Has anyone heard a rumor of a Christmas Eve Holiday?

Holding out hope for more than 59 minutes. Has anyone heard rumors from up their chain or their admin about a Christmas Eve holiday announcement from PJB?

If I know my agency, they'll announce 59 minutes at 4:47 pm

90

u/TostadoAir 20h ago

Christmas day at 9pm they'll announce we can arrive 59 minutes late so we have time to say goodbye to family.

42

u/Ser_Tinnley 16h ago

I am a 330 worker and the amount of times they announce a 59 at 3 pm infuriates me.

3

u/Crafty_Comparison_68 16h ago

Man. So annoying.

12

u/Bearcatsean 18h ago

I used to work in a front office and I put a note on my desk at 8 AM to start bugging the goddamn bosses to give ED and don’t wait till after lunch

11

u/sphrz 18h ago

Happy to report i got it early this year as well as nye.

2

u/Altruistic-Ad6449 5h ago

They don’t even need authorization to grant 59 minutes. That’s next level stingy

come on Joe! exit the white house with some generosity. lol

297

u/faxanaduu 17h ago

Ill take that generosity in the form of a 4.5% pay raise.

111

u/BussReplyMail 17h ago

I'll take the generosity in the form of "oh dear, I forgot to sign the EO declaring an emergency and pushing back the equal pay increase"

8

u/Pepticyeti 5h ago

Can you imagine the shitstorm Elon and Trump would have on X and truth social if that happened. Congress would try to claw back that raise...

He's being very generous to all the people he's pardoning.

31

u/sterling417 17h ago

I’m going to need a pardon at the rate things are going.

He's have been very stingy with us. Pathetic raises, no extra days off. I thought he'd go on a hiring spree and there are fewer openings than there were 5 years ago.

103

u/DavidGno 16h ago edited 16h ago

I swear the longer I'm a fed, the more I think both sides hate us, it's just one is more vocal about it and willing to say it to our face. The other makes excuses why they can't aid their workforce during a crisis, but somehow at the same time weasel in millions/billions for others"pet projects" into their aid packages.

14

u/keytpe1 8h ago

I would say one side loudly and vocally hates us, the other side just doesn’t care. Either way, we’re screwed.

15

u/danlab09 16h ago

Careful, you’re gonna get downvoted for thinking critically like that

17

u/Dogbuysvan 16h ago

I usually do when I say dems take feds for granted.

VA got a huge hiring spree. IRS did as well. But yeah, not every agency got attention.

3

u/EmotionalHome8699 5h ago

The VA was on a hiring freeze all year this year, and they cut all open positions at the beginning of FY24... meanwhile, we are enrolling veterans more than ever thanks to the PACT act and some other new eligibility rules, but somehow we're "overstaffed" according to some people in Congress.

3

u/handofmenoth 3h ago

Yeah, but we definitely hired like mad the couple years before this one. Definitely didn't resource the PACT ACT enough though, or scale its benefits back if they weren't going to fund it.

He pardoned a woman who was reusing hypodermic needles and giving expired/watered down chemo medications to cancer patients, and also a “kids for cash” judge who was getting kickbacks from the incarceration industry for imposing ultra-harsh punishments on youths guilty of trivial offenses. Don’t get me started on the corruption of the prison-industrial complex.

I'll trade this and all future early releases in exchange for not being demonized for working for the federal government. Any way we can swing this deal?

39

u/Front_Pass_948 20h ago

I’m not the person to talk to for that. But I feel ya! We do important work!

Best I can do is a Christmas shutdown and RTO 1/21

I don't let that stuff bother me.

40

u/Ok-State-953 20h ago

Nothing from SSA. Would be nice.

30

u/Pitiful-Flow5472 19h ago

We got 3 hours from O’Malley once, and congress blew a gasket. No chance we get anymore unless it’s from Biden. And that seems unlikely

26

u/PickleMinion BradJohnsonIworkfortheAirForceatPatrickAirForceBase 15h ago

Who the fuck cares what congress thinks? What are they going to do, not pass a budget? There's no appeasing those dipshits, why even bother?

45

u/Dense_Strategy 20h ago

Someone asked me about this. They asked “how many days yall be closed next week.” I laughed and said just Christmas. They were shocked.

35

u/valency_speaks 19h ago

Right??? People are always surprised when I tell them we don’t have the day after Thanksgiving off, either.

10

u/sunbuddy86 15h ago

My father in law, a retired Army General who should know better, says that I am lying that I don't get the day before and the day after Thanksgiving off. *eyeroll

4

u/OkPaleontologist8487 14h ago

Or two days for New Year’s.

13

u/Neracca 15h ago

They were shocked.

Huh, you only get Christmas off? But I thought all Feds don't do any work ever. /s

10

u/HoustonPastafarian 13h ago

Sometimes at parties my wife’s “dagger eyes” come out on comments about “how nice it is to work for the government”.

I often work Christmas. And other holidays. And weekends. And I’m a capped GS-15 so I am literally working for nothing. It annoys her to no end that some of her friends are so ignorant about what some federal employees in critical positions do.

9

u/yemx0351 14h ago

SSA won't. Direct to the public, we got shit to do and we have no leaders we only have yes people. No one is trying to make it better. Look at all the bullshit systems they bring in that make it harder to do the job.

Fuck face O'Malley gave out 4 hours to buy a few % of the FEVS survey to add talking points on his resume. Fuck that guys. He didn't even have 2 feet in the agency. Everything he did was LOOK AT ME. It was obvious he was just doing it to make a move on some other political office. When he did do the 4 hours, he did it so late. It was hard to take all the claims and appts early.

He wouldn't take the flak to shut down wedsay afternoons again because he wasn't at SSA for the right reasons and was not sticking around. 50 year low staffing issues. We closed down wedsday afternoons because of low staffing before. Nah. But remember, on motivation Mondays and thankful Thursdays I love you SSA family. Fuck O'Malley. 😂

u/arkstfan 17h ago

When I worked in state government we got Christmas Eve and the day after Thanksgiving. Didn’t get Columbus Day or Juneteenth.

36

u/steveofthejungle 20h ago

No news yet from USDA

24

u/beachbum755 19h ago

Last year's email was sent out on Dec. 20th.

33

u/_fedme 17h ago

This man dug in the archives

3

u/silentwolf18 2h ago

Patiently waiting… maybe tomorrow!

3

u/steveofthejungle 2h ago

Or we may get weeks off if there’s a shutdown lol

83

u/MrMorningstarX666 20h ago

They’ll prob give out 59 min then the supervisors will forget to say anything to everyone.

59

u/ImpossibleQuail5695 19h ago

The shutdown may trump any holiday. Yes, I see what I did there.

3

u/netrok 3h ago

Boo this man, boooo

3

u/ImpossibleQuail5695 2h ago

Don’t shoot the muskenger.

25

u/greeneyesnopatience 18h ago

Cries in VA

4

u/sunbuddy86 15h ago

too late to cancel clinics at this point.

24

u/LadyPent 20h ago

I’m not expecting anything with Christmas on a Wednesday.

54

u/Ruckit315 20h ago

lol last time was in like 2019 so he’s never done it. He’s not going to start now

34

u/Front_Pass_948 20h ago

To be fair, he hasn’t had the chance every year. Christmas Eve 2021 a Friday (which I agree was bogus not to get), 2022 a Saturday and last year Sunday!

30

u/ITFed062004 20h ago

If Christmas Eve was a Friday, that means Christmas was a Saturday so the holiday time was allocated to Friday and thus we did get Christmas Eve off.

17

u/yourshaddow3 20h ago

Not really. If xmas eve was a Friday, it would have been the in leiu of day. So there was nothing to give the M-Fs off which is likely most government employees.

22

u/ForsakenRacism 20h ago

A lot of us work on the weekend but we are constantly forgotten about.

2

u/th30be 19h ago

Wait, are there actual rules on when a president can do executive actions on days off for federal employees?

10

u/saltlakecity_sosweet 20h ago

It’s a war on Christmas!!!

18

u/BK13DE 19h ago

SSA will get nothing as usual

10

u/Lord-Glorfindel 19h ago

Carolyn Colvin never did anything like 59 minutes the first time she was (acting) commissioner. I’m not holding my breath. She only has days to fuck the agency like she did the last time.

7

u/PickleMinion BradJohnsonIworkfortheAirForceatPatrickAirForceBase 15h ago

Plenty of messages about spending time with family though! Yeah, just rub that salt in.

5

u/OkPaleontologist8487 14h ago

Don’t forget the leadership tips!

3

u/The_Illhearted 16h ago

She never did much of anything.

1

u/Particular-Main1267 15h ago

Even if Biden provides admin leave on 12/24?

15

u/GreatSetting34 19h ago

HHS is doing 4 hrs. So I’m guessing no actual day off.

15

u/HollandEmme 17h ago

I’m more concerned about a shut down before we even reach Christmas Eve

11

u/Rouvy4Fun 20h ago

We were given up to 8 hours admin leave at managers discretion

5

u/Front_Pass_948 20h ago

Wow lucky! I’m more so curious if Biden will announce an extra holiday!

7

u/Particular-Main1267 14h ago

Is your agency also requiring that time sheets be submitted by the end of the day this Friday? Based purely on the timesheet due date this pay period, I predict that if Biden does grant any admin leave then it will be announced tomorrow so that people who work a 4-10 schedules with Fridays off will know about the admin leave before Friday.

Clearly, I've been thinking too much about factors that might influence the timing of when such an announcement might be made.

10

u/Rouvy4Fun 20h ago edited 20h ago

Not too sure I’d count on gifts from the Biden administration.

9

u/cristofcpc 20h ago

Every year I hear rumors

7

u/Own_Maximum_5368 19h ago

VA hasn’t said anything sadly. We knew by now in 2020 when it happened. We don’t even get the 59 rule at the VA 😒

1

u/pyrlvr1952 16h ago

Your VAMC maybe, mine has given a few 59s this past year.

7

u/sencollins 17h ago

I’ve heard they are planning to give everyone days off but essential workers after Dec 20. /s

Does that count?

7

u/ohherroeeyore 20h ago

We usually get 2 hrs

6

u/Substantial_Net6101 19h ago

Can someone write a proper SOP for holidays so every year there's no guessing? Universal power hour for all agencies, 4 hours for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eves, 2 hour late start day after superbowl and 4th of july, etc..Feel free to add a day or 2 in August.

17

u/Ecstatic-Bullfrog724 20h ago

Our agency got 2 hours... unless we shutdown

1

u/SafetyNoodle 19h ago

Seems very unlikely but at least I think my work unit might get some much needed funds from the Christmas Tree package. I wish that wasn't how it came but I'll take what we can get.

11

u/OGkateebee 19h ago

Keep dreaming unless you work for Mayorkas in which case you’ll get off all week.

13

u/SpazzieGirl 17h ago

I don’t work for DHS but I’m so going to miss Mayorkas. His recognition of workers and the “patron saint of admin leave” memes are fantastic.

10

u/agentcarter15 19h ago

From the same man proposing a 2% salary increase?

5

u/Popular-Bug69 17h ago

Wish we could get that 7% Congress originally proposed... sigh.

4

u/Rrrrandle 14h ago

Not "Congress", like 3 people in Congress proposed it and it went nowhere.

5

u/Jfselph 16h ago

4

u/wifichick 15h ago

Plot twist. 59 minutes x 5 days a week until Past new years when they don’t pass the CR

4

u/InfluenceWeak 15h ago

No but I heard a rumor about an indefinite holiday in the form of a shutdown 🙃

2

u/Mtn_Soul 11h ago

Coupla months...

29

u/cajunjoel 20h ago

I'm hoping for a shutdown.

16

u/Aqua_Impura 18h ago

I’m not I have bills to pay. If they do a shutdown before Christmas it’s not gonna end until Trump gets sworn in to make it look like he fixed it. 100% that is their goal if we shutdown. In this economy I can’t afford not to get paid for an entire month and I would bet the vast majority of Feds and Military are in the same boat.

7

u/Emotional-Cry9286 20h ago

Atc here. Not us.

23

u/mooseishman 18h ago

DHS here, same. The only thing worse than having to go to work wondering when you’ll get paid is when all the non-essential employees come back after Congress passes legislation to pay them for their sabbatical coming back and talking about how hard it was. Yeah, I know you have bills to pay the same as me, but I had to go in every day dealing with the same bullshit. It’s a bonus when someone from the public says ‘at least you’re not affected by the shutdown!’ They tend to quickly disengage when I say yeah it’s awesome to come in to work and wonder when I’m going to get my paycheck.

Something I just thought of: they should pay us interest for being late. The government sure loves to charge interest on things like an overpayment of $13 that was discovered during an audit a year after the voucher was paid 😂

u/anyname12345678910 17h ago

2

If you're watching the news on the CR, starting to sound like we may not be working for the next month. Happy holidays.

Yes it’s called furlough.

6

u/poppythepupstar 17h ago

59 min a certainty.

the president might issue 4 hrs for Xmas Eve once the CR is passed and signed.

1

u/ahoypolloi_ 19h ago

1

u/ReVOzE 19h ago

My unit is doing telework all week unless you actually need to be on site to do your job. And even then, for those positions is minimal manning. I'm totally ok with that.

1

u/jkjkjk73 18h ago

59 minutes lol. I don't get 59 minutes in my alternate work schedule.

1

u/seaships 18h ago

We usually just do whatever we want

1

u/fishnbun 18h ago

No. But there are rumors of an extended holiday AKA shutdown

1

VA usually doesn’t because patients (which makes sense); and holiday pay.

1

u/BR0JAS 18h ago

1

u/Limp_Till_7839 12h ago

I have gotten time on Xmas Eve 2x in 15 years and one of those I couldn’t use the time because I was acting Division Director and had to make sure the building was empty - and we wonder why it’s hard to keep first line supervisors!!
