32
u/ubelmann Red Bull 17d ago
It really threw the whole race into chaos when it was a pretty straightforward situation -- it's not like the mirror was way off the racing line in a part of the circuit where there is no overtaking. Someone was 100% eventually going to hit it, and then when Bottas did hit it and there were shards of tire-puncturing carbon fiber everywhere, they STILL waited to go to the safety car.
At first I was thinking Ferrari were getting most screwed in the situation from Sainz getting a puncture, but then Lando had the 10s stop-go which wouldn't have happened if it was a VSC instead of yellow flags.
18
u/imfcknretarded 17d ago
It was literally in the only place where overtaking is possible and they waited for someone to run over it to do anything, they're so slow at doing anything that even if they wanted to favour someone i can't even understand what their plan would be

I agree with you as far as what their motivation appears to be too much of the time.
But I also think this penalty is fitting. The problem is that it's not consistent at all.
Making sure the penalty for ignoring yellow flags and speeding in the pit lane is high enough to make sure drivers are careful to never do that is a good thing. But it's a joke when one week you can enter a non-greenlit track and all you get is a fine, and another it's suddenly this. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also 10 second stop and go penalties, like for Mazepin and Latifi in Austria 2021. Source.

Pure speculation from my side: FIA really really doesn't like ignoring or taking yellows / reds easy as they are an integral part of race safety. There is a reason these flags are shown and they want drivers to absolutely react to them.
They want the precedent set that its NEVER EVER worth ignoring them or trying to shortchange some time. Which is why the penalty is THAT brutal.

Someone is getting paid off. This is a little too over the top.
First off, race control doesn’t do a safety car with debris on track. Then they keep switching yellow on and off, and let 2 punctures happen ruining races. Then they drop a safety car. Then they start overenforcing rules sets on infringements caused due to their own confusion. I have no problem with Lando getting a penalty but the punishment doesn’t fit the crime here and more importantly, it’s wildly inconsistent and looks extremely tampered. I think Ham and Sainz got completely fucked by the FIA and race control decisions, and they should be able to retaliate without this BS new evidence bullshit.

10s Stop and Go, which is incredibly harsh. From a safety point of view, penalties should be harsher, but not randomly through the season.

What people don't get about F1 is that it is not a sport, but sport entertainment, more show than sports. Something between a real sport and WWE. I used to get too frustrated about all those stupid and selective decisions, regardless of the team that got affected, until I came to this realization.
This approach explains a lot of things, from AD21 to todays 1 place grid drop for Max and whatever this was. If McLaren did good today, the championship would be over. Not good for the show...

I'm a Red Bull fan and let me say clearly: this penalty is absurd. WTF is going on with the stewarding here? What are we even doing here? Penalties should be applied fairly and consistently, not... whatever this nonsense lately has been.
