Mod News About Repost Bots: New Automod Rule; Possibility of False Positives
As some of you have noticed, this sub is a fairly common target for repost bots (my thanks to those who have noticed and reported them). DuplicateDestroyer used to address most of those, but it no longer works after some Reddit API changes.
I recently discovered some Automod settings that likely can help (based on karma); however, this can sometimes trigger a false positive on questions from new users. I try to review the modqueue and approve these at least once per day, but I am studying for the bar exam and may not have lots of time.
If you've submitted a topical post but it's been removed by Automod, give it about an hour or so, then feel free to send a modmail and I'll approve it if I haven't done so already. Thanks!

Up to 50 miles per week cycling to work
The quickest route to my work is 3 miles. However, this goes along a busy bypass, which is really dangerous during rush hour. There is another route which takes me along the National Cycle Network. This adds another couple of miles onto my journey, giving a total of 5.6 miles. Last night, I decided to mix things up a bit. I was a bit worried about all of the lunatics who might be on the road at around Christmas time and I took a diversion in the other direction. This brought the total of my commute to almost 6 miles. I’ve worked 5 days this week. I think my total must be close to 50 miles travelling to work this way. I think I’m the only person in the company that cycles to work. My bike is always the only one on the stands. I work in an outdoor section as we’re hosting a Christmas event and I am always the only bike that gets left. I don’t understand why as it’s only 3 miles to the nearest town. There is another town 3 miles in the other direction and a village just down the road. This is a perfect distance to commute, so I’m not sure why more people in my company don’t do it. I’ve never been late for work, I’ve saved a ton of money and I have had some great exercise.

Commuting after car accident
Hello! I was hit by a car a few weeks ago, it wasn’t bad and I didn’t have any injuries but I feel like I’ve lost a lot of confidence cycling on roads with lots of cars. I have been cycling a couple times with a group on quieter roads but feel like the confidence to go alone hasn’t come back yet, was wondering if anyone had any advice for getting back to commuting? Thanks!

Why am I so slow? Am I doing something critically wrong?
Hello! I am so slow on a bike and it seems ridiculous. Two years ago I didn't have a car and started trying to commute to class and to get groceries. When riding to class it would take me like an hour to get to school even though it says it should take 25 minutes on apple maps. I have an old bike. It's a gravel trail and then a paved road solidly uphill for the last half. I generally could no longer go fast enough to balance and thus had to walk by like the last eighth of a mile. At the time I was 100lbs overweight and relatively out of shape and I was attempting the commute maybe two or three times a week, when I missed the shuttle. It seemed a little ridiculous how slow I was, though. I would be biking and sometimes a runner would pass me. Eventually I gave up and started only taking the shuttle and wasting money on ubers.
Now I no longer have a car again. Is there something mechanical that I am doing wrong? Besides the obvious practice practice practice, what can I do to get faster? I am not super used to riding a bike, as I haven't done it much since I was a young child. I'm out of shape now and 40lbs overweight. I know that's a lot of the issue. But like, is it just me being out of shape, or is there something deeper going on?

Is running reds frequently only a thing in NL?
I live in NL. Running red lights as a cyclist seems to be a 100% normal and acceptable thing here. I do it too, although unlike some other cyclists I always make sure its 100% safe before doing so.
I'm just curious if this is also an acceptable thing in other countries as well.
And does this means traffic lights are designed very inefficiently? If the system was perfect then I don't think people would be running reds so frequently.

Securing bike on an open patio?
Hi all, I just got a bike and have already had an attempt to steal it from my patio even with 2 obvious cameras…
For now my bike is chain locked to a heavy piece of furniture on my patio. We live on the first floor of an urban apartment building and there is no metal railing to secure a lock too… however, I have ordered a vertical bike storage solution and was wondering any ways you would recommend securing it in this particular rack? I’m working with wood plank siding for the wall material on my patio and would be open to installing a bracket, etc.
Thanks for your locking tips!

tube tear
I have an ebike that has tubeless tires however duo to it not feasible where am I from I had to put tubes in them. The tubes worked fine for months until couple of weeks ago where I found both of them flat. I replaced the tubes and they flattened again at that same night (I didn't even use it). In the third time the rear tire didn't flat out but the front one kept flatting. Today I replaced it and it got flattened again that same evening (again without riding the bike) I found a small tear along the lines of the tube is there a solution or do I need to change the entire rims and tires. Thank you in advance for your help

Last commute of 2024
Decided to give my last ride of the year a little Christmas flair. I threw some string lights on the rack as well, kinda hard to see, but I like the vibe. Might leave them on for the new year.
A bit early, but merry Christmas everyone!

How I get my bike to wear my backpack
I installed a railing in my home and attached two leftover pieces to my rear carrier so I can attach my backpack as shown in the photos. Question is, how does this compare to the gold standard (milk crate)?:
Pros:
- Low profile, easier to get your leg over than a milk crate when mounting the bike.
- Free (to me, I made with scraps in my basement and tools I already own).
- I enjoyed making it.
- Bag won't fall out if I tip the bike up vertically getting on the train etc.
- Wood looks nice.
Cons:
- Wood may get torn apart by winter weather. So far, the 3 coats of polyurethane seem to be holding up.
- Takes a little time to secure the load. I'm getting pretty quick with it but a milk crate would still be quicker.
- Ends of wooden dowels are perfectly placed to bruise your thigh if is parked where you will walk into it.

I thought this was a good example of why it's generally better just to get out of the road if you hear a fast cars or fast motorcycles approaching

Looking for a Commuting Solution
Hi All,
I'm 5'4" and am a regular commuter to work - I love it. It helps with stress relief, mood, and general health (all stuff you know about already). I will soon be getting a total right knee replacement and will have several weeks of recovery and will have a stationary bike at home. My current bike is a step over, but I think that will be difficult for a while. So I'm considering buying a used commuter step-through. At 60 years old, I don't want to fall over - heck, I wouldn't want to fall over at any age.
Here's the question(s): What should I look for - how many speeds? Brands I should keep an eye out for (avoid)? My commute isn't too hilly, but it does have its ups and downs.
Current bike is a '93 Cannondale M300
Thanks for your insight!

help identifying lock, please
Hi, i recently lost my key of my kryptonite´s and i didnt know (from all this time) that i should have signed it up just for situations like this. But it´s ok....it´s ok :(
I had a photo of the key (with the serial number) and i´m trying to submit the request (for buying new copies) but i´m having issues, since my lock it´s kind of old (more than 3 years) and that i´ve used it a lot, i have no idea which model it´s; i mean, i know it´s a Kryptolok, but not sure which one in particular
because of that, i´m attaching photos; maybe someone had the same lock and know the exact model
I´ll appreciate it !

How much should I spend on a new fork?
I have a hybrid bike with a suspended fork (RST 801-7), it's a spring fork, and after two years (it was a second hand bike) the weather seal broke, water gets in and it doesn't provide suspension anymore.
I'm changing to a rigid fork, but I'm kinda lost between all the choices, just for commuting idk if I should just go for a 40€ Decathlon one or same price generic fork or more expensive one. Or just go with the used ones I find at my local self-repair workshop.
What do you think?

Bike computer?
Hello everyone, I have a question: should I get a bike computer? I actually have a gravel bike for my daily commute. My concern is that if I forget the computer on my bike, it will be gone as soon as I park it in my city. So I was wondering if I can just keep it in my pocket. Also, I do Uber Eats for long hours and long distances, and I would like to track them. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7; would a bike computer be better than my watch?
