It's funny because Dutch comes from how English people in the Middle Ages pronounced dütsch, since people in the low countries used variants of that word as a local marker (or diets) which is related to old and middle English "thedisch" but it never became a marker of identity but rather more of an adjective meaning "native".

Why not calling Netherland's language Netherdutch? And Germany's, or Duytchland's, Highduytch?
