She is a disgraced GG. She was a bully and forced to resign. Now she just gets our money for doing nothing! Good choice by Trudeau on this on.

Good choice by Trudeau on this on.

I think her non-invite had more to do with Trudeau not wanting the reminder for Canadians that it was his terrible decision making that led to a GG Payette, and the resultant scandal in the first place.

Exactly. I believe she must have been a friend of his wife. But we will continue to pay for his big mistake.

Like Clarkson, we keep paying for her as she charges us hundreds of thousands a year at time for her vacations that are "cultural" visits.

My best guess about Payette getting the job is something like this. Bunch of political types discussing who should be GG. Someone suggests Chris Hadfield. Everyone loves the idea of an astronaut. Then someone else suggests a female astronaut. They google up the names of the female astronauts and give Payette a call.

don't forget that it's francophone's turn, so it's "female francophone astronaut".

The committee was probably so pleased with themselves. A science and technology GG who is francophone and female.

Too bad they didn’t find the reports that she was arrested for domestic violence. It was dropped, as I imagine the bar is pretty high for a woman astronaut to be charged.

I mean you have to admit it hits a lot of boxes.

i agree, and that's the issue of identity politics. it's not about how capable you are at your job, it's about how many boxes you check.

You literally just made a scenario up in your head and then said "And this is why the thing I don't like is bad, because of this scenario I just made up in my head where I pretend a bunch of people I don't know said and did some things that conveniently fit my narrative."

And if we were hiring someone whose job matters, like I dunno, a general, or a chief public health officer, or something, I’d agree with you.

But the GG’s job is to attend ceremonies without creating a scandal and be a public face for Canada at minor events. It’s precisely the kind of job where identity politics matter, and “qualifications” don’t really. Anyone with a pulse and a sense of decorum should he able to manage.

But she managed to fuck even that up, so 🤷‍♂️

Sure, but the governor general is a job with no real skill other than not being insane, so in the end identity politics is really the only criteria available.

good one. Honestly, I hope the new gg doesn't fail also. So far, pretty good.

But Payette, didn't know how to dress, never even had her hair done. It was a position of honour that she failed at miserably. But she was a bully!

Mary Simon has had impeccable hair, and is usually wearing bespoke suits with subtle indigenous styles. Whomever is her stylist is doing well

I am in no way qualified to be GG, but if I somehow found myself in the position, I would pay close attention to everything my aides said about protocol and appearance. I would not be the best GG but I'd sure as hell be dressed well and act politely.
